1) Stop touching the pretty finish.....Even if it does look dry!- I do this WAY too often and since I don't use epoxy I can't claim it was the fumes. 2) Don't coat wraps immediately after getting a haircut- You don't want to know! 3) Don't Vaccuum in a room that has a rod drying in it- Even I can learn a new trick. Hanging my head in shame, shaking it in disbelief, and reaching for t

I am looking at building several long rods for personal use and find myself dealing with the issue of reel seals and their proper placement. Are they truely necessary? The rods I am in the process of designing on paper before building are all 9'6" or better in length and I find myself questioning reel seats. They cost money, and I am building on a budget. I am also looking at altenat

Get it from an actual sewing store and you won't have to pay shipping. Get it from an actual online thread company and you will likely get a better price. Derek Assuming you are in the U.S. that is. Sorry, feel a little like Yoda this morning.

What I have seen with the champagne corks is using just the bulb part to make a "finger grooved" grip that was covered with shrinkwrap. Hey, it worked, looked a little weird but was not bad in the hand. Derek

I seem to remember being told that champagne corks are a bit higher grade and can be used but I have never tried it. Maybe use them as filler under a leather, shrinkwrap, or cord grip? Derek

Thay are almost hypnotic in a way.....They look so silly, but then you look at tham again and they begin to make a sick kind of sense. I produced one (very ugly) rod using a glow-in-dark paint that I used briefly to fish at night for sharks and rays but I ended up giving it to a friend's kid that wouldn't stop bugging me about it. The finish just wasn't holding up to my standards. The paint wa

Personally I went out and got myself a used 1"x30" belt sander and will NOT go back to using a Dremel as I am way too fumble fingered. The Dremel has far too many other uses to be ignored however. Derek

On cord wraps I use dilute elmers glue as a CP and to hold things on place. MUCH cheaper than using Flexcoat or similar preps, and it works fine as long as your finish coat is completely waterporrf. I think I know what cord you are using as well. The rainbow stuff that progressively changes from one color to the next right? I have been looking at the same stuff myself and wondering. Was thin

If you have an airbrush you may want to try the Createx Auto Air paints as they are water based, easy cleanup, and come in shifter colors as well. About $25.00 for 4oz and that goes a long way when airbrushed. You do not have to primer this paint if you have a black (esp matte black) blank and that helps save a little weight. Derek

Bil I have been wondering the same thing myself. was thinking about multi-colored cork or balsa grips on some rods. I have the balsa staining figured out but the cork escapes me. Derek

Does anynone have any experience using these threads? They Have the Candleight Series and the Fine Metallics Series. The Candlelight seried is interesting as it is a heavier guage ("C?") thread. Search engine gave no specific hints for these threads specifically that I could find. Plan to use them for decorative wraps only. Derek

Very attractive and good feeling to the hands grips can be made by doing an open patterned cord wrap on a handle section and then using shrink wrap over it. They look pretty neat as well. Derek

No Two Part Finishes for me I HATE THEM.....Putter is tying to ease me into them slow but it is a painful process. I use an entry level Badger 250 Airbrush hooked up to a Coleman 2-Gallon Compressor I got for less than $50 from Pep Boys. Thanks for the recommendation Mark. I will have to give that paint a look!

I have been doing a little experimenting over recent months. Krylon Fusion works well but needs a good clear coat to really make it pop. Createx Airbrush Paints work even better as do the duplicolor paints and the auto spray paints (great metallics there). I have so far had the best results with the Createx airbrush paints (esp the Auto Air Series) as I tend to bee too heavy handed with aeroso

If you need big, heavy, nearly impossible to destroy ones to ship multiple rods you can try the cardboard tubes that carpet is spooled on. Just go dumpster diving at any major carpet outlet and you can often find them in the recycling. I have never had a problem with them except for added shipping fees because they are heavy, but they fit a lot of blanks with packing material.

I got a Coleman Compressor 2-Gal tank from Pep Boys for $50.....It works for airbrushing and maybe flocking but it not near enough for something like sandblasting. Should have spent a little more for a bigger one that would be more flexible for ALL the stuff I need it to do. Derek

A VERY understanding cop actually drove me home in my car in exchange for a dinner on me. Won't mention being on board a boat that suddenly bacame a submarine during a freak squall in SF Bay years back, it wasn't my gear......OOOpppsss

OK...Need a little help here from someone not so mathmatically challenged as I am. The conversion equation for diameter in mm to diameter in inches mm/25.4 Is that right? Thanks Cliff!

I have seen some very nice grips produced by using shrink tubing over a pattern laid out in cord. Looks pretty nice, but I am having problems finding it in rod building diameters. Derek

Gator Glass 11'6" Maybe Mudhole Has some Cascade Composites Blanks that would be doable and affordable in spinning and salmon/steelhead blank categories. If you find anything you like let me know as I am looking to buy some surf lure chuckers for west coast stripers myself and cheaper the better as these will be the ones subjected to "the treatment" i.e. sand, surf, rocks

As I have oftern stated before....I HATE two part preparations. No matter how hard I try I can never get them quite right. Spar is my do-it-all rod finish. It can be airbrushed on, applied with a foam brush, or wiped on with a coffee filter. It can be thinned, tinted, pigmented, glitter can be added, and it is at least relatively hard when cured. Clean up is even easy. SInce I also do a l

I second Ray A......Skuff blank very lightly with say 600 grit and than spray with a matte urethane or polyurethane. Should work. I just went the opposite by taking a matte dark grey blank and adding a clear gloss coat with brilliant gold sparkle. Pretty interesting result. All things are possible. Derek
