Tom is exactly right on the UV finish. I have a six month old quart of Flex Coat Ultra V and it is already so yellow that I won't use it on anything other than black thread on a black rod.

Jeremy I have done several as well and what you said it true. When you pull the threads off there remains a gray ring around the rod. It is in the epoxy and my first thoughts were that the thread die bled onto the epoxy resin. Whatever, it is the biggest pain in the _*&%$ to get off. I have one here that the tackle shop I do repairs for wants all the guides replaced with Fuji "K&q

Thanks Tom........I have done that in the past with good success , just thought it might be easier to get it straight from someone that has already done it. If no help comes I will definitely call. Tom

Repairing a broken micro guide on a Boyd Duckett rod and having difficulty matching up the gray thread. I have six shades here and none seem to cut it. Does anyone know what brand and color of gray they are using or if someone has repaired one and can tell me what you used it would be greatly appreciated. Tom

When removing the cork I Never use a knife or grinding tool or sandpaper. Take a regular pair of pliers and grab/pinch the cork then pull or twist it. The cork will fall off the blank with no possible damage to that Sage blank !!!

Jack Ditto to what Norm said again. I was happy to hear that it worked out for you. My experience is that Aftcote usually takes about 12 hours to cure so you should be good to go, not over kill for this product. I hope you liked how easy it was to apply as well and you should have gotten a nice smooth coat too. Tom

A while back Roger Wilson said it best. WASH your hands before your start. Touch your face..... wash your hands again, Scratch your hair...wash your hands again. NEVER eat or drink while working on your rod. If you stop for a while when you come back wash your hands again. Dry them off with a clean dry paper towel. It can be that important but so easy to rectify.

Thanks for the reply, I may just try adapting it. I had my LED light on the bench and inadvertently set my torch under it and melted the lens. Need a replacement Tom

Tom thanks for your comments. Yesterday I measured the broken rod OD, it is 12.94mm so I have ordered a 13mm ID carbon fiber tube and will use thread to arbor it on. Once finished I'll post photos of the repair.

Didn't want to hi jack Toms thread on Carbon fiber since this is a bit different. I am doing a rod repair of a St Croix Legend Tx that the rod was crushed between the split grips. He also wants to add to the length. So my question?? Has anyone used carbon fiber tubes to make extensions on rods? I looked at Sollers and a few other sites on line and there are claims that the carbon fiber tub

I agree with Norm Miller. the easiest way is to just use an epoxy with a longer pot life. I also use Aftcote on long rods requiring more time to apply the epoxy. It pot life is about twice as long as the other epoxy I use which is Flex coat hi build

Bill You apply a liberal about of mineral spirits over the tape and the grip will slide right on. Wait about a half an hour for the spirits to dry and your ready to fish. Tom

Michael the only rod I have used a full grip on was one for me. It did in time wrinkle as well. It's had almost two seasons of use. Truthfully I have built almost fifty rods with the Winn grips. I really like them. This year almost 100% have Winn grips. I have made all kinds of modifications to them as well. Like cutting them to size and re gluing eva on the exposed ends. I have split one dow

I too called ABU Garcia and was told there are no parts for their rods available in the US. As was said above tthe good news for rod builders is that the guides on them break easily and often. On the Veritas a Fuji CLNAG on the double foot or CLAG in the fly guides is a very close match and a far better product. I have done a few of total replacement guides but when you figure that the rod ca

I was wondering what others think about how to install the Winn grips. I see on YouTube that they are using two sided tape. I for one haven't done that on the many rods I have built using Winn grips. My choice has been Pro Paste epoxy. The question is however, which method is better and stronger for the long term? In all the videos no one mentions what type of two sided tape they use,

Congratulations Don. I went to the Lews site and it was showing the rod in a casting version. Are you offering the Airwave guides in casting versions? Tom
