The purpose of using a fly blank for a spinning/casting rod is sometimes that fly blanks nowadays are more often than not 4-piece. Travelling by plane may involve paying extra for "sports gear". But then, why waste money on it if you can stuff the rod in your main luggage. Not a problem with fly rods usually, but things are different with spinning/casting tackle. Now, there not too many

Actually the XF9010-4 makes a great salmon/steelhead rod. The action is surprisingly spinning rod-like, nowhere near as actually moderate, as fast fly blanks normally are. It indeed IS a fast action S&S blank. I built one recently and tried it out on Baltic Sea seatrout. The fish did not cooperate (the weather was terrible - blue sky, bright sunshine, temperature 60+, no wind - but my beloved

Or you could use a vacuum cleaner (held by a pair of willing and uncomplaining hands ;-)) put up against the turning lathe and really do it indoors. Plus sprinkling the cork and the sandpaper with some water will help reduce the mess. Mind you, the vacuum cleaner must be turned on!

Also throw in travel blanks from American Tackle Company, not to mention CTS who in general are travel blank oriented.

To cut a long story short: if you can live with a shorter (6'8") blank, then look at Batson Revelation REVS68MXF. P.S. The blank will easily handle casting weights of more than an ounce. Maybe not tons more, but 1 1/4 oz. is easy.

REC Recoil guides are the lightest, however "lite wire" guides available from Batson, ATC or Pacific Bay are also very light. In your hand you would be probably unable to tell the difference. REC guides - again - are the lightest and are also higly flexible. Besides lite wire steel guides are available only as snake guides, while lite single foot - only Recoil. Take your pick :-) Cheer

I really should not have moved from off-the-shelf to custom made. I really should not have ... Then I realised that "made by someone for me specifically" is better than "factory-made", but not quite there. So I had to build a rod myself, for my own personal use, because I know better. So I did, and then came another one, and another ... Your Honour! I really didn't mean to, b

Thank you all for your input. FYI I have decided to take the Orvis route and will get a Helios II tip flex blank - should be cool, however ... @Ryan McIntosh - I will hold on to the RX8

Methinks S871-2-MHX might do the job. A cute blank, light, sensitive tip, gentle on light lines and fish mouths. I would suggest PacBay Minima or other very light guides. Would be a pity to waste its natural action. Cheers, Michal

Thanks for all the info so far (though it is slightly off-track, given my question ;-)) How about durability of the Quickline series blanks?

1 - Bingham SHX - no 4wt 2 - Quickline - maybe, but I would for sure like to hear about some hands-on experience (thanks for trying to help nevertheless) 3 - yes, that's the blank

Hi! I recently bought, wrapped and fished a Rainshadow RX8 9' 4wt fly blank. Paired with a fairly heavy Alps reel seat, lite wire snake guides and a 4.5 oz. reel the rod is a superb casting instrument. I also love its delicate tip and the ability handle very fine leaders. Also power in the butt is certainly not lacking. There is a "but" however. The rod (and naturally the blank itsel

I recently the PacBay Quickline 4wt blank into a Polish/Czech/French/whatever nymphing rod. Admittedly I did not compare it with other blanks/rods, but I really think I have no need to do it. Mind you, the blank makes a great short nymphing rod, but as regards making longer casts I would look elsewhere. Below is a Google translation of a Czech review of a rod built on this blank. The English la

I am not saying no, but I realised that the St.Croix SC IV blanks are US made (correct me if I am wrong) and that seems to be giving them an edge over the others. Decisions, decisions ... bloody @#$%& ;-)

Hi! I am in the market for an 8wt 9' 4-piece fly rod blank in the up to $150 price range (though the less the better). It will be built into a "one and only" 8wt rod, so it needs to be quite versatile: big trout, steelhead, the occasional salmon (moderately sized mind you) and it may see a bit of saltwater use, though not much. I was thinking maybe a TFO BVK blank, but then St.Croi

Are you sure you need a hot shot-type extra fast blank to cast 1/2 oz. weights? There is e.g. the Batson XST1082F steelhead blank. Casts up to 1/2 oz., line up to 10 lb. Similar blank specs are available from St.Croix and North Fork Composites. However all these blanks are fast action. Cheers, Michal

Actually you could also take a look at Mudhole's CRB blanks. Inexpensive, cool colours and nice fast/mod-fast action, which should do just fine for trout.
