Hello, I need someone to set me straight and tell me if im being an idiot. Im currently building a 4 piece, 5ft 6 fibre glass bfs rod but im running into guide placement issues. This is my first casting rod build. I currently have 9 eyes and taped on the rod handles well. Casts well and performance is good. My issue is under load the line touches the blank. built a rod on an NFC Delta SW764, or Delta SW765 blank? I ordered one each yesterday that I will be using to build a swimbait / glide bait rod, for bass fishing. I don't really see myself, at least for now, throwing any baits that weigh more than 3 oz., with the majority of them being in the 1 1/2 - 2 oz range. Hud 68 Special, S-Waver 168. Rago Thunderhawk Cha Cha ..... baits in that size range

Has anyone built on a NFC ST 1304-2 IM? Looking for reviews. Is it light enough to protect 8lb leaders? I'm looking for something with just a hair more backbone than the 1303 Xray for a spiral wrap build. I'm hesitant to try the 4pc options with a spiral wrapped rod.

Good evening. First post. I have a bass crankbait rod for lures 3/4 to 1 ounce (St. Croix Mojo BassGlass, 7'-04", MH/M) but under heavy load the line rubs the blank. Personally, I don't like that. So I have two questions: 1) In your opinion, is line rub really a problem or not? 2) If I would re-position the guides (and add some) how do I go about determining the new placement for no line rub

I'm putting together, some offshore rods. The client wants tiger thread. I have never read or heard if it is as strong as regular thread. I'm going to under wrap with A size, I have some D size tiger thread and was planning on using it for my over wrap. Anyone know if it is the same strength?

I have been building for a few years and always used the same technique for finding the rod's spine. However, I have been wondering if my method is correct. I have read a lot of ways to spine and watched many YouTube videos, but something doesn't seem right to me. Most of the discussions about spinning the rod say to roll the rod until it jumps/pops etc. Then mark the rod. So here's my que

I'm looking for recommendations for an SPJ rod for targeting 100lb class bluefin out of San Diego on a head boat. My buddy is going on an SPJ specific multi-day bluefin tuna trip out of San Diego in May and needs a heavier SPJ rod. He is well versed in SPJ but has never needed a setup quite this robust. I've never built an SPJ rod but would love to give it a shot for him. I know the usual bla

I have been building with CRB LZR guides, and they have worked well so far. With the recent NFC sale, I ordered a C6O2 725 blank and I've been entertaining the idea of using a titanium guide train on it to take advantage of the reduced weight and try to avoid having the blank be tip-heavy. I don't know much about the titanium guides that are out there, other than they are pretty pricey, and I am

I’m still pretty new to rod building and this forum but I’m head over heels for rod building I just got done with my first build a rainshadow immortal 6’10” m xf spinning set up. Now I’m thinking of building a bfs rod as well for smallmouth river fishing and large mouth as well I’m considering the nfc SJ 703-1(X-Ray LMX) but I’m completely open to other options for blanks and components. I still

What is the difference between high build and low build? I am deciding between flex coat or U40 duragloss LS Supreme for thread finishing. Which is most preferred by builders? Since I don't have a drying motor, which epoxy would set the fastest? I think I will apply the thread finish and leave the rod turning on the finishing motor until it set well enough that I can take the rod off an

Hi all. I just received an order of 18 spools of ProWrap threads to build my fly rod with only to find it's a lot finer than I thought it would be and with my tired old eyes almost impossible to work with. I have a lighted magnifying lamp that is about 3x and wear reading glasses but it's still very hard to see what I'm doing. When I need to get both hands in to do things it's in the way so

I build Bass, Panfish and primarily Walleye rods. I started a program where I get $ from my community and I build rods for kids at no cost to them or parents. Have a young man that wants a Northern Pike rod 7'6" Medium heavy with micro guides. Do I need to run double footed guides all the way to tip? or can I do 3 double footed guides tapering down to micros #6 running guides? He gets to go

I'm in the process of putting together a material list for 2 walleye trolling rods. I'm a little confused on what size and spacing I should be using. The blanks are 2pc MH moderates. I'm considering dbl foot guides for the first 3 guides sz10, 8, and 6 then sz 6 single foot runners (9-10 total guides) or would I be better starting with sz 12 and scaling down? Would sz8 or 7runners be better?

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has built an 808 NEO casting rod and if so, how many guides, their size and their placement that you used.. I am in the middle of 2 line static testing and it is driving me crazy. I have seemingly way to many guides and I still can't keep the line from dropping below the blank. Is that something I am going to have to live with or has someone successfully figu

Last weekend was working on a split grip casting rod using some CFX carbon fiber grips. The butt of the blank was pretty good size so when reaming ended up getting into the carbon "skin". However, the inner foam reamed much easier and, before I knew it, when fitting grip I ended up scratching the blank because the carbon skin wasn't as big as the foam inner core. My primary question

I've built several spinning rods & I'm getting ready to build my first casting rod. I've used the KR guides for my spinning rods & they have a nifty little calculator to help choose your guides & guide sizes. Is there anything like that for casting rods or is there some kind of chart that can help me choose the right guides? Thanks, Tony

A friend is an alligator hunting guide here in Georgia and he uses an 8' XXH ABU Garcia Veritas casting rod w/ 100# braid to snag and fight them in to the boat. I have been given the task to repair the rod for him, and I want to replace all the guides. Using a standard wrap with all double foot guides on top, what guides would you recommend me look at? I am not real sure what guides are on the

I stripped an old Fenwick 6'-6" rod. I checked the spline. I was surprised to find the spline was off by almost 90° . Back in 1998 this was an expensive rod. I thought Fenwick was a good rod. I can't believe Fenwick skipped setting the spline.

Mike, Thanks and congratulations on a very good article “Single Foots for HD Use” in RM magazine. I found it both enjoyable and enlightening, if not surprising. There are a few questions I would like to discuss with you but your email is hidden on this forum. If you would be so kind as to email me, it would be appreciated.

Hey guys so I’m building my first boat rod and need some tips or guidance on components. I’ve build some spinning rods, casting and fly rods but these boat rods have me stumped as far as guides and spacing and the grips and reel seats(pretty much everything). I’m fairly new and trying to branch out and learn some new things. I’m building on the MHX GFC84M it’s a 7’ 20-40lbs line. Thank you so muc

Hey folks. I have a pile of blanks that I bought at Dale Clemens going out of business sale. I’ve built quite a few rods from the blanks in that lot. However, I have some blanks that I’m not sure about. I’m hoping some of you can help out? The one on most curious about is a Lamiglas PSB 114 2 M. The butt is .820 and a size 8 tip. The other ones only have numbers written on them, no manufactur

Hey guys, I've been building fly rods for a while and now I'm looking to build a couple conventional rods for SoCal local species. 8ft, 20-40lb, general purpose rods while I sort out what kind of arsenal I want to build. I'm looking at all the fuji alconite offerings and my head is spinning. KW, LKW, MN, HN. I was thinking MNs as I don't need the heaviest duty stuff, but any input you have rega
