I,m pretty much in Terry,s camp about how some of us try to make this craft into rocket science..i always felt that Spine was an attempt to do this very thing..i just thought it was silly and didn,t take too much thought to see it is bogus..maybe if i built to sell i would think different and try to hype things up too..jmo..

i don,t know anybody who pays much attention to advertisers but they do listen to fellow fishermen and what they think of certain rods, reels, and lures, etc.

i think the most important quality of braided line is it,s finer diameter which means less drag or less line belly when moving through the water..it,s in a much more direct contact with the rod..

every time i see a discussion about sensetivity it,s always looked at as if it were a rod problem never a line problem but i guess that,s because it,s a rod-centric site..lol..the use of braided line has cured all my sensetivity issues even for glass rods...

Michael, last night i took off the #5 running guides and put #4s on..i did some test casting today and can,t say i see any difference in distance or ease of cast..it,s a much lighter guide train without a stripper guide and reducers, that,s for sure but it,s only for braided lines..i,m still gettin 40 to 50' with the B&A cast which i,m satisfied with..i,m still using a quarter ounce trap fo

Phil, don,t disparage that cocktail umbrella bug..i used to make them Henshall style..i used a 71/2' pitching rod with 720grain shooting head to get it out there at night..it weighed 160grains when wet but the line still carried it up to 50'..lot,s of excitement when a 7# bass got hung on that big bug..lol.

Robert, what a great idea! i make short(about 4') rods for local farm ponds..the rods i use are hollow glass but the solid glass rods sound very interesting..Thanks for posting this..do you have a good source for ice rods up to four feet, maybe solid carbon also..Thanks..

just for extra credit/giggles i ran the line from the spool to the first running guide and tried casting and B&A shooting, no butt or reducing guides..i did not see any difference..it,s like we don,t need these guides at all..sure would be a lot less weight..it looks like an upside down casting rod..lol..the first guide is 14" from the spool lip...it looks like Phil is right..the guide t

sorry Lynn, that,s my ignorance not yours..it,s a bow and arrow cast, where you pull the lure back and load the rod, release the lure and it shoots out over the water..i bank fish farm ponds and sometimes this is the only way to cast because of trees etc..i,ve been trying to perfect a rod for this purpose ..it has to be short because of tight quarters, best so far is about a fourfeet long..any lo

like Roger, i,m using a #12 stripper then running with 5s using 10# power pro line.. no problems at all..i went to a ML glass rod on last build and getting B&A shots 50 to 60' with this set up of no reduction guides, just a stripper..puting one together with just a #10 stripper now maybe go down to an 8, just for giggles..the soft braided line does not care..it just works..

Michael, i,m a hobbiest and don,t build many rods in a year espacially top line blanks..is there much difference in rod variatio CCS wise or is it just low modulus low cost blanks(my kinda blank, lol.) that are the worst..i see some wild numbers sometimes but the rod still builds and fishes pretty good to me...

the easiest way to color cork grips for me is to flock size 40/80 granulated cork onto urethane core grip that has been coated with an epoxy glue that has been pigmented with a color of your choice..then sand just enough of the cork for the pigmented epoxy to show through..this is very perminent because your not dying the cork itself..the color is not very bright because it is toned down by the c

this is why CCS will not be promoted by most big rod and blank makers, too much variation and CCS shows it..they can,t handle too many returns.

Tom, 10% is a real good day for me..yesterday i glued a DPSM handle on a rod that already had the spin guides in place but "forgot" line the handle with the guides..i remembered an hour later..luckly the guides were off about a quarter turn and i was still able to turn the seat back..in this hobby there is so much of the human element that 10% variation is perfection..lol..Norman, like

Maybe less work because there is no need to glue up the burl rings to make the grip and then bore it out for the urethane insert..simpler to flock the granulated cork to the urethane core and sand..i,m now thinking there may be a way to eliminate the sanding step which would make contoured grips easier..call it shake and make..lol.

Since burl cork is made of compressed granulated cork, i,m suggesting that instead of boring out the burl grip and and gluing it to a urethane core, take a urethane core and shape it then epoxy the granulated cork to it, then sand the cork down to the desired texture..it would be even lighter..

i just found it and a urethane mud hole 63/4"stick covered end to end with sanded granulated cork weighs 13.94 grams or about 1/2 ounce..and it,s tough as nails or as the epoxy holding everything together
