For the record, we were very happy to see Fuji's KR CONCEPT because they have been BEHIND in addressing the trend toward shorter reduction trains, high frame small ring guides etc.. However, this has always been Fuji's MO. They are methodical and thorough in their approach and when they do finally speak it is from a position that we have become convinced over the years is critically analyzed and

Fuji's new KR CONCEPT is pointed at efficient, long casting micro layouts and the products being introduced are micro guides. We are working to "decipher" the information Fuji has provided mainly to be able to give rod builders an easier method to follow than the broken english explanation we have received from Fuji on how these rods are built. The basics are there but we would like to

I have measured this reel before. Try a 16 at 23 and 8 at 29 and your first runner at 34. I could be wrong, but this is a fairly small reel and I think the choke point is closer than you're placing it. More in the neighborhood of 35 inches. If you start this close and move toward Tom's suggestions you'll probably hit it somewhere along the way. Tom: The idea of positioning the stripper and th

Good plan. I have measured the same reel and have a slightly lower (2.5mm) backside of 84.3. My choke point with your data shows it at 32.4 inches from the spool tip. I'm showing a 16mm (Y) stripper at 18 inches from the spool axle tip. 27X puts a 20mm at 23 inches. Different, yes, but not that different. I agree with Tom, I'd try both.

Its the easiest I've found. By the way, you use a tiny amount of glue that breaks free very easily for final adjustments, and I've never seen a problem with CP or epoxy over that little smidge of glue. I work with the large size Flex Coat wrapper, not sure of the exact name, but all of the wrappers with a base (rather than a stand up, vertical back with rollers) have a raised "spine" i

You just use a small pointy piece and jam it gently in the ring hole. Sounds funny but holds good ;•) When you pull it off quickly it comes off clean as a whistle. I'll try to post some pics now that I've opened my mouth. Lance is talking about a little tiny nylon cable tie as you describe. He has them for sale and they are worth the money.

I agree Kyle. It amazes me how LITTLE stress the guides seem to be under when you cast. Tape seems to work fine though it is always a tedious thing dealing with micros. I stumbled on a neat trick early on that has helped me a lot for handling micros. I use tape for testing and hot glue for final alignment before wrapping and it's a tricky thing to get a flame on the foot of a micro without burnin

I seem to be capable of getting sidetracked on what's REALLY important in terms of research and thought it might be interesting to re-focus and see what the rest of the world thinks. So, if you had to keep your business going with only five blanks in stock, what would they be. I'm more interested in length, action, power, even species than I am brand names and numbers. In fact, I'd like to leave

Choose "photo quality" if it shows up in any printer menus. But Tom is right. If the resolution (dots per inch, DPI) is not 200 or above you are likely to see at least a fuzzy edge on type. The whole web world works on 72 DPI screen resolution and everybody thinks that's all that's ever needed...it's an invitation to jaggies. If the file size of a 3-inch X .5 inch decal is not AT LEAST

Thanks Bill, I knew I could count on you for a no-nonsense answer ;•) I think what your saying is that oxygen is a key ingredient in forming the Chrome OX-ide layer that protects the surface; covering it with thread and epoxy limits oxygen and actually triggers the whole corrosion domino effect? Sounds like something we have no way around. Does the embedded iron, lacking oxygen under the epoxy,

I'm with Mick. By the time you figure the added cost vs a lifetime of "carefree" maintenance, Titanium is the way to go. The way I see it if Titanium is $50 more it's only 50-cents a trip for the first 100 uses and I got the "All Done" beer and a shower a few minutes sooner...100 times! I would also be wary of blanket statements about 316 vs 304 Stainless. 316 has more Molybde

I spend a lot of time trying to help out with Fuji guide questions but now I have a question that I need your help with. My 23 yer old son recently moved to Miami and has zeroed in on a very "equipment specific" fishing method that I know nothing about. I want to build him a rod for Christmas, but don't know where to begin. He is targeting "spillway snook" and it's a man agai

I would tape according to the results. It doesn't look too strange to me. I would try it with a KL 16 at 29 inches and follow it with a KT10 at 37 then a KT4.5 at the choke point. I know a two guide reduction train sounds ridiculous, but it's not far off of Fuji's new KR CONCEPT. I would do this mostly for FUN and education. THEN, depending on how it casted, I might move the 16 and 10 in 2-inches

Depending on where things fall, you might try choosing a different set of sizes, say a 20, 12, 8 instead of a 25, 16, 10. Those are odd results from the measurements. Small reels for lighter (usually shorter) rods would normally have more upsweep, this one seems to have less. Most of the time 27X will place guides further out the rod. In this case 27X is closer. I have measurements here for a Pfl

Thanks for the kind words Drew. I laid out probably 30 to 40 rods while developing GPS and gained great confidence, but that didn't keep me from puckering up a little bit when we introduced it. I am sure it will take some time for many builders to develop confidence in something so new, but we are already working on expanding and improving the app. Two brand new K-Series guides will be arriving i

We had meetings this week with our Japanese trading partner and ask them to pose the question to Fuji. They said as far as they know the 3.5's are made and polished by the same company (KYOCERA) but they will check further.

Greg: if the measurements provided by Jim are spot on and the performance is good, please let me know so I can add them to the "library" and we won't have to go through this again. I just plugged in these numbers and they look pretty good. Starts with a KL25 at 21 inches. then a KL20, and KL12. They fall 9 inches apart, which will look nice.

As we measure more and more reels we can "generalize" about the way things take shape. Generally, if you measure a reel in the same series, i.e. a 2000, 2500, 4000 etc. you will have a fairly good set up to tweak. If you normally allow yourself, say, two inches of leeway, you might add another inch to a "series" measurement to account for variations in the data. You have hit o

We refer to GPS as a "starting point" on our website, but exactly what that means is open to interpretation. The idea is to work "with" the information to reach a final layout. How? We developed a GPS layout for a rod a few days ago and took notes as we progressed. The resulting "scenario" is now posted as a blog entry at Click "Blog" at the bottom of the

I think Andrew makes some interesting points. Are we splitting hairs here? Perhaps. But at the pinnacle of almost every endeavor is there not a point where discussions like this one take place. Envelopes get pushed. Dust is stirred up... and settles. Things improve sometimes. Sometimes they don't. Pick the characteristics that are important to your style of fishing and choose the ring you want ac

As far as the quality of various SiC rings from different manufacturers, I can share this. A lot of companies can produce SiC parts. In Fuji's case, they work with engineers and chemists at KYOCERA®, one of the world leaders in producing Silicon Carbide parts. KYOCREA® facilities are state-of-the-art, and the quality of their parts is considered among the best in the world. They are a $7+ billi
