I didn't epoxy over the first layer but it still looks cool and I am very excited to try it on a open water rod.

Look for a product called "Cold Snap Reel Wraps" on the web. We use these for ice rods with great success.

Try these out guys, if anything it is a nice use of re-purposing and reminds us all to think out of the box. We use these on ice rods, without reel seats, all the time. Actually started as bands for sheep or used to keep minnow bags closed up.
www.coldsnapcover.com then click on “Cold Snap Reel Wraps”

Agree completely with Buzz - durability is a concern, but more importantly do you want to feel the bite or see the bite. Just like an open water rod, species and lure specifics are key.

Jeremy - both said they throw a lot of Bulldogs and other big plastics.

10. Muskie Rod
Looking for some expert input. I have a couple guys who want me to put together a 9' XH Muskie casting rod for them. I've built some larger pike rods but not anything this big.
Recommenations welcome please.

Scott - we build almost always with recoils and a #12 spinning works really well as long as the handle has a bit of a downward angle towards the rod to help with transition. Otherwise I use a minima #10 if running with minima #6 fly. I've always wondered about using the Minima Match Guides just to get a bit more height but haven't tried, may be an option though.

Michael,
I have had no truble adjusting after the fact, it's really a small about of glue that ends up on them so as soon as you get the guide wrapped a little pressure breaks the glue and slides normally.

I always have used hot glue as well. Heat the guide foot, touch to glue stick and place on blank. Watch the fingers...can get hot.
Another good source for elastic bands is RC Car fuel lines. Have had pretty good luck with those in the past too.

the 24" MHX Finesse would be a nice fit too

Scott - you could also use a single foot fly guide to tie on as well. works pretty slick on ice rods.

Scott I use a #12 spinning (Minimas or Recoil) and run with #6 singly foot fly guides for running. you can probably get away with a little smaller since you are doing recoils and snake. my thoughts, good luck!

On ice rods I have found that wrapping down the blank for the tip top helps as well.

Not sure how well they work for eva but there are some photos of "drill lathes" in the photo section. To Tom's point they are pretty crude but effective with cork in my experience.

Mike:
I really like the 2 solid graphite blanks from Jann's ($8.95), TBros does make a nice blank but agree with what others have said on the money, I've also gotten blanks from Ron at Schneiders and MHX too. One other source I've used is Sportsmans Direct.

Hey Guys,
Quick question for you. I was given a older blank from a friend over the weekend and am wondering if anyone has any information on it.
It is a 2 piece Shakespeare SGF096-67. Just looking for some basics on it as I am not a fly rod guy and curious if anyone knows the specs.
Thanks in advance,
Andy

I don't often, if ever, coat cork on an open water rod but love adding the uniqueness of coated handles on ice rods. I've tried different approaches with nothing resulting in a disaster thus far. My favorite is just using flex coat over "non-plain" cork, a combination of burled and burnt makes a unique look.

I have used several different brands. To echo Roger's point lots of different ones work well. Size wise I often start with a 8 recoil spinning guide then use 8's or 6's in the wire fly guide style to finish out.

I have used titanium wire style fly guides in the past and been pretty happy with them for guides. The other thing the wire allows is a little more interrior room if you are fishing out of the shack to avoid icying up. As far as the tip top I have used a guide as well, kind of a paid to wrap but seems to do the trick.

NP Mike - I just looked and can't find the packing list. If you can't figure it out with Ron see if he can look me up. In June I ordered 2 guides from him the one you are looking for and a XBYTLG10 (that is the one you don't want :) ). Sorry I couldn't help more, but I'm sure Ron will get you squared away.

Mike, I recently replaced the same guide a while back. I ended up ordering it from Schneiders Rod Shop (see sponsors). They were able to help me out with a very close match. I will check the number when I get home tonight. Good luck.
