calvin the answer is any good rodbuilder can make a better rod than any 'store bought rod' because he custom builds it the way you want it. some examples are the handle can be made to specifically fit your hand, the guides can be static tested to get maximum distance and fish fighting power, and you can get the latest and greatest like micro guides which were available way before they were used o

for me first you need a two hundred some dollar blank, north fork composite hm's or phenix k2's work and then get some fuji torzite titainium guides which adds another hundred and your favorite reel seat like a fuji ecsm cut down to save weight and 'voila' the ultimate bass rod. expensive but better and cheaper than an nrx if you do it yourself. or will probably cost the same if you have a rodbui

i have built on 2 different k2 blanks and never had a problem wrapping them although i remember wondering about that too when i first got them. i think i got some of the first runs back when they were called T46's and had never felt a blank like that before but after feeling how light they were i didn't care. i hear that the newer ones are being sanded because mine were not and were rougher than

i guess i could strap my rod tube to the roof of the little car but it would cut down on my gas mileage, which i redid and might only be $77. i did go to the show a couple years ago but went broke buying 200 dollar nf hm blanks. i was literally like a kid in a candy store and one day was not enough.

74. whats cheaper?
after hassling everyone on this site all winter about the best ds blank and still agonizing over it , i was wondering whats cheaper. i could buy one of each of the blanks on my list or just drive down to carolina next weekend. if i borrow the wifes little scion i figure it will cost about 90 bucks in gas. are the blanks on sale at the show to make it worth my while?

jim did you get the specs on the 700m before you built it. i am interested in weight and the butt and tip sizes as they seem to be different than the other umbx blanks listed.

my only experience with phenix is the t-46 now called the k2 which is a great light weight carbon fiber shaft. in my endless quest for my new dropshot rod i was going to try the ultra umbx-s700m-b but the new m1 mx-s72m-b sounds like it would make an interesting spinning rod as its rated 1/8 to 3/4 oz. any input would be appreciated

i read a post on another site about this and it sounded just like me. i have rod blanks that i have rebuilt 5 times. there are many reasons for this like no 1 when "powerhand baitcasting" came out i redid all my rods. 2 when new concept titanium sic guides came out, 3 when micro guides came out and 4 when i found i could cut down my reelseats to save weight. 5 when fuji came out with ra

just wondering if there is a better way to remove the clearcoat from a rod blank besides just sanding it by hand, which can get tricky sometimes.

pekka- i would worry more about getting the right I.D. get one a little smaller than the spot on your blank where it will be installed then ream it to fit. although i haven't used one yet the minima should come with everything you need, just don't forget to cut some threads off of the locknut barrel as it will feel better in your hand. remember sandpaper is your friend for your outside diameters
