Preserving color

I'm using a gudebrod golden yellow thread on a bamboo Rod. Will color protector preserve the color when I apply permagloss?

Martin,
When ever you have a question like this one, conduct the test for your self to discover the correct answer as you apply materials.

i.e. do a test wrap on another blank or round object. Apply your color preserver that you plan on using. Then, put on a coat of permagloss and see how it comes out for you.

Remember, just because someone else gets a certain result with his materials does not mean that you are going to get identical results with your materials.

Good luck

yes -- Most fly rods are done without CP so the choice is yours Without it will darken and become transparent A nice look
But as said try a test and see what you like

Martin

You did not indicate if the bamboo is 'blonde' or natural, or if it has been flamed or darkened.

If the bamboo is blonde or natural, the golden yellow might not darken so much with out using CP, and you might find translucent gold or yellow to be attractive. Without CP on a flamed or darkened rod the yellow might or might not be so attractive.

Making and finishing test wraps with and without CP is the only way to know with confidence whether you like the look, how well the CP is working for you, etc.

Last bamboo rod I built was blonde bamboo and yellow / goldenrod silk was terrific without CP until I added green trim and then to my eye it looked terrible. So I did what I prefer not to do, made more test wraps with CP on the yellow and that did the trick.

Test wraps are the only way to fly.

Gentlemen thank you for the replies. Test wrap is the way I'll go. I'm rehabbing an old bamboo boat Rod tip that I'm mounting into an Ocean City cradle reel. Some of those old rods were wrapped with a yellow under wrap and a green over wrap. A couple vintage rods I have are wrapped that way and the colors are very strong and vivid. I was hoping to replicate that look. Sometimes I get ahead of myself and need to slow things down and read this forum. I'll keep you posted on the results.

With yellow under and green over can depending on if CP is used can change the color of the finish wrap
A lot of wraps are done in order to make a certain color of the finial wrap
