I have always applied the finish about 1/32" to 1/16" beyond d the edge of the guide wraps. I have never had a problem with the tunnel of the guide foot having air or blank spots in them. But that is just me opinions will differ I am sure.

You would probably be best off by contacting the provincial government in whatever province you plan to move to and ask them.

With all the good finishes on the market, I don't quite understand why you would want to mess around with super glue. Reason?

Are you going to be using a spinning reel or casting reel?

I would suspect that the center height of the blank in the chuck and your support are not equal. Measure the height of the center of the blank at the chuck and then at the support, if not equal you will get a lot of what you call wobble. Make sure the support is also perfectly aligned with the chuck, that too can cause a problem.

There are many good epoxy finishes out there, such as Trondak, Flex Coat, and others. It is up to you to test them to see which works best for your needs. I tested everyone of them and have my favorites. Some are better than others, but it is a very subjective thing. What works well for me may not for you. Test, test, and test again.

I would shape the ring before gluing it to the existing grip. I do it by hand, with a grinding burr chucked in the lathe, and any final fitting by hand with a Dremel tool.

129. Re: Blank types
All of the Hot Shot blanks I have made were for river fishing for steelhead and salmon. My favorite was an 8'' 4" Lamiglas blank with 2 tips one a little more powerful than the lighter tip. Two of my friends and had been drifting the river for several hour and anchored near the bank over a fairly deep hole to have lunch. I left my hot shot in the water about 30 feet behind the boat when a

131. Rods for Grandkids
I posted a picture of 3 spinning rods that I am making for my grandkids in the grips photo section. Cork with Landmark reel seats made for me by Allen Putnam. Great seats with diamond wood inserts and integral threads for the locking hood. Wish they were still made. About the most comfortable seat you could ever have under your hand and the reel won't move from side to side due to the flattene

As far as I know, Fenwick did not do custom builds for a single individual. You would have had to purchase a bunch of them. This sounds like a custom rod build. If no makers name, maybe he made it for himself.

133. Flocked grips
I just posted a picture of a current rod I am working on. I shaped the cork, grips, flocked them and glued them and the reel seat to the blank, It is a Lamiglas GLB 72 1H that Dick Posey sent me years ago. I am using Fuji Gold SIC boat guides on it and plan to do the wraps with light and dark blue with a little metallic trim. Mildrum gold roller tip. Making this one for myself, so I am goi

KISS!! mark the blank where you want the guides to be wrapped. Take the stripper guide and set it on a ruler to see how far beyond the end of the feet that you want the underwrap to start and end. Say 3"s . Take the ruler and like Bill says put a strip of masking tape at either end of the 3"s and do your underwrap. Place the guide in the center of the under wrap and wrap the guide o

David, send me an e-mail and I will point you to where you can see a bunch of different rods where thread was used to match blanks and no CP that way you will be able to see the guide feet showing through the wraps. Randy

David, yes you will see the guide feet showing through the thread if you don't use CP with a light colored thread. Since you have only used black in the past you never would have seen this result.

Bill, on golf clubs the tape is spiraled on the shaft and then a solution such as that made for the purpose is squirted on the taped area and the grip is just slid onto the shaft. The grips don't come off even when soaking wet. Golf grips get a lot tougher workout than fishing rods. Once the golf grips are on, the only way to get them off is to cut them off. Even after cut, they have to be pe

If you feel you need an additional coat of protection, try Perma gloss on a scrap piece that is coated with the tung oil. It is much thinner and won't eventually flake off. Test!!! before you try either.

What do you need to protect EVA from. It is a soft grip material, why put epoxy over it to make it hard?

sounds like it could be a single bristle from the brush. I only use top quality Sable brushes for my finish. They don't loose and of their bristles.

Thanks Bob, I will check them out. Since I pre-formed and flocked the grip, I need to find a butt cap with a specific OD. I am not concerned about the ID as long as it is .5" or larger An OD of 1 1/8' would be perfect.

Thanks Bob, I decided to go with a gold Mildrum roller top. It will be a good match for the gold Fuji boat guides. I wonder why Fuji quit making gold guides though. I am making a nice live bait rod on a GLB 72 1H blank. 30 to 50 # test line. Should work great. Blue flocked cork grips and an Aftco black barreled reel seat with gold hoods and rings. All I need now is a proper butt cap to

Jim Ising, does Fuji not make any gold plated guides any more? I need a top for a boat rod, size 14 to go with a set of guides that Mr Ohmura sent me as a gift years ago. if not in gold I could use one in gunsmoke. same size. The gunsmoke are in the '83 catalog listed as USG. This catalog does not have the listing for the gold. When he sent them to me I don't think they were on the market y

I have tried it and was not impressed with the color retention I am used to getting with Trondak or Flex Coat, or even my own CP.

If doing light thread, I use a white china marking pencil or a very light scratch on the finish of the blank. if I am going to go over a white or other light colored blank, I use a lead pencil or the scratch method.

I still have at least 50,000 yds of Gudebrod and Holland thread it is still the best made in my opinion. I am currently trying some Fish Hawk thread and I like some of the neon colors, but Gudebrod and Holland set the standard for all others. Haven't seen anything yet to exceed their performance.
