On rare ocassions, I have seen and heard of carbon fiber blanks going soft. This is not typical and can likely be traced to manufacturing problem, or ,more likely stored in extreme temperatures. Rare, but does happen.

Thanks Dennis, I had considered that if I can't find one pink it would be easier to get a good pink by starting out with a white base coat, may go the route you suggest (auto spray shop) as I don't wnat to attempt a paint job at this point, (not set up for it) , and not about to pick up a can of spray paint at the the hardware store -LOL..

SInce a "craft" is generally defined as a trade requiring a skill, yes rodbuilding would be considered a craft. The more one practices (typically, or should I say "hopefully") the more one becomes skilled at their craft, until earning the somewhat redundant title "skilled craftsman or skilled craftswoman)

Thanks for the replies.
Chris- email sent.
I will be going by FS4U soon and will see what Robert or Ray have to say on the issue. This customer is looking for a budget blank, so CTS may be out of their range, but I'll have to check to be sure.
Thanks again.

I know I have seen some on the lighter side, but I have a customer requesting a build on a pink blank for his wife.
Looking for something in the 9' 1-3 oz. rating range for some light surf fishing.
Thanks,
Mark

Chris, I understand and don't totally disagree that the average caster may not be able to discern enough of a difference, and as some have said I ocassionally like the look of an underwrap.
I wanted to make as much of a difference as possible in the two rods. While underwraps by themselves don't add significant weight, guides with underwraps also get more epoxy across the entire guide, here a

I am going to offer an opinion that is likely to be in the minority. Unless you want underwarps for the look, and don't care about achieving ultimate performance, go ahead and use the underwraps.
I only build on long surf rods, 9' to me is an extremely small rod, that is the shortest rod I have ever built. Most of my rods are in the neighborhood of 13-14' and adding more weight (heavier guides

I agree with Kevin, I started out with flexcoat, but switched over to Threadmaster and love the stuff. I use the lite version almost exclusively, but still use high build for marbeling. The lite build will have a longer drying time but with less bubble trouble, and has good pot life.

10. Re: cp or not cp
Used the new CP from Lamar for the first time last night. The only CP I had used previously was the flex coat.
In comparison the Lamar CP is much thinner, and not nearly as milky white as the flex coat. I did have to change my application strategy. I am used to applying the flex coat CP with the rod turning at a fairly high RPM. This helps get a very smooth thin coat as I spread the CP out w

Thanks Tom- sounds like I can go back to using regular nylon and CP on my guide wraps- no worries then.
(Might also be time for me to get some updated video tutorials- great to have you and this site to dispel some of the old myths)

Mike- it would seem to me that as a rod is flexing the thread around a guide would be under varying levels of stress. I am mostly thinking now about the "tunnels" around the guide feet. It would seem that if this void were completely filled with finish it would protect and support the thread - from both sides of the thread inside and outside.
I suppose syringes and such can be used

Interesting- are we talking just decorative wraps- or ar we talking guide wraps. I was under the impression that CP shouldn't be used on thread over guide wraps- as it prevents the final finish from soaking into the thread and making strong contact with the blank- curious on other's thoughts on the guide wraps.

THanks Karen, left a voice mail at your number.
Tom , I have all the other blues, including the cobalt- was hoping that would work but the purple hue isn't quight right for this build.

Mark

17. Gudebrod Navy ?
It seems that gudebrod has discontinued offering thread in the Navy color.
Is this true ? and if so , does anyone have a (100 yd)spool they can spare for a reasonable fee ?
I'd prefer NCP if available, but will make do with nylon if need be.
If all fails, I'll look to some other brand as a last resort. Any recommendations ? It's for wrapping guides on a large surf rod, don't want to u

The CTS blanks are well worth looking into. Although a tad long they are very manageable and cast like a much shorter rod, due to their easy loading, and quality is top notch.
They have a thin, sensitive tip and are very light weight. The 5-8 oz rated model would be ideal for 6 & bait. Don't let the length fool you, yes it is 13'6" but casts more like a 12' rod, and can be trimmed down

I noticed the flexcoat finish to be fairly strong also. After switching to threadmaster lite, I discovered the smell was much much less noticeable, still it always pays to mix and work in a ventilated area whenever possible.
I agree that masking the smell is not the answer.

I have a hard time comprehending the practice of basing shipping charges on a percentage of the invoice total. It may not cost a dime more to ship a more expensive, yet less bulky item, than one that is less expensive but heavier or more bulky.
Charging more to ship a dozen spools of thread versus 3 or 4 ? IF everything fits in a flat rate box- I should be charged the flat rate- not more beca

If the rod can be shown to have been poorly put together- and it breaks-causing injury- there could certainly be liability issues.

Well , don't have a formed opinion myself, but can relay this info. Lamiglas makes some of their plugging surf rod models available in one or two piece, and it seems the serious die-hard pluggers want to stay with their one-piece rods- despite the transportation issues- and I am talking about 9 to 11 foot rods- so transporting a rod of that length in the one piece variety is certainly a considera

interesting thread- pun intended.
I agree with the Capt. - take any issues directly to the company- nothing wrong with enquiring if others are having similar problems with a product- but an internet board is not necessarily going to garner the attention of a company- you can't expect them to monitor the internet 24/7 on every possible forum to check for complaints about their products. If it's

As a general taxpayer no- if a CPA detemines he needs a specific ruling on a particular "rule" he can ask for guidance- or he can ask for a ruling on a situation, but if that is done you are stuck with the answer given for that particular scenario.
Give your CPA the full details- they will likely have more questions for you and should be able to give the proper advice for your parti

Some good advice so far- but be careful who you go to for tax advice. I am a degreed accoutant but went to a tax "specialist" when I first set up my business this year.
Got some of the worst advice I ever heard. On top of that they claimed to have no idea what the F.E.T. was all about.
As Tom said the ICRBE does meet the requirements for a business deduction- btw I believe you c

Curious to know how thin I can go with a foregrip made out of cork ring- this is going on a surf rod and I have reamed the ID out to close to 3/4 " and the OD is just a tad under an inch. I am thinking I may be getting to the point where it will not hold up if I take it much thinner.
I realize cork tape may be better for this application, I was just experimenting to see if this can be do
