I can tell you the New Iberia Black Gumbo recipe Bill has is lip-smackin' good! The recipe is 4 pages long (there's a little bit of a story as you might expect from Bill) but when you finally slice that hard boiled egg and spoon the dark roux gumbo over some sticky rice....uh oh, shouldn't have thought about it...looks like it time to make gumbo again!!!

Thanks, Bill. You took the words right out of my mouth! I know they are working flawlessly on the A Rig rods you offer and that's a true test.

The library article is Tom's 27X concept applied to Fuji's New Guide Concept. A "blend" if you will. That's why things don't always seem to "fit". Our information is based on spool axle angle to compute a choke point and does not consider spool diameter. KR is a further refinement of NGC that shortens the choke point and reduces stripper ring size even further. Tom made the

For those of you interested in high speed photography and a little more info on the thinking and research behind Fuji's new KR CONCEPT, we have just posted a video on You Tube detailing the development of this fascinating new build philosophy. You can search "KR Concept from Anglers Resource" or click We were saddled with the video provided and given only a very rough english translat

The torch she uses is BIG but she knows how to use it. It would instantly smoke any finish in one second if left stationary. She's moving....fast at all times. She gets plenty of footballs, those are the "hang down" bulges she gently grabs with the brush and "moves" wherever they need to go to get things level again. Fun to watch.

I'm working on it, Billy. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I have already tried the technique and the first rod I coated was a nice improvement. Thinking back, she did not heat to the point of dripping, but she applied to the point of a few drops when brushing it on. The torch allows you to think of the epoxy as something with an adjustable viscosity..which it is. Understandi

I'm with Billy on the "A LOT more per coat" suggestion. I was having similar problems and asked Kathy Kruse at the Rod Room in Orange Beach for a private lesson. Beautiful finish on every rod in her shop! She PILES it on right out of the chute, mixes a huge amount in a small, tin-foil lasagna dish and just goes after it. Has to hold the pan under the rod there's so much dripping off as

I've heard many people talk about how difficult it is for those of us involved in the rod building craft to gain any sort of editorial attention from the "BIG" magazines because of the huge dollars rod factories spend on advertising. Generally, I have found that to be true, but today I have to eat those words thanks to our pro staffer Bernie Schultz. Bernie is currently on Toledo Bend f

Looks like a solid method to me. GPS is nothing more than a way to automate what Tom, Carol and many others have done for many years to determine guide position for New Guide Concept builds.

Carol, the llnk to your choke point tutorial is not working for me and I would like to see it. As we mention over and over in all the literature, GPS can only crunch numbers taken by the builder. Bad in bad out. Not saying yours are bad just reinforcing the idea that, as we've mentioned, we suggest working with an average after measuring the reel a few times to account for slight variations in se

FYI Carol, there is a factor of 3mm incorporated into GPS as a reel seat cushion. We found that to be an average height most reel seats hold the reel foot off the blank. I do not understand your comment about a 1mm thick paper changing the choke point 20 cm. If I add 1mm to the A and B values in GPS (which would be the same as adding a 1mm piece of paper), I change the choke point 1 inch not 20 c

Spool diameter and stripper size will no doubt continue to be one of the remaining "BIG" debates. Tom has an airtight case for his views and I will always respect that. In fact I probably can't argue effectively against it. Still, I am here to convey the findings of Fuji and the bottom line is that their most recent research has taken them AWAY from the relationship between spool size a

If you look at any K-Series guide from the side, you will notice a lot of things going on that most of us overlook. The frame legs, for example, angle forward as you might expect, but the RING ANGLE is completely different. There are two slope angles working together to achieve the desired result. Fuji quickly learned that if the ring angle matched the frame angle the tangles still managed to &qu

The chloride found in Sharpies is corrosive to stainless steel. If you will search "chloride free stainless steel markers" on Google you can not only confirm what Fuji is saying, you can locate numerous sources for these markers.

I have been searching for on-line info for the URRS (casting and spinning version of the CCS) for DAYS and short of the single back issue of Rodmaker where the article originally appeared I can find very little. We need a step-by-step on the ERN, TP, and PR of a given spinning or casting blank (or rod). Anyone know if this exists???

The K-Series angle is the result of a two year study to determine the cause of tangles/wind knots and ultimately design a guide frame that successfully shed the line configurations that led to tangles before they had a chance to form on and around the guide frame. There are those who believe the downward facing angle of the ring contributes to the effectiveness of the new KR Rapid Choke positioni

Anglers Resource has just added KR CONCEPT readouts for KL-H guides to GPS along with a variety of reels from our (limited) personal measurements. Consider this a "beta" testing version, we reserve the right to fine tune as we proceed. Testing seemed to work fine but there will be reels with steep angles that will give what many will consider "whacky" results in GPS. All we ca

You have a drop of 9 mm over a 111 mm distance so your reel measurement sounds good. We have just added the KR CONCEPT to GPS and it should be considered a "beta" phase. We tested a number reels and measurements and it seemed to work fine. We did notice, however, that reels with very steep angles gave us radical positions that all of us (even AR) would want to argue with due to how shor

Jeremy, it sounds like regardless of the NGC set-up method you used (table edge, chart, GPS?) your reel points WAY down the rod to a far out choke. I agree with Tom in suggesting you move the choke point in. The latest info from Fuji suggests the same thing. With a reel that has a far out choke point the new KR info seems to work really good. To use it, establish a stripper and choke point locati

John is right. The idea of the KR is a little like "replacing" a 30 stripper (or larger) with a small ring OF PROPER HEIGHT to begin the line choking process much sooner and bring smooth flowing line down on the blank faster. A standard Y-frame (or even a K) in a small ring size will be much lower than a KL-H and will need to be positioned further out...negating the advantage of "r

LN is slightly lighter than MN. If you go Titanium, you can have the extra strength of the MN with no noticeable weight gain.

More, smaller running guides will increase sensitivity simply because they add "contact points" on the blank for transmission of vibration. Smaller guides sit lower to the blank so these signals with, say, a size 4 runner only have to go 4-5 mm to reach the blank. I would further agree that your two guide reduction train idea is valid due to the new information we have on the KR Concep

Agreed. 2500 series, maybe 4000 but seldom 6000. If you have a good reason for choosing that size I have a 6500 Saltist here with a choke point of 44.25 inches and a "B" height of 102.3mm, much closer than a 27X in this case but it could be this particular reel. Proceed with caution.

Sharpies may contribute to FASTER corrosion on ground guide feet. Marker ink contains Chloride which is very corrosive to stainless steel. Stick with paint.

Since we now have rod building capabilities for experimental purposes, it seems to make sense that we gain experience with the blanks you guys build on MOST. 16 stripper on a 9ft rod...excellent. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I suggest you make your final reel decision before laying out the rod. it could impact guide position depending on how different the reels are. A couple of years from now you will realize what a good decision Titanium was.
