I just got a band saw and started gluing up square EVA blocks for grips with trim bands and some diagonal eva strips. I wanted to try the diagonal pattern so the grip has the rings in it. Brown foam block with yellow rings - the Wyoming colors. Two questions 1) Do I need to let the contact cement dry for several days before turning it? I glued one set of 1/4" eva strips in then let it set

I usually glue up my cork rings on my rods for the grips and then turn the rod on my rod lathe. They turn out nice but if something goes wrong in the shaping I have quit a process starting over. I have a Jet mimi lathe and a renzetti rod lathe and wanted to try turning the cork on a mandrel. I thought I had seen articles in RM magazine but I can not remember. Do you just glue up cork with rod bon

I have built several 12 wts for tarpon and a 14wt for salifish with handles like Peter suggested. I do not like a split grip above the grip because you move the leverage point up the rod. I build a a continues grip that has a full well grip which is about 7 1/2" and a very thin cigar grip above it which is about 6". I always turn these grips after gluing all the rings on the blank. It

I use a pen with a fine nib to write on fly rods and wondered if there is a good source for gold ink? I have a great bottle of silver that flows nice but I have yet to find a good gold ink. It seems that the gold I have tried has really course pigment. I have tried decals and if I plan ahead I can get them made but I like the pen and ink look. Any suggestions out there?

I have two questions about decal application. I am using the stick and peel decals not waterslide decals. 1) If I am putting decals on an unsanded blank and it has the spiral ridges on the area of the blank I want to put the decal will it work out or am I going to get an air bubble issue? Do I need to put down a layer of wrapping finish? 2) I wrapped about a 2" area above the grip with Mad

I use hole saws that I bought at Ace Hardware that fit into my drill press to punch out a round EVA piece for a butt cap or fighting butt on fly rods out of square blocks of EVA. You can get them in all kind of sizes and they cut out about a 2" cylinder. The center drill bit is adjusted with an allen wrench and i can move the bit to leave a hole or not.

If I put color preserver on guide wraps will this really compromise the strength and durability of my guides. I like using Madiera thread and I know it needs CP. I put Madiera on a 5wt flyrod and on a couple of offshore trolling rods - Am I going to regret this long term. I know a Spey rod builder who absolutely will not put CP on the guides and I know his rods are solid. I was just wondering wh

Roger At the point where the blank begins to bend when deflected is that about the same place that the choker guide would be if I used the 27x the reel spool diameter suggested by the "new concept method. One method relies on knowing the reel to be used and the other on how the blank bends under load. I am not sure which reel I am putting on the rod but I know it will be pretty good sized

I usually build flyrods but I am putting together a couple of inshore saltwater spin casting rods and need some help on guide placement. We are using them to throw 2oz pencil poppers as teasers for rooster fish in Baja and then do a bait and switch with a flyrod. I was looking back through my RB magazines and I have the RB Mag CD with all the back issues. Which acticles help with the guide placem

Thanks for the input. I will try the 1/10 motor. When smoke comes out of the motor and it is too hot to touch that must mean my grip is done. Thanks again. Will

I may have fried my motor on my Clemens rod lathe. The motor is probably 15-18 years old and has been used to turn a fair number of cork handles. It is the same motor that Renzetti sells with their lathe but the pulleys and drive shaft are set up a little different now. Is there a good source for these motors? I may call Renzetti, but I wondered if there where other sources. I am going to blow o

I have been experimenting with the colored texalium for rod handles. When I cut the tubing I get some chipping on the edges and I wonder if anyone knows how to get a clean cut without the color chippng off. I think the color(red, blue, or green) is a layer over the silver color because the silver shows at the edges when bits of color flake off. I am using a small chop saw that is supposed to be fo
