Ok, I have stripped the old finish off the rod using a citrus stripper. The blank has gone from a shiny translucent root beer color to a flat dull brown. Will he color return when new finish is applied?
(Can I use spar varnish???)
Should I fill the cork handle next and paint it? Any particular paint recommended? Thanks for the advice Bill.

Thanks Bill. I have flocked before and really like the results. What's a good source for cork filler?

I am attempting to rebuild a rod for a friend. All guides must be replaced - no prob. The old clear coat has cracked and is scuffed up. The cork handle is showing its age and use. I want to flock the cork instead of replacing it. What do I use to fill and level the cork surface prior to flocking? How can I clean up the blank and get it looking like new again? Thanks...

If I understand it correctly, the thread we use to wrap a guide is primarily to hold the guide until the epoxy sets up. If that is the case then why is it not recommended to use thread one might find in a sewing shop?

37. Agate guides
I am re-building an old bamboo surf rod. I have used it for years with stainless steel boat rod guides. I recently removed the old guides and would like to replace them with a set of agate guides. My question is will the 45 feet of 60# braid I use as a shock leader score the agate? Will modern mono score the agate?

38. Open Runner
While on an off shore fishing trip this week I became intrigued by Alvey Rods and reels. I think I'm going to build a rod and buy a reel. Does anyone have a source for "open runners"? Any advice for building the rod? Anyone have an Alvey reel they want to sell?

I would like opinions on what would be the best guides to use for an 80# class spiral wrapped rod. This will be my first one. Thanks, MF

Hi Bill,
There was no no staining at all. (I was doing this as a rehab project to upgrade an old boat rod with wooden handles. I sanded the handles then painted them yellow to seal the wood. I also painted the solid fiberglass blank the same yellow. It was visually very striking especially when wrapped in red, blue, and green.) I let everything set up and dry for 72 hours and then put it in the

A couple of weeks ago I posted that I had successfully flocked a rod butt and fore grip. While it looked great I was somewhat skeptical as to the durability. Well I believe the durability is going to be a long lasting as others on this board have claimed. After a week of sharking, rod holders, pick up beds, boat gunwales, sand, etc., I saw absolutely no sign of wear. An amazing Donjer product tha

Don't worry my friend, I'll be dragging jaws up to the tune 8 - 12 footers! I'm sure he would like to bite the "Yellow Demon Slayer" or my hand or foot. I've had them race from the surfline onto the sand as they try to kill me. I'll keep you posted.

I did order the nylon kit! I had researched the archives and saw where nylon was for rod building. Proving again the value of this board. I still can't get over how good it looks! And feels. HAs anybody ever tried doing a whole rod?

45. First Flock
Just wanted to tell you I did my first flock job on a new shark rod and it turned out great and was way easier than I thought it would be. I bought the kit from Donjer and just followed the instructions. I used the yellow suede and it turned out beautiful! My only question now is how is the durability when used with rod holders. We see this weekend.
