Rick.........you have been given some great information and advice. You did not mention if the reel seat was a casting or a spinning and that makes a difference and well. Your rod blank is tapered and a spinning reel seat is not. So one end is going to be closer to the bank than the other end and will require an arbor of of your choice. Some casting seats are made the same way and will requi

Interesting question and I look forward to hearing the responses too. I have two rooms that I use for rod building. Actually the room is 11x17 and under it is the same size in the basement 11x17. In my main room is where I have a 12ft table that hosts the rod lathe and under it is storage for all the components. Across from that is another table dedicated to drying (curing) rods once in epoxy

The rod sleeve is a very nice touch but adds cost. What I use is clear plastic sleeve like you find on the blanks when you get them only larger to accommodate both casting and spinning rods. I seal the bottom and fold over the top and staple one of my business cards to it. Most everyone is pleased and can't wait to open it. Tom

All you need to hold the guides in place is dental ligatures. I have them in 1/16 1/8 and 3/16 in for use all the way down the rod. They are cheap and available on Amazon

Follow Norm's suggestion to the letter. As an old cabinet maker we used the same method for laminating countertops. And since the belt is porous after the first coat dries about 15 minutes and is tacky to the touch but not wet....apply a second coat of contact cement to both the belt and the reamer. Wait again until it is tacky and apply the belt to the reamer. It will never come loose again.

I have found that 19 inches is my target for spin and bait cast rods. It depends somewhat on the length too.

Recently I have been given a honey colored fiberglass surf rod to clean up and replace the guides . The rod blank is really dirty from forty years of use. My question is if anyone has cleaned up one of these kind of blanks what did you use on it? Under the cork it has a nice shiny finish and I hope to achieve the same results on the rest of the rod. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

X2 on Roger's 1'x30" sander and I use min 220 grit. It works perfectly and you are only having to handle the guide not the guide and grinder since it is stationary. No heat build up and does a quick and smooth job on the guide foot.

Take a measurement on your rod where you want the reel to stop. That is the measurement of the reel seat. On exposed seats it is the back of the reel seat

Joseph... No trick to it.. labels that come with most rod blanks are very thin and present no issues. On my Pearl Lable 270 they are slightly thicker and I'll put some CP on the edges. I work it fairly fast since it dries quickly. Tom

Just a suggestion. Put it on in thin coats, do not turn the rod like you would a guide wrap.

You can use the epoxy that your wrapping your guides but there is a great product out there called Perma Gloss. It is crystal clear and goes on very smooth. If you re using a light colored rod , like white. it will never turn yellow like epoxy will, and your decal will look terrific forever.

One of the biggest problems I see on the real small micro guides is that the foot is too short. I have had more people ask me to replace their micros than those who want them. The smallest I generally use is a 4.5 and occasionally a 4. There are claims that the smaller guides weigh less, which is true. but when you need to use five more guides to keep the line up off the rod that pretty wel

I was going to order a high end NFC blank but after my last unbelievable experience and now hearing this I don't think its worth the headache. Thinking of ordering a St Croix SC5 from Rodgeeks, can't get much better than that legendary blank from a company that stands behind their products. Tom
