I'm going to build a bait finesse rod for stream trout just because curiosity is killing me. I plan to use an NFC 601 (IM) or an NFC 602 (Delta) paired with a KastKing BFS Zepher reel and PowerPro 3 LBS braid. Would like to be able to throw 1/32 oz jigs. I have a Fuji rv6 I can use for a stripper and minima 5's or 4's for running guides. I am thinking about a simple spiral. Can I use single foo

Greetings. I am looking for help with choosing guides for a rebuild project.. The rod was built on a Calstar T 120 blank as a spinning rod. It is a 5 ½ ft. freshwater blank. The guy who built it mostly built saltwater rods, and that was how he put this rod together. It has all double foot guides (COF) and underwraps. I'm not criticizing (the guy's threadwork was amazing), but even with my very li

Greetings during the recent NFC Rod Blank Sale I purchased a NFC FW 601-1(IM) Blank and a NFC 1K-IPS3.75-2.0 Soft Touch Grip to go with it. I am using this for Trout Fishing in Small Streams in WI and perch vertical fishing. For trout fishing it will be a light flouro line, and for perch it will be light braid with flouro Leader . So I did find the Anglers Resource for KR Guide Spacing. I

I am building a Rainshadow REVS72UL-2SB blank (7'2" 2 piece ultralight) mostly for trout. I'm going to use a CF TN handle and have a Lew's Mach 2 spinning reel sized 100 I am going to pair with it. I'm looking at Pac Bay guides, and from my understanding the going recommendation is to use the high frame M guides for the reduction train then F fly guides for the running guides. Would going

Hi everyone. This is an amazing forum and a bit intimidating to a new builder. I hope you can forgive the new guy as my questions may seem rudimentary in nature. It's such a great opportunity to seek advice from experts before I buy all the wrong stuff. I will try to keep my questions related to guides and placement. I'm building an ultralight with a size 1000 reel, 6 lbs braid on the NFC FW 661

Hello all, I am in the process of wrapping some ultralight ice rods. I also recently converted to a power wrapper in the DC777. With my CRB hand wrapper, I bought an attachment for the wrapper from Mud Dog rods here in Duluth, MN, which helped somewhat. However this part wouldn't work with the DC777. I had hoped to avoid using a tip top, since the rod tips are orange. Putting a black or

I’ve recently come into a lot of extra time at home and decided to pick up the hobby. I’ve been gathering some equipment and supplies and I’m starting to build a list of components I want to use on my first couple of rods. I took advantage of the NFC sale and got 5 blanks to start on. A SJ 603, 2 MB 663, a MB 733 and a SJ 736. The 603 will be a spinning rod for my 7 year old nephew to build f

Been years since I used anything by Fuji. Since I got back into things a couple years ago I tried Pac Bay minimas and really really liked them. All my rods have been built with them. Was after the least weight and most sensitive rod I could get. The minimas have held up great surprised actually as they look a little fragile. Build I am planning might see some harder use and sensitivity and finess

I did a search but didn’t see much out there. Any thoughts in using crb ssr spinning guides and tip tops? I have used the lzr’s before and was happy with them but see the ssr’s are less expensive. Curious on the quality on both the guides and tip tops? Thanks, Dave

Okay so I'm on to what I believe is the final piece of the puzzle. I have my Rod Blanks selected. Going with the for my jerk bait rod and for my skipping rod I know this doesn't make a difference, but for the jerk bait rod I'm going with a Ohio State/Classic car style the entire rod being Red Metallic with silver metallic thread. For the flipping Rod I'm using my old high school colors of p

Hi. I'm trying to find a particular set of rod guides and was wondering if anyone could help. I'm looking for a set of guides that will be impact resistant. Often AC or SIC guides are embedded in a steel frame, when the steel frame is bumped it transfers the impact to the much harder (and more brittle) AC/SIC resulting in the rings cracking. I have an older fishing rod that has AC guides s

Been using minimas almost exclusively lately. Ul to light builds. Been running size 4 runners. Next build is going to be a ML 7'3". Got everything laid out and ready to start wrapping. Wondering about the runners though. Not very concerned about strength. Will most likely do a locking wrap which I have not been doing. Wondering about the size based on possible uses for the rod. At some point

In a previous thread I was recommended the Seaguide HLG as a alternative to the Pac Bay Minimas that I could not locate. Got the Seaguides today order them from American Rodbuilders Warehouse. Figured I would give my thoughts for others that might consider them. First off shipping was very fast and they have a great easy to use website. As for the guides I still prefer the minimas. Here is why:

Looking for some help finding a specific guide. I am looking for Pac Bay KM4KG08. These are the Minima M Tiblack/Tiblack size 8 guide. Tried all the usual places out of stock. Even Utmost can't get them from Pac Bay. I am not looking to hoard them but I am trying to get a supply built up. Have a need for two for planned builds but am looking for up to six. I have a fair number of the other sizes.

I've read and participated in a few threads where people have wondered what things like the thread for guide wraps, and the finish to cover that thread, actually add to the weight of a rod. So I figured I'd post results for that kind of thing, and some other particulars, on the build I just finished on one of the new RX10 Eternity blanks. The blank is an ETEC72M-SS. It weighed 1.95 oz. I built it

So I have added some UL blanks (3) to my collection. Likely I'll be fishing from shore so casting performance is important. I was thinking a 500 and a 1000 size reel would be the thing to match them with (blanks are all NFC; FW741-2, FW702-2, and FW664-2). But I'm second guessing myself. All I am gaining is weight reduction and maybe I'm sacrificing a lot of casting distance. These days I

I have a 9 ft jig pole that I like the action because of the fantastic way it handles catching a fish but it's a jig pole and I am using it as a casting rod but need more cast length of very light jigs. The jig pole has jig pole line guides. The lowest line guides (butt guides and up) on a spinning rod are much larger than the other guides but on a jig pole, they don’t vary as much in size. I ass

Considering spinning rods, if line-slap on the blank is a negative and “rapid-choke” is a positive, could an appropriately positioned, offset, nonconcentric, seat and grip enhance a (reduction) guide train? Such could move the heavier guides of the reduction train closer to the reel while possibly only needing to add one more lighter running guide further up the blank. Am I inhaling the wrong (po

I am getting back into making rods after having made 3 in the last ten years. Clearly many advancements have been made. Last I knew, Fuji New Concept in Alconite was the way to go. Small, light and more guides for stress distribution is clearly what i am seeing in factory and customs, not too different than in the past. Here is the big question that will surely get ideas tossed around....what

I am deciding between SeaGuide titanium framed spinning guides with their silicon nitride (RSol) ring and Fuji's titanium-framed Torzites (also a silicon nitride ceramic, from what I understand). There is a big difference in price between these guides, even though others who have used both tell me they are very similar in terms of quality. I wonder if they weigh the same? The SeaGuide set is on i

My current build is a Sage Sonic blank in a 7 weight, after building lots of fly and spinning rods over the last 30 years or so i got thinking today, what would stop me from using single leg guides through out the whole rod. Using larger single leg guides for the stripping guides, advantages/disadvantages. thought please. and many thanks in advance Bryan

Hey everyone, have any of you used the LZR guides from mudhole? I’m building a couple of 7ft MHX SJ843 spinners and got the LZRs in 20-12-5s to tip. I’m surprised at how small the 20 is as a stripper. It looks like they might be better for a ngc layout rather than a concept layout. Will they still work or should I go with a 25 or higher frame guides altogether? Thanks for any input Oh, the reel

I plan on making a couple ultralight rods that I will use 8-10 lb braid on, probably either Sufix 832 or Power Pro. My typical UL reduction train is a Fuji 16H, 8H, 5.5M, then down to runners with KBs as needed. I have read in various places that since braid is softer with virtually no line memory, it does not benefit as much from the larger stripper guide. Can I go down to 12H, or 10H? Other par

I have been looking at Microwave guides, and reading reviews. Lots of people think highly of them. Can anyone point me to data that looks at the casting distance one might get from them vs, for example, a Fuji KR Concept setup? I have been using Fujis for years and have been pleased. Always happy to try something new if there is good reason to do it. One reason I hesitate is that the running guid

Hi there, So far I've built several spinning rods, all using Minima M and F guides, using the 27x or KR concept. I've always considered trying Fuji K guides but kept going back to Minimas because I had them on hand and the price. I have to order guides anyway, and decided to spend the extra few dollars on Fuji guides for this build, but then I started wondering if they were actually better

Ok overthinking things again. Looking for opinions. Building on a NFC FW 461-1. Four foot six UL Moderate action. Not concerned with reduction train. Going somewhat unconventional with just two reduction guides but it works. As for runners I am running five Pacbay minima f size 4. So total of seven guides. Static load looks perfect. If I drop down to just four runners I can get to "that's pr

Hi all, I have a new fly rod build in the works and I'm looking for a little input on guide selection. I purchased a CTS Affinity X 11' #3/2 nymphing blank and I'm looking to use Silicon Nitride single foot guides instead of traditional snake guides or wire single foot guides. These guides are the very small "micro" type guides which I think should work well with the small dia

Hey all, I’m going to build a mhx sj 842 spinner and was looking for thoughts on what guides to use. I want to stay as light as I can without using $35 titanium guides. What are the lightest cost effective guides for this? Will be used with 12lb braid throwing top waters for stripers and bluefish. Thanks for your help
