Forgot how long it takes Spar Varnish to dry. Hanging head in shame, shaking head in disbelief. Luckily this is just a rebuild. Hmmmm......Is Permagloss really that expensive? When will I learn to be patient and not touch the pretty finish? Derek

Assemble rod, rotate tip section 180 degrees, add bumper guide where apropriate (sp?), and wrap/epoxy it in place. Make a small mark on both sections of rod for proper alignment when re-assembled. Can it be that easy or am I missing something? It has been said countless times that spine of the rod is not all important. Can't be since so few production rods are actually wrapped on the spine

I like a variable speed motor as I do not just dry rods with me set-up but apint my rods on it as well with an airbrush. Imagine how smooth a paint coat you would get if you applied light even coats to a rod blank turning at about 100rmp. I know some people out there that apply finish at 250rpm and beyond. A higher speed also comes in hand when applying spar varnish with foam brushes and paint

Willing to give a novice like me basic wiring instruction on how to set up a variable speed drying motor. I am talking about real step by step basics. Type of motor to look for, what to use for a speed control (a dimmer switch?) and the proper type of cord to use (i.e. safe- grounded?). As well as how to safely combint the components. Give me a Penn or Abu reel and I can make that sucker ta

my favorites call for biscuts cut from pine with a 1 1/2" diameter hole saw. Bore out center hole with step bit to fit ABEC 5 or 7 bearings you can get in bulk cheap off @#$%&. Press the bearings in place to make your rollers and wrap the edge with weatherstripping or a thick, quality felt. Someone I know is flocking their rollers. The rest is pretty academic. I am surprised that nobody mentioned the "chinese finger puzzle like" "Butt Wrap" that is offered by many suppliers. Cut it to size, slide it into place, and secure for and aft with thread wraps. Can't get much easier than that.......Looks are a different equation. Derek

OOOOOOOOOO!........Putter....You're bad. Have to agree though.......and you would not believe how big a pain it is to thread the bloody things. If you fish silty water or water with a high algae or diatom level you are screwed. Derek

I am with you Putter.....Just look at the pics I posted and you will see that guide foot prep is not my area of expertise. I am much better at fishing them than building them right now. But I am learning. I have to agree that guide placement , spacing, and alignment can be a serious pain though. Derek

Erik, I was looking at those things myself, as well as their shrink wrap, and flocked shrink wrap stuff. Let me know if it works for you please. Derek dsrtegl2004atearthlinkdotnet

Spar Varnish can me thinned and sprayed with the Badger. I have the Badger 250 and it gives good results. I am experimenting with Createx airbrush paints as well as their Auto Air paints. Don't like the chemicals found in spray paint that much. Derek

I have to agree guys. Neal is one of those rare (except for the sponsors on this board) individuals that really cares about the craft and his customers. He has patiently answered question after question for me and is always quick to reply to more and offer learned suggestions many people would not even think of. He is a sincere and generous man. I am very tempted to just take the rod into the sewing store where I get my thread and just start looking at colors. It may be worth all of the funny looks I would get (Iget plenty for being in there already) because a couple of the ladies that work there are pretty cute ;-} Derek

Diluted Elmer's Glue will work in a pinch....But your top coat has to be perfect...Any moisture intrusion and you are screwed....Future works fine but it is only a semi color preserver as it darkens threads slightly. Derek

I have a chesnut colored blank (i.e. reddish brown) that I hope to wrap either Friday or Saturday but I am having a @#$%& of a time coming up with a color scheme. I thought about using a yellow/orange 30wt Rayon without color preserver for the tranparent thread effect.....Will be my first attempt.....But I hesitate. Suggestions? Comments? NO PUTTER......No Purple Metallic....LOL

It looks like it is time to try some slicing and dicing on order to put together some patterned EVA grips similar to those posted by Tom and Billy. I need recommendations as to the best (and cheapest) source for EVA in 24" staight and uncut lengths. It would be nice if they had a good color selection as well. There are a lot of vendors on @#$%& willing to make a deal for a volume buy but

After getting replies from a couple of Board Luminaries to the effect of "@#$%& I've seen worse" I decided to post a pic of my firstr cord wrap. Cordwrap before foregrip is yellow mason line using dilute Elmer's Glue as a color preserver and Spar Varnish as a top coat. Foregrip is Hypalon that I spray painted with Createx Red Pearl paint mixed with Jacquard Products Transparent Y

I am experimenting with the Krylon myself and know a few others that have used it as well....Results mixed, mostly due to being too heavy handed with the coats of paint (my problem). It seems to hold up pretty well but I don't know about long term durability and flexability. Derek

Shame on you Ken and Phil....Stockpile of guides laying around collecting dust! You could always throw people like myself and many others here who are building rods on a budget a bone and put them up for sale here. Just a thought....If you sell the old.....and I do mean sell them, not give them away....you could recycle your stock and get the new stuff. ;-} Derek

I am experimenting with rayon thread, not R&A but Madeira and Sulky, and I am only in the early stages. You are right about the color palatte, simply too many options unavailable elsewhere, and the thread has a great sheen to it. I recently did a butt wrap with mercerized cotton thread, singed off the fuzz, and coated it with two light coats of spar varnish. It was a lumpy mess. I used 15

Where I can find line are drawings of basic fishing rod handle shapes. I am looking into starting to do patterned eva grips like Billy V. and having basic line drawing of common handle types would be a help. My drawing skills suck....That is why I am a photographer. Derek I still can't get over how quick someone came up with the 20 square per inch graph paper solution.

I think it is time I listen to you and my other peers and look into ordering some back issues of your magazine. I will primarily be building surf rods. Some spinning, but most will be casting rods, and I would prefer to spiral wrap those. Grips will mostly be eva or other synthetics (I don't like cork on a surf rod) split grips usually, and I like Billy V's multicolored eva grips. If you can
