Has anyone used the rockwell bladerunner?
I'm wondering if this could substitute for a band saw for use on cork and eva. At roughly $179, this may be a good buy in substitution of a band saw if it works.

This is what I have on all my invoices below. I have never had any problems or complaints. I typically try to offer 3 blanks for builds, a cheap, middle of the rod blank, and high end blank. I also explain which blanks come with warranties from the manufacturers. I haven't had any returns yet, but if a micro guide pops out or something, I have no problem fixing one or two guides for no charge.

243. Liquid v. Gel Epoxy
When would you use one over the other? For epoxy work, such as the reel seat and grip, I use the gel, propaste and rod bond. Having never used the liquid form of epoxy, when would you use it? Does one bond better than the other? Pros and Cons of each?

I do not get many requests for fly rod repairs or builds, so I need some direction on a repair. I've got a former professional fisherman wanting to either repair some guides on a G Loomis FR1088 that was damaged in Katrina or possibly strip it down and put ceramic guides on it. He's also looking into purchasing a custom fly rod on a sage blank, but that is not definite yet, so no questions on

You have to put some sort of base down, whether it's clear finish or tinted finish is up to you. I think mudhole has some youtube videos showing the process.
When I started building, I got some good advice from Kenneth Price; wait for the finish to set up a bit. This will help keep the colors from running. If you want them to blend some, hit them with a heat gun or hair dryer. Just watch

I have a cheap harbor freight lathe right now. It does a decent job, but not the best. I bought it for $50, so I'm not complaining. I find myself wanting either a power wrapper or a new jet lathe with a 20" bed.
For my price range, it's looking like a batson or pac bay wrapper, if I get one, i would upgrade the chuck on both. For those with the power wrapper, do you have any trouble

I've tried a couple methods, and I like Tom's advice the best, if you do not have many fuzzies, you can use a razor and clean it up pretty fast. Just be sure to clean the area good before applying the second coat.
I've been building a little over a year and found this article very helpful, it shows you how much work you can actually do on the wraps and not mess them up. The main th

The guy I'm building for has a couple rigs and rigged with swimbaits, it weighs in at a little over 5oz on the scales. What are other options for blanks other than the ones previously mentioned?
Thank you,

253. A-Rig Rod Options
I don't even get to build many rods because of a number of reasons, job, baby, etc, and I have people approaching me to build A-Rig rods. This craze has definately taken hold and those that have the bait are now wanting rods to throw it on. I'm sure those with a higher volume business are seeing this. For those builders, in recent months, has this been one of the more requested builds? I thin

Thanks for the recommendations. I've heard from numerous people that the RCLB is the way to go, but they do not off the 10' blank. This guy is wanting it ot fish pay lakes in the area.
Mr. Hunt, who is the builder in the Louisville area and what kind of work are you doing on the rod? You can message/email me if you don't want to post on the board. reedrod

I'm looking for roughly a 10' + catfish blank capable of throwing 2-6oz. from the bank. The customer is not sure whether to go with fiberglass or graphite, so I'd like to look at both options. How would surf blanks hold up for catfish; these seem to be some of the few 10' blanks capable of throwing such weight? Those that build catfish rods, what would you all recommend? I'm looking at putti

What about the MHX HM-SJ843 built as a casting?
Also, Mr. Vivian, I do not see the HM-MB842 listed, is this a new blank that y'all will be introducing soon?
Thanks,

I've got a customer wanting a blank comparable to the Gloomis MBR 782c /6'6" Medium, Fast Action, 8-14lb, 1/4-5/8oz.. The customer wants this to be a 7' rod.
He is wanting a St.Croix or other comparable blank. I told him I would price 2 high end blanks, and some not so high end blanks.
Since the blank's labeling means very little as compared to the actual CCS data, I need help.

Mr. Gardner -
What type of guide train seems to work best on setups like these?
Are you spiral wrapping the rod? With the opportunity to boat more than one fish on a cast, I couldn't think of a better reason to spiral wrap in order to prevent the rod twist/torque.
Thanks,

In regard to a prior post/question of mine, I just got a chance to take a 1 3/8" hole saw to eva. I used a miter saw to cut 2 blocks that are 1" thick. I then took the hole saw with a 1/4" pilot bit and put it in the table top drill press. I had the press on the highest speed. NO TEARING. It came out 1 3/16". It should work in the mudhole jigs. I have loaned out my jigs

Thanks Mr. Hunt for the reply. I've got a guy wanting a bobber rod for his soon to be wife, and I wasn't for sure whether to go with the 840 or 841. It sounds like the 840 will be the best fit.

I use the guide foot adhesive. Best advice I've read about using it was from a thread here. Heat the foot of the guide and slide it across the adhesive. If you heat your adhesive, you get the adhesive on thicker and can be too much, which I don't like doing.

264. Re: Hole Saw on EVA
Sweet, thanks Billy for getting that out. Looking forward to getting my second sanding kit too.
Also, I don't have a aparatus to bore long eva. I bought a harbor freight lathe from cxxxxlist for $50 new with roughly 36" bed. I didn't want to dump $100 for a 4 jaw chuck on this lathe to hold pieces, so I had a machinist take a piece of solid stock about 3-4" long, and tap both ends

265. Re: Hole Saw on EVA
Thanks for the replies. I've never worked with EVA other than the pre-made grips. I hadn't thought about the possibility of it tearing out.
Phil - my plan is to cut 1 1/2 length, then use a band saw to knock it down to 3 pieces of roughly 1/2" . I forgot to mention that in the earlier posts.
I've got some pieces ordered from Billy, so when I get them, I'll probably get a 1 3/8&quo

266. Hole Saw on EVA
For those of you who have tried it, how does a hole saw work on EVA blocks? I've ordered some blocks yesterday. I've got a guy wanting eva checkers in a cork handle. My plan is to get the blocks, cut about 1 1/2" off of it, and use a hole saw on that 1 1/2" piece to give me the 1 1/4" diameter so it works in the mudhole checker jigs. So this would end up giving me a working piec

Thanks for all the replies. I'm looking to use foam handles in a split grip for finesse rods in the future, such as drop shot and finesse spinning rods. As long as there isn't a big disparity between weights, I'd prefer to use carbon, especially since they are more rigid, which kicks the sensitivity up. Plus they look pretty sweet. On rods where sensitivity is vital, I'd like to use the best

How does the carbon skinned foam grips compare to cork and/or eva in regards to weight and sensitivity? Assuming all things equal, split grip setup, do you save much weight by using the foam and carbon? I do not have the supplies or know how yet to make the carbon skinned grip, but plan on attempting one this spring. Any insight into the weight or sensitivity is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jer

Thanks for all the input. We are still tweaking it and having never done a decal on a rod, the suggestions have helped a lot. @ Chuck - my buddy is an architect, so he has access to a lot of software I don't have access to. Plus I have no drawing skills. I'm wanting something that will also look good as a window sticker once I get some made as well as a rod decal.
Thanks for the help.

A buddy of mine is designing a logo for me. I have never dealt with decals/logos, so I do not know what would look good on a blank.
This is the logo. Any suggestions for improvements are welcomed. You can respond here or shoot me an email at ReedRods@gmail.com.
