Just picked up a turncrafter 12" vari-speed lathe and need to get some tools. Any insights as to what tools I will use the most for turning handles? I received a Barracuda 2 key chuck system that comes with a bunch of parts. I know I need to pick up a live tailstock center, but what size/type would work best with a mandrel? Bill

I rushed a build and am now faced with a dilemma. The foregrip needed a little more shaping than it got. The rod is completely finished with a 9 guide concept system. I have 4 wheel type rod supports and am tempted to put it back on the lathe. Am I nuts for even thinking about this?

I use a power wrapper (Renzetti I believe?) as a dedicated lathe. It works great for turning cork, but I was wondering if anyone has turned hard wood with a setup like this? Is the extra time it takes to shape the wood not worth it? I'm looking into purchasing a proper wood lathe, but if I can make this power wrapper work that would be ideal since funds and space are pretty limited for me r

i have the complete set of turning mandrels from mudhole but find myself occassionally needing off size (diameter) ones. yes, i enlarge the OD using tape when necessary but life would be a lot simpler using closer to correct size mandrels. also theirs are too long for my short bed lathe and i have had to cut them to length. if anyone had a metal lathe and makes mandrels that won't break the bank

My first attempt at reaming a cork handle resulted in a 1" split running lengthwise at mid point of the handle! I made a reamer using a 3/4" wide 100 grit strip that I epoxied to an old salt water rod. At first I teamed by hand for 1/2 hr and wasn't getting much done so I chimed the reamer in a cordless drill which is when the split occured! Is this common with cork handles? I got t

So I've made my grips for my centerpin with a mixture of burl cork rings, rubberized cork ring and stabalized wood. Now I've put these together on a quarter inch mandrel and need to Reem them out. Anyone have any suggestions on how to bore out these grips? Will a regular cork reamer work or do I need to do something different because of the stabalized wood? Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks

I was given a Central Machinery 14 x 40 lathe. I woul like to put an adjustable Chuck on it but it has a 5/8 spindle and I can't find an adapter to go from 5/8 to 3/4 or 1 inch. Any ideas out there? I have searched all over the Internet trying to find one...no luck. Maybe someone with more experience with lathes can steer me in the right direction. It is a model T31082 lathe.

I salvaged a motor, switch and foot pedal from a sewing machine and would like to use them for a lathe primarily for finish application. The motor had a belt to a gear which I also saved. Does the motor need to be geared down to be useable or can I work right off the motor shaft? Any other tips or suggestions appreciated.

Coming back to rodbuilding after a few years away. Needed to upgrade my old wrapping system and wanting something that could be broken down and stored in it's own case. Needed to be compact but able to extend up up to at least 6ft. Most of the wrappers I've seen, even the "portable" ones have a fixed bed length that makes them cumbersome. A few days in the wood shop and I came up with t

Hey folks just wanted to share my experience with other news so they can learn from me. I installed a rear grip yesterday and let it cure last night. I used the technique of putting rubber cement on as a lubricant and paste epoxy only where the grip was. I still sanded out the grips a bit with a reamer. When I put it on, it slid on so easily that I kinda dropped to the floor. It was a vast

I have seen several images of corn cob handles. I searched the forum and came up empty. So my question is how are these handles made. Are they epoxy empregnated like cork? I am from Nebraska and they would make perfect handles for a pair of rods I am thinking about building. Thanks. John

Roger, this is mostly for you as you gave me a lot of lathe instructions....but, I'm a newbie and have already failed at my first order on chucks. When the ordered the lathe is bought this chuck for the head...2 In. MT1 Shank Mini Lathe Drill Chuck... It's a 3 jaw chuck that I planned on using in the head stock and using a live center for the tail stock. I don't know why but I thought I'd be able

This will be my first build and I have a lot invested with this block of stabalized wood and don't want to go wrong here. What's a good glue to bring these 2 together on the mandrel? I have wood glue and 30 ton epoxy. I was planning on using the epoxy, is there a better adhesive for cork and wood than wood glue and should I ever use epoxy to hold cork together? Now that I think about it I feel li

I finished my first cork grip today on my new lathe. Posted a picture on the photo site. Had alot of fun and the grip is usable so im happy. Not perfect but im happy. Learned alot and still have alot to learn. Have a couple questions regarding lathe setup. Should my tailstock be spinning at the same speed as the mandrel? It was only spinning a little bit. I had some masking tape on mandrel at hea

Alright. I had a topic about a power wrapper and its capabilities so I decided to just buy a lathe from harbor freight....18 inches. Will an 18 inch mandrel fit into an 18 inch lathe? I already ordered the three jaw chuck, but I can't find a 1/4 in mandrel that's less than 18 inches....anyone know if I can just order an 18 inche mandrelfrom mud hole and be good to go? Or is it the exact size....t

I have the American tackle power wrapper from mud hole. I plan on using this thing to turn cork with but haven't used it yet. I'm wondering will this thing with the stock chuck be able to handle turning burl cork rings and some stabilized burl wood or do I need to upgrade the chuck to the aluminum one?

Hi, my objective is to make my own cork grips for flyrods and spinning rods and also learn how to do inlays and things like that. Ive been doing research on the subject on here and elsewhere. I'm getting ready to purchase a lathe and accessories. The confusing part for me is the tool chucks, keyless chucks, tail stocks etc. Are the following items proper and compatible with each other. Im open to

As I mentioned a few times I been out of rod building for some time now and have recently ordered everything to build 2 new rods. Well of course half the guides are back ordered. Tonight I started taking a look at what rods were good and which needed to retire. I have a rod that was my second rod I ever built that I'm very partial to. It has served as my work horse since around 2002. It was built

I am making my first attempt at building a custom rod handle. I am planning on using all-thread, large washers held in places nuts on each end of the cork once the epoxy glue is applied. Is there anything I can apply to the all-thread to keep epoxy from adhering should some inadvertently leak through? Any help and or advice are greatly appreciated!

I am planning on turning my first grip and have a few questions. The first deals with the design concept. How do you come up with the design pattern you intend to use. Since this is my first time turning a grip I do not have cork, burl, or burnt rings on hand to put next to each other and see if I like it. Is there an easy way to visualize the look of the finished grip before hand? Next questions

I'm guessing everyone has there own thoughts on what power wrapper to start of with but I'm ready to take the plunge and get one. I thought about making one but it makes me kinda nervous. So what a should I start off with I don't really want to spend over $400 but I do want something that will last and perform. Would even entertain the thought of buying used. From what research I have done it loo

I have a 37in shopcraft wood lathe. I cant seem to figure out how to post a pic of it. Please email me with some suggestions of possible. gossglen@roger

I'm looking to step up from my drill press to a small hobby lathe, but I think I'll have the same problem. I've never used a lathe. What do you use for a mandrel and how do you attach it to the tail stock? I'm sure a picture is worth 1000 words here...Currently, I thread my cork on to a threaded rod and trap it with wing nuts and washers. I chuck one end into the drill press and have the other en

I was watching a You-tube video and saw a lathe where had the cork was already attached to the rod blank. The majority of the blank went through the head stock( guides were not attached yet). Does anyone know what type of lathe this is and where I might find one---- a company not necessarily a store?

Hello, has anyone tried putting decals on a reelseat? Specifically on the wood insert on a fly rod reelseat. I'm not sure how I would add finish to this..also does anyone do custom decals? Thanks.
