Ok, rainshadow immp76mh-tc with carbon fiber split grips for spinning reel, probably a stradic 3000/4000. Fuji KR guides, what determines spacing? Size of guides? Did the micro guide become a useful trend or does d it fade away? Thanks, John

I am having trouble finding a rod I like. I am familiar with rod building basics and am looking for a advice for a 7’ to 7’6” blank for redfish/trout fishing from a kayak. The new rod specs are confusing, but I need it to be able to handle occasional abuse from grandchild, So not looking for high end loomis but would like something better than Walmart off the shelf. Thanks in advance. PS have

If you specified what you wanted, and it was in writing, ???? Customer service seems lacking here. Lost your number? So he had to make a snap decision on the fly? Was a spiral wrap a better option? Lots of chances for getting the rod built and having a phone call or two to clarify just seems like good business. Good luck, maybe the builder did you a favor. However, I hate it when I get something

I have several rods at least 10 or 12 years old, to me they seem pretty much the same as when I got them. The newer rods seem to be better made, but I am one of the 95% that could not really tell the difference in subtle differences. I only fish once a week, due to work demands, sometimes not even that. I think tennis players generally place a lot more repetitive stress on the racket than I will

Tom's first link was for casting rods. Seemed simple enough. I am looking forward to trying it out. John

It was suggested to me that a steelhead blank, say 8'6", with the butt section cut down a bit, would make a great redfish rod. I would be sitting down in a kayak and this concept sounds good as I would end up with a 2 piece rod that could stored in the truck, but end up long enough for a distance cast. Drawback is also the length as fishing the mangroves would make it easier to get caugt in

Couple of the guys down here target tarpoon and they are way more willing to get towed around than I am. I would imagine a cobia would be more like a sliegh ride. Even a big bull red will move you for a while. I am just looking to make up distance as I will be sitting most of the time when I cast. It was sugeested that I take an 8'6" steelhead blank, cut the handle down a little and that wa

They will sell you whatever you buy but they will not change out the stuff in the kits. At least according to the reply i got when I wanted to switch out the handle that comes in the kit for a split grip. John

The new concept is based on the reel diameter and is specific to each reel. The best test is for you to test cast and see if you are happy. Link to the new concept rodbuilding article. Supposed to increase hook setting power and line casting distance. May only increase fuji guide sales. John

I use a manual turning technique, which basically means I use a hand to turn and a hand to apply the epoxy. I coat each guide, then I go back and start by wiping the brush clean and use it to wick the extra epoxy off, Every so often I turn the rod 180', wait a minute or two, then if any epoxy is sagging, I use the brush to wipe it off. I spend about two hours hand turning, the time increasing as

You are right, if a big fish is hooked the kayak becomes part of the drag system. Trout hardly ever, redfish, lot of the time if not anchored. But due to theft issues, I was trying to get the "most rod out of the shortest rod", since 6'6" is about as long as I can get in the truck if I am stopping and going inside, so the thoght of 2 or 300.00 worth of rod and reel just stuck in a

I am making rods for use while kayak fishing. The handle seems a little long for this type of fishing, ie sitting down while paddling. Is there any rough guidelines? I am not just going to chop the butt off, butt off, however, for the next one.... I was thinking 4.5 to 5.5 inches. Thanks, John

I need (want) a two peice rod for inshore trout/redfish/flounder. This will be my third rod. Wife says to make it inexpensive, last blank was St Croix. Will be using 3000 series reel, fishing from kayak. 7' to 8' range. 1/4 to 1 ounce or there abouts. Thanks, John

I only build an occasional rod for personal use, so take this for what its worth. I don't know that you did anything wrong. Caveat emptor. If there was a crack or other flaw, the threadwork was sloppy, the guides crooked, I get that. "I got what I ordered but it isn't what I meant to order?" Take the bad mouthing, he is just trying to get a better deal. John
