As title, , if I decide to turn the handle myself for spey rod, is tail stock neccessary ? I have the ALPS Power wrapper, which could be added the ALPS tail stock (another $165, quite expensive ) I know the tail stock is used to hold the other end of the mandrel / blank. But I check the Mudhole video and they turned handles on the "RBS handle turning kit" which the mandrel is

Probably been asked a 1000 times but what is the best tool that leaves the cleanest, straitest cut for EVA. Ive been using the D thread while turning on the lathe. This is ok but looking for a more precise method to keep everything square and straight. I've read Jap pull saws with a fine TPI on a jig work well? Cheers Adam

This past weekend I busted two inserts trying to increase the ID to fit a 5wt fiberglass blank. The butt is 0.455" and I'm having trouble finding a prefab insert that would fit this. Can anyone suggest a part? I'd prefer a natural wood insert. Thank you. FYI I don't have a drill press or lathe so the breaking was 100% my fault. Ryan

Was thinking about picking up a Renzetti Rod Lathe but was wondering if the ALPS tool rest and tail stock would work on them.

I just finished a rod and was putting the reel on it when the cork foregrip cracked. I used a Fuji Tvs reel seat with a hidden thread sleeve and cork foregrip. As I tightened down the cork foregrip it cracked, apparently between the cork rings. When I back off the foregrip the crack in the cork lessens, but if I tighten it down enough to secure the reel firmly it widens considerably. I’ve built s

There have been a few recent posts concerning grip reaming, cork in particular. I have experienced difficulty ultimately obtaining a PERFECTLY CENTERED HOLE, either from my reaming or even starting with an original bore which was not centered to begin with. Without faulting the tools designed for drilling or reaming grips such as Dream Reamers, piloted spade drills and reverse-cutting spade drill

I would like to do a survey, with your help, to find out what are the most popular lathes used by rod builders for future articles on tools I will be doing. Thanks in advance for your input.

So my brother and i were screwing around earlier, he has a 4 jaw chuck, a Jacobs super chuck, various live centers and spur centers.. With the 4 jaw on the head stock and a 16" drill bit chucked up in the jacobs at the tail we started drilling.. His lathe has about 3" of travel.. I was nervous starting the lathe back up after moving the tail in..then it smoked a bit lol.. We stopped

Hi Everyone, I can’t help but get into something and have to try and build some part of it myself... So here I am, going to try and build a rod . (except normally I do boat loads of research before I start) This time I want to just jump in and build a rod and learn as I go. I’m going to make a “Fluke Rod” or so I think anyway... I came across a spiral wound fiberglas blank toda

I’m exploring options for a turning cork, EVA, and the occasional experiment with other materials. I figure I can buy a hobby lathe or an alps power wrapper.(been wanting one) I believe the hobby lathe would perform better, but the power wrapper has more uses. I’m I expecting to much from the power wrapper or will it be ok for the occasional turning project? Thanks for any input!

Hi everyone. I recently purchased a shopsmith Mark V with primary intention of using it as a lathe. My primary use will be handles and reel seats, and I'm thinking I may also get into pens, but that is an afterthought. I am wondering what I should be looking at getting in the way of chucks and chisels and such. I know I will need an adapter to to from the shopsmith to a normal lathe chuck,

I just received the Delta blanks I ordered from NFC in December, and plan to sand them smooth. I've read every post I could find on how to do this and think I have a pretty good idea, but just want to confirm before I get started. I plan to start with 400 grit, and finish with 600. Both wet and dry sand, using a block. It's my understanding that these ridges are leftover resin, and while my g

Hi finally back after a long sickness. I'm ready to take the big jump to a rod lathe, I want to make cork handles and maybe do some fancy wraps. I am completely lost in all the late and grate wrappers and lathes and wonder if someone can help, Renzetti is just tooooo much and wonder what is best just below that. Nick R.

Ive been trying to get my brother to turn some handles for me for over 6 months.. All of a sudden he spends 300$ on stuff to do it.. Lol I seem to recall a discussion i had a while back about the possibly of 'hard spots' when dealing with carbon fiber grips.. If memory serves, whlever that was that brought that up talked about applying a foam, or neoprene barrier on wooden handles to reduce t

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!! After reading the article on Birch Bark Handles in the latest issue of RodMaker, I am very intrigued with the concept and would like to give one a go myself. The problem is that I do not know what to look for and where to obtain quality birch bark suitable for a rod handle. Have any of you fabricated such a handle and/or can suggest a supplier? My calculations suggest a

Hi everyone, I'm considering buying a lathe to turn handles and reel seats. As well as likely get into some woodworking projects with it. Looking for any recommendations on what to look for. Don't want to spend too much, but also don't want to end up with junk by being too cheap. Any recommendations here? What should I be looking for? From my early research the potential problems I'm se

I've never been a fan of filling my cork grips, I honestly prefer the way they look and the texture my grips have without filler. However, I'm reworking a handle and I will need to fill the pits. I've heard of guys using min-wax wood filler. Any idea what color I should use? There's 3-4 different colors that look close, and I'm not certain which to use.

Looking to purchase one. Not familiar with them at all . Simply looking to shave off some of the fore and rear eva grip of an already built 2 piece rod that looks 1.25 inch in diameter. Will any of the lathes work for an already built rod or specific one I should buy? Thanks, Mark

What I have is a rod turner set up for drying. I have a motor and want to use it for doing the wraps. What I want to do is find approximately 1/4in shaft with bearings that I can attach it a board and put a pulley on one end and something to hold the rod on the other end. Any one know where to find any of this (shaft, pulley or rod holder)?

I'm working on a rod with an EVA fighting butt. I put at least a 1/8" layer of masking tape over it before I put it in the lathe, and thought I was being careful not to over-tighten, but apparently I did, as the jaws left minor indents in the EVA. It's been a day since I removed the tape, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. This is a donation rod for an event on June 24th, so I

Hi everybody. I recently decided to upgrade my Pac Bay Power Wrapper chuck and install the Alps Chuck Upgrade. I usually hand wrap but recently had a wobble going on in my Rikon lathe, so I decided to turn the cork grips on my power wrapper. The plastic chuck that comes with the power wrapper doesn’t hold up long so I haven’t used it in years due to it starting to wobble too. Pac Bay was nice eno

I'm preparing to build and turn my first cork ring grip on my mini lathe. I've read on here and elsewhere about building grips and it seems like most builders favor various epoxies and Titebond. Is there any harm in using regular Elmer's Carpenter Wood Glue? I used to use it a lot for furniture making and it works extremely well in that capacity but I'm curious why I don't read more about it bein

I am designing a set of rods (5 wt and 7/8 wt) that I think will be used as prizes for a tournament we are planning. The blanks are a matte black and I am going with black EVA grips with red inserts. What I want to do is place the inserts at a 45 degree angle to the eva on the front and rear third, and two inserts crossing at as 45 in the center. The question I have is what is the best way to

I've been researching and planning to buy a lathe for like a year now. Finally ready to pull the trigger ... I think. Does this look like a reasonable list of things I need? I've got a 1/4" x 18" mandrel already. Going to get the cork and stuff from Mudhole. Additions, subtractions, and recommendations welcome. *Turncrafter Commander 10 in.
