Hey everybody, long time forum stalker here. I've been scouring the internet in regards to this topic but I can't seem to find anything. I'm attempting to make a centerpin/float rod with a wooden handle from butt to reel seat to offset the heavy guides. I have a 12 inch piece of cocobolo that I want to trim one inch or a half inch off of and make into the rear grip and put a half inch of cork

So the other day i was paid to haul away items for a customer and she had an old sewing machine bench unit. It has the motor down below the bench and the belt coming up through the table. Where can i find a pulley and chuck that i can mount to make this my rod wrapping bench? I ll try to figure out how to post pics

I have a brother who is wanting to make a couple wood handles in a shop class. I have no experience with wood handles. First question is what is a good type of wood to use for handles? Second is what is the proper way to finish the handle to seal it completely? Third question should i have him bore a hole to the largest diameter of the blank that each handle will mount too and use tap

I have access to a lathe in a machine shop. I want to turn my corg rings which are glued to the blank-old school method. Blank is graphite. Lathe has 3 jaw chuck. Anyone out there have experience doing this? Question is....what is method to secure the blank in chuck? It's a fly rod, area to put in chuck is where I will mount the reel seat. Certainly don't want to crush the blank. Thanks

Hello all, Just received my Renzetti rod lathe and let me begin by saying - WOW! Wish I had ordered it 2 years ago when I first asked you all - your recommendations about upgrading the equipment I had. Beautifully machined and fits together almost seamlessly. Just plain awesome craftsmanship! Anyway, I want to set the lathe up on the opposite side of the table I had originally planned (wife th

Cork grips are pretty much history. The best cork rings available are more like a cross between an oak tree and a sponge, and it takes 100+ years for a cork oak to grow big enough to harvest cork. Do any manufacturers of synthetic fly rod grips offer grips in different (larger) diameters? Not everyone is a "medium", and it shouldn't cost much to make different grip sizes. ,

After years of procrastinating while turning small reel seats, etc. on my Renzetti lathe with the standard 1/10th hp motor, I decided to buy the, almost $200.00, turning motor with bracket listed in the Renzetti online catalog. I already have the Renzetti tail stock and tool rest and would like to continue using my Renzetti lathe for this purpose as opposed to buying another additional wood or m

I'm about to purchase a wood lathe. What are some good choices for lathe chucks? I was looking at a collet style for the head stock and a live center in the tail stock. Does anyone us a Jacobs style in the tail stock to ensure the mandrel doesn't walk backwards off the tail stock? I could just use mandrels without the ends center bored then correct? Below are links to the parts I'm looking at.

Happy New Year, All! My sweetheart surprised me this Christmas with a power wrapper, and had heard me speak of getting the upgraded chuck, so she looked it up in my Mud Hole catalog, and bought the ATC wrapper with the Pac Bay chuck. I've read enough reviews to conclude that this isn't the best upgrade available (don't get me wrong...no disrespect intended to any of the sponsors here). I've tr

Question for rod builders: Does anyone have (or has anyone had) experience using softwoods to turn reel seat inserts? If so, are there any durability issues, since they are not as hard as hardwoods, or does the kind/type of finish used alleviate that? I have no experience with this, but I've been eyeballing some softwoods that I thought would make some really cool reel seats, so I was just cur

I have been using my cordless drill and sand paper to turn fiberglass ice rods down to what I want. What are you guys using to do this? Is there a better set up for it? I am hoping to find something a little fast cuz this seems to take quite a bit of time.

I am looking to build my first rod and it will be a Centerpin / Float rod. In doing the individual cork rings, I have watched videos where they put them on a mandrel, glue them together and after sanding ream out the whole handle. I have also observed each individual ring get reamed and fitted on the blank, then the blank itself get spun for sanding the handle. What are the opinions of each techniqu

I'm using a drill press to turn handles. I found that when I glued up handles of different materials, that just holding sandpaper to shape them doesn't work because the different materials erode differently, leaving high and low spots. Bob Meiser suggest using a sanding block. That works better, and for the transitions I wrap the paper around a beer bottle to get some of the concave curves. Yet,

I've built a half a dozen so far and noticed a few things I think I need to work on to get to the next level. My rods work great - they are for me and how I fish, have only built one for a friend. I'm very happy with their function but fit and finish could be better. The rods are mostly lighter to medium saltwater types, flounder, seabass bottom rods, spiral wraps on the conventional ones. - I

Hello Y'all , I have a question or more so asking about input about the advantages of a power wrapper over a hand wrapper,, noted I understand the speed and possible production, do they help in smaller wraps as far as say 2 or 1 guide size on a fly rod? I understand the cost between the two depending on quality/high end to lower cost brands. I am only on my 5th build and do not plan on selling an

Hello rod builders I had a very scary experience last night. I was turning eva grip on a mandrel for the first time and during the process the mandrel pop out on one end. Nearly took my hands off. Luckily I turn off just in time without injuries but my mandrel is bent on one end. I have the regular jaw that we use on the Renzetti lathe on the headstock and a live center on the tail stock. No

I want to glue and shape cork pieces together to form flyrod grips. Will I need a wood lathe? And are there any cheap, but good, mini wood lathes to fit on a workbench? And do both head stock and tail stocks need chucks to firmly secure a steel mandrel placed through cork stock (i.e. glued together) like you have on a power drill? Has anyone ever made a wood lathe using a power drill

Just getting started in this new hobby. I'm building a trout rod for my son for Christmas. What do you guys use for shaping the cork handle??? I've seen one out on Mudhole but it's a little expensive for me, just starting out in this. I really didn't want to put out that kind of money until I see if I like this or not. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I'm new here and looking for some advice. I'm going to start building fly rods as a hobby and was wondering which brand tools are most recommended, Flex Coat, the CRB brand by Mudhole, or any other brand? I will be purchasing the full starter tool kit- hand winder, etc. Looking forward to your comments.

I have conducted a respectable amount of research on my own, but I ended up determining that I needed to join a forum to get useful opinions and facts from people with real-world experience. I have fished for a over two decades now, and I have experience ranging from salt water and fresh water, from ponds, to trout streams, the Great Lakes, to the Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. I want to find out

I'm trying to piece together a small lathe or wrapping motor or any motor actually that I can mount a chuck to and shape or restore cork grips that are still on old rods. I guess you could call it restoration of vintage rods w/o changing their original look. I realize that components may not be available but there are reasonable substitutes. I have a power wrapper but I'm wanting to avoid getting

Hi to all you happy wrappers, thanks for reading and hopefully assisting to resolve my Perma Gloss issues. Without using PG before, I read the application directions and purchased a couple good quality, 3/8in artist brushes. The first coat applied to the rotating butt section resulted in a slightly streaky, lumpy finish, obviously from my “thin” coat being thicker than what PM considers thin. Al

Hi guys, I've noticed that some high end rods such as graphite leader have these indented butt caps. They'd not get scratched as much and look amazing. Has anyone tried to make this? I can get a metal plate engraved, but how would I go about recessing it and getting the surrounds right? It'll be fiddly but I'm open to ideas. Cheers, Nick
