Note to self.......Don't put the lights too close to the rod you idiot!....Blank is fine but the paint bubbled up a bit in one spot. Nothing some 1500 grit can't fix. You can grill a steak with these lamps, I ain't a kiddin here boys, anyone need a tan? Purposely pushing things a bit to see what happens with this rod. Contrary to the label, this paint does not work real well on the dark bla

I will post pictures, but only if doing so won't make me die of embarassment. I am a newbie after all. I am experimenting with Pearl-X pigments from Jacquard Products and am very impressed. These suckers can be mixed with ANYTHING, or just brushed or blown on. You might want to take a look. Derek I have to admit something here.......I HATE two part epoxies...That is why I am stickin

Had an Epiphany. I had an old light bar laying around that I used to use for videography. It carrys 4 300wt BEP movie floods. Turn this sucker on, hold it a safe distance from the blank, and you can watch the water vapor dissipate from the paint I am using as it drys. WARNING: Wear Sunglasses........I am not kidding. Using standard Createx water based airbrush paint in Pearl Red with

Bill It may just be me, but these .pdf files really bog down the system. Cause my Dell to slow to a crawl on the components catalog and even dropped my internet connection twice. Again....It may just be me or my computer settings. I am very new to Windows XP. Derek

Most higher end sewing stores will carry the "twist rayon. It is usually found in 35wt and there is a pretty decent color selection if they carry the Maderia line. It just feels a little wierd walking into a sewing store looking for thread for the first few times until they get to know you. Then the can be very helpful. I am not looking at standard rod wrapping threads, I am looking at a commercial source that advertises 15wt metallics with a fair color selection, and a good color palatte for threads in 20, 30, 35, 50, and 60wt including some metallics, neons and firefly threads. Most of the threads are polyester or Rayon but I have been using these threads with some success for a little while now. I have the

Still working on my matrix. Can you believe that I can't get the information I want (the diameter of certain threads in inches) from the manufacturers? Repeated emails and nothing. Sigh! Derek

Hold onto your pocket books guys, just found out that Madeira has some threads in 15wt 20wt 30wt 35wt 50wt 60wt Waiting to hear from the manufacturer still as to their diameter but they have glow in the dark threads in 50wt, metallics in 15wt, 35wt, and 50wt, astros in 20wt. I"M SCREWED!! Derek

Bill......You?.....a Dummy?.....I think not.....Your rods make mine look like used Q-tips in comparison. I could not sell my recent attempts to a blind man because he could read the guide wraps like braille. That is why I am not posting pictures yet, too embarassing. I am very new to this sort of thing, and people like you, Doc, and Putter, whoops almost forgot Billy V. and others have been a

I have contacted Madeira directly in hopes of getting the info but I have not heard from them yet so there are a few holes in the matrix still. Those wanting a copy can e-mail me direct at dsrtegl2004@earthlink.net and I will send it to everyone concerned by email when it is done

I have seen some brief threads (whoa....bad pun there) about the use of Kevlar threads. Does anyone have any hands-on experience with using them for rod building. I know people that use them for fly and lure making. Derek

I was ready to go....Really......The blank was masked and prepped, the paint was properly agitated (genuinely angry really) and then it hit me. I was about to use $6.25/ounce auto body paint on a rod blank that I recovered from a junk yard and planned to give away.....I MUST BE NUTS....Putter's offer of the tree stand psychoanalysis is looking better and better. OK....You have my attention here. As I am in the process of rebuilding a rather unique (at least for me) rod, I may as well consider some unique grips for it so I am considering flocking the existing grips. To repeat from an earlier thread. This is a give-away freebie so I want it too look nice but at minimal cost to me. The rod will be painted blue/copper flair, the guides will be Fuji harda

Erik You have my complete attention right now......I just belt sanded one heck of a lot of guides on my Delta table top belt sander with a 180 grit belt. Am I screwed? Most were stainless steel boat rod guides with some Aetna Foulproof and Hardalaoys thrown in. Derek

Hmmmm.....That stair tread tape...just happen to have some of that laying around but it is about 2" wide. That heat shrink flocked tubing sounds interesting as well. Would love to marbelize the grips but to be quite honest....I just don't have the clusters if you know what I mean. I have received several other interesting suggestions via email. 1) Seal the cork, wrap the cork w/12wt c

Bill The Rod blank is already black so I am putting the blue/copper flair directly onto the blank so that should save a little weight. Using an airbrush for maximum even coverage without too much build-up and the blank is a 9' med/heavy SW spinning rod.. John Was considering flocking the grips, but since this is a SW rod and I fish a lot of bait I was worried about stains and odors on

I wish I could take you up on the offer of a hunting trip but I do most of mine with a camera these days.....Unless you are talking hogs.......We might be in business then but only if crossbows count. I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn from the inside with all of the windows and doors shut with a Bow. Used to compete on a national level with pistol and rifle though. Fishing is my relaxati

To give you an idea, most of the rods I build are either in the family sedan or entry level suv class. I now plan to skip over the european luxury sedans and sports cars and jump right into the custom chopper arena. I am rebuilding a 9' spinning rod, the blank is presently painted black. the foregrip is greyish brown hypalon, the reel seat is anodized black aluminum, and the rear grip is cor

Hmmmmm....Hey Bill......I have a little experience with cramped spaces. In a situation like yours I would recommend some rod racks on the ceiling (I am not kidding here) to store completed rods, painted blanks, and unworked blanks. They are easy to install and actually save tons of space and make an attractive display for your work. The ones I made before were hinged so they folded down and th
