The torzite guides are 40% lighter than SIC, according to the Fuji. Are they that much slicker?

Tom: What's the reason that tournament casters prefer fewer guides?

Hi All: What is your experience or opinion on using torzite to replace snake guides on a fly rod? Will casting distance be significantly improved? I suspect hey will certainly hold up better when playing large running fish in the salt. Thanks in advance! --Rich

A rodmaker told me that it was used on some late model Leonards (cane). I too had never heard of that color. I think the thread in question was some shade of tan, gold, or beige.

Is anyone familiar with this color? It was discontinued around 1990 I believe. If anyone has a photo or can even describe the color I'd appreciate it. Better yet, if you have a spool for sale, I'll buy it! --Rich

Tom: I know you'vre done tests of CP vs No-Cp wraps and concluded that the CP wraps were only slightly less strong (10%) and that difference was within the margin of error for your tests. (Right?) Two questions: (1) were the wraps finished with epoxy and (2) would you expect the same results if spar varnish were used? Thanks!

Many of the classic bamboo rodmakers used lacquer or shellac as the initial finish on threads. The need to preserve the spool color is a modern fetish -- the traditional makers worked with the color that emerged from various treatments (e.g., Payne, Leonard, Edwards, Powell, Thomas).

Does anyone have experience with the FlexCoat lathe setup, the one that requires a variable speed drill to be clamped in? I would like to turn cork already assembled on a rod, not a mandrel, if that makes a difference. Thanks. --Rich

Will drying epoxy at 18 rpm mess up the finish? Thanks.
