The action depends on the size sharks you targeting. For the truly big fish, say 3 meters in length or longer, I advise going with a very action blank - one you can barely bend bi hand. Here’s why, big sharks can be tremendous fighters. You can only land them by turning them toward you and gaining line. Stiff rods make this easier because of the force you can exert against the fish. This is assum

What's the best way to repair separations in a split bamboo rod?

The reel seat is more valuable and harder to replace then the blank. I think I'll just use a slow curing epoxy and not worry about it. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Would either of those suggestions be able to soften enough to remove the reel seat and ferrule if ever I wanted to re-use them?

Gentlemen, Utmost Enterprises has taken care of this situation. It was my first time using them and I would rate their customer service as A-1. Carol could not have been more helpful. In the future I'm going to check with them first when I have to purchase something. I was totally impressed.

If the Reel seat is a Varmac it will be stamped as such on the body and have number and letter stamps as well. For example the one I refer to will be stamped Varmac RS-5H. The female section is approximately 1.075" I.D. I need the male ferrule and the lock nut or the entire assembly. I have a NOS Varmac NF 6H if you want to do a partial trade. Let me know if you can help me out. Best, Mike

Roger, thank you for the suggestion I have rollers like those. I'm looking for earlier vintage. I have a complete set of very old guides however the foot of each one is curved to fit the contour of a round blank. Since I'm using bamboo I don't think these would work. If you are familiar with the movie jaws, the rollers used on Quints rod are more like what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for a set of vintage / antique roller guides to recreate an old big game bamboo Rod. I would like to find the kind that look like small towers if you've ever seen those. Please let me know if you have anything like that

Gentlemen thank you for the replies. Test wrap is the way I'll go. I'm rehabbing an old bamboo boat Rod tip that I'm mounting into an Ocean City cradle reel. Some of those old rods were wrapped with a yellow under wrap and a green over wrap. A couple vintage rods I have are wrapped that way and the colors are very strong and vivid. I was hoping to replicate that look. Sometimes I get ahead of mys

I'm using a gudebrod golden yellow thread on a bamboo Rod. Will color protector preserve the color when I apply permagloss?

I'm restoring a bamboo saltwater boat Rod. I'm going to double wrap the guides. I'll use color preserver. My question is do I put the finish on the under wrap and let it cure before wrapping the guide and finishing that wrap or can I finish after everything is in place? I'm using U-40 one part finish.

I have not tried strap wrenches. I padded my vice and taped a pair of channel locks and applied pressure. I didn't want to mar any surfaces so I stopped before doing any damage. Do you think soaking in vinegar for a couple days or using kroil and heat might free it up?

28. Re: Wooden rod
Thank you Dennis. I adjusted my settings to show my email. Do you have large diameter tip tops? I saw that aftco has a size 36. I'm thinking maybe one of those would work. Anyone have one that size?
