This is my first attempt at cutting a reel seat and making an insert for it. Originally it was a Pac Bay casting reel seat. I cut the seat into thirds and added a cocobolo insert that I turned myself and covered with permagloss. Any comments?

This was my second attempt at the multi-thread guide wrap. I have two other rods I did in this format and I'm really getting used to doing the wraps towards the tips.

A multi-thread wrap with a gold trim. The wrap is alternating maroon and red threads. All guides to the tip are like the butt guide shown.

Here is a fine example of a centrepin reel made circa 1900 by known maker Henry Coxon.

High frame "match guides" on float rods is used to keep the line off the blank. Generally the rings are smaller because of the small diameter lines used by match men. They are also used to keep the a wet line from sticking to a blank. Thanks to all of the replys I got about the fuji match guides I found a set of Hopkins & Holloway SENYO match guides that I'd like to use on a fut

Thank you for the comments Olaf. But the salmon that are being mentioned are Chinook salmon and it's relative the steelhead (rainbow trout). I'm sure anywhere where there are Atlantic Salmon, using anything other than a married wing salmon fly would be considered sacrilegious. Please listen to Mike. Your post is very informative and I'd hate to see it get deleted. Thanks, Randy

Mike, Yes the match guides are used on long float rods. To the best of my knowledge they are used to keep the ultra thin diameter lines from sticking to the blank when wet. According to the UK rodbuilding site link that is posted a 13 foot rod calls for around 16 guides. The long float rods are used for controlling how the float tracks through the water aswellas to cushion light leade

I'm considering a pin or a closed face reel (with a push button face) with some fairly light line. With a main around six and leaders in the two pound class. I've looked into the BYLGs and I haven't seen sizes less than a seven ring but then again I could be mistaken. Spencer, have you used the rod for salmonids at all? From your description of it it sounds like it might work. Again thank

Thank you for all the replys. The guides I found were on the guides and blanks site at first. I really like how the Euro style rods are set up. How do the Harrison blanks perform. The rod is going to be used for stick float fishing in the warmer months. The Batson guides are really nice too and the good thing is they go down to a size 4 ring which is exactly what I'm considering. Only probl

Hello, I'm looking for a vendor in the US that sells the Fuji NMVST (tip top) MYSG (single leg guide) and NMVSG (double foot guides). I've looked at a few of the sponsors but I'm having no luck. I did find them on a English tackle site but I was wondering if any of the sponsors carry or can get them. I even looked at the Fuji site with no luck. I'd like to give my business to a sponsor come

Phil, How's the fishin' been in NY this fall? Anyways, on a few of the rods I built last year I used a very fine artist brush and thinned out white arcrylic paint I bought from a craft store. I'm sure a calligraphy or quill pen would do better and neater work. Randy

Paul, I suggest staying away from the size 6 Recoils if you don't like the concept style guides on a float rod. Going with the 8s to the tip is a really great idea. I wish I went that route last summer when I wrapped mine. But to keep it light go with three or four coats of perma gloss w/o color preserver. Thought about a 16 for a butt guide never a 12. Looks like something I'm going t

Tim, I think I mentioned this in another post about this same subject. I really don't have a set measurement when spacing guides. I usually tape them on and adjust the spacing while doing static testing and test casting. With the placement of the reel in different places IMO you really can't use a set spacing. Also if it looks right generally it'll be right. This method works for me. A

Check out the Rainshadow ISA1355F 11"3"' 2pc / ISA1446F 12 2pc. These rods should give you enough leverage to set the hook from that deep. The long rods work for long hook sets when trotting the streams for steelhead and I don't see why they wouldn't work in this situation. Randy

I think the golf club analogy was pretty interesting. Will a $700.00 ultra large headed club allow a stiff of a golfer to drive farther and straighter? I doubt it. He will still muff it, slice and hook the ball. If his technique isn't refined the club won't do him any good. But that same club in the hands of a Tiger Woods, WATCH OUT! I guess this is a reason I haven't invested the thousands

Tim, I've read through all of the responses that have been given to you. Everyone has some helpfull tips for you. Generally speaking floatrods are tip heavy by nature. Some of the ways you could balance the rod is by lead weights which was already mentioned but I wouldn't reccomend doing this because it'll make the rod heavier. You could also incorporate a peice of brass into the design of t

I used one for about two seasons for my two peice float rod (13'). It made more room in the Rover until I got rid of it for something that gets way better gas milage. I glued a end cap to the bottom made a cut out for the centrepin and then used two springs connected to eye screws that held the top end cap in place. It worked out great. Made trips to MI and NY w/o loosing a rod. I didn't use

Since the rod (I'm assuming) will be used on your West coast salmon and steel a midframe spinning guide should work out just fine #20 for the butt guide to maybe #6 at the tip. As far as guide spacing goes I usually go with approx. one guide per foot and then adjust the spacing during the test casting and static testing. I don't have any set measurements for placement and this seems to work for

Check out some of the European rod companies. Trabucco makes telescoping big game rods. The Bolognesie rods (sp?) are usually VERY long and they are all telescoping. Like you said Billy it's kind of funny these rods are very popular over seas but here they're reserved for the snoopy rods. Kind of like soccer and the metric system. Randy

You're going to have to static test the blank and move the guides around like everyone else has said. Bill, Where did you end up getting the blank from? Was it Harrison's ? Randy

Bill, Here is a link I found that has a 20' rod listed. I didn't see a price or whether or not it's offered as a blank. Try contacting the company for more details. Hope this helps you out. Randy
