1. 2nd wrap
Used Gudebrod Candy Apple Red, Gudebrod Lt. Yellow, and Sulky Metallic Blue. Sulky Metallic is nice thread to work with. When I started the wrap I was surprised that the Lt. Yellow appeared to be white when surrounded by the red and blue.

2. First wrap
This is my first wrap on the second rod that I’ve built. It turned out to be a really good learning experience. Thank you to everyone who answered my questions, and special thanks to Putter for all his input.

I'm considering building a few rods that will be used for ice fishing Lake Trout. Anyone have blank recommendations?
Thank you,
Sam

I agree with Stan. Sulky metallics are better to work with when compared to other metallics I've used.

I have used both Gudebrod A and Sulky black metallics and prefer Sulky over Gudebrod. IMO, in general, Sulky metallics stay together better and are easier to wrap.

Marvin, I agree with Leon. Putter has a very good DVD which demonstrates how to create butt wraps with braided metallic thread.

I also live in San Jose, CA. and no RM for me either. San Jose must be a little behind with the mail.

One valuable tool for me has been the addition of good lighting in my work area.

Joe, at Black Dog Tackle, also carries them. His service is excellent.

15. Re: Shop Light
Phil,
If you're looking for portable lighting check out the Ott-Lite. I have 2 which are placed at each end of the work table. They’re a bit pricey, but the light they give off is fairly natural and moderately bright. I'm not aware of any sponsors that sell them but joann.com has a large selection.

Thanks for the suggestions. However I'd like to use a section of scrap, to display different color combos choices, for anyone interested in have a rod built from this blank.

Does anyone know where I can purchase some Tiger Eye blank scraps?
I'd like to try some trial wraps, with different thread colors, before wrapping the blank I have.

Golden Witch (a sponsor on the right) has a book "Fishing Rods by Divine - Michael Sinclair". I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but it might be worth checking out.
Here's the link (the book is listed near the bottom of the page):

When using a white china marker I've had small chunks of it end up on the threads, which is very easy to see when finish is applied. Maybe the marks I am making are too heavy.
Does this happen when using a white out pen?
Does the white out pen and/or Sharpie bleed?

I've reused Cabela's shipping boxes which have the same print on them as the Cabela's rod tubes and the mail police have not yet shown up at my door :-).

Michael,
Try the search using "cloudy decal". It should turn up similar questions/answers.

I seen Putter's technique on a DVD he created and gave it a try. It works great.
