Didn't want to hi jack Toms thread on Carbon fiber since this is a bit different. I am doing a rod repair of a St Croix Legend Tx that the rod was crushed between the split grips. He also wants to add to the length. So my question??
Has anyone used carbon fiber tubes to make extensions on rods? I looked at Sollers and a few other sites on line and there are claims that the carbon fiber tubes are stronger than aluminum which is what Tom recommends in his article in Rodmaker on Extensions. The only issue I see, and it may not be an issue at all, is that there is virtually no bending in the carbon fiber tube To me at the end of a rod blank that has almost no flex at that point it may be a good fit?? Also changing over the grips to Winn allows me to slide it all the way up to the reel seat. Which is about three inches above where I had to cut the blank. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated Tom Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 08/15/2016 08:23PM by Tom Wewerka. Re: Another on Carbon fiber

You can make the tube, but understand that without the plattens and resulting pressure between then your tube won't have the strength to weight ratio that you find in most rod blanks. Of course, you can find a scrap rod blank to provide the section you need. Yes, you can do this and with a little thought it'll be a very good repair.

Tom thanks for your comments.
Yesterday I measured the broken rod OD, it is 12.94mm so I have ordered a 13mm ID carbon fiber tube and will use thread to arbor it on. Once finished I'll post photos of the repair. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
