I'm building an ice jigging rod and the tiny diameter of the rod blank is much smaller than the hole in the standard size cork ring. I thought about building up the handle area with epoxy finish in thick coats until it was a snug fit with the cork, but this seems like it would take awhile. I also thought about using some skinny masking tape to build up a couple well spaced arbors and really load

Hi, I'm looking for a wholesale source for fiberglass ice fishing blanks, from 24-40" long, with medium to heavy, fast actions. Color doesn't really matter.

Hi all, I have someone who wants me to build them a 4 to 4.5' fly rod. I haven't been able to find any blanks that size. I was wonder if anyone has ever built one that small and if so how did you do it. Some ideas I had were to use an 1 piece ultralite spinning blank and cut it to size. Or to take a 9' fly blank and only use to tip. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks. Joe

I am looking at making a couple ice fishing rods as gifts. There is not any room to write a name on the blank. Does anyone know of another way to personalize a rod on the handle or other place. Also what would a person use for a handle and blank for a ice rod?

I own a small rod and reel repair shop in Kenora, ON., Canada. Can anyone advise me where I can purchase oversize tip tops for ice rods. I need 16 or 20mm rings in sized 6-9 including half sizes. I have tried in Canada with limited sucess. The larger tip top stops the top eye from freezing in cold temperatures when reeling up, especially when jigging at different depths. Also when people

St. Croix Ice rods have a single foot spin type guide. Very narrow foot and frame to easily fit on thin blank. Black frame with what looks like a thin silver metal insert ring. I would like to find where to buy these guides and switch my future ice rod builds over to this style of guide. Any help would be appreciated. Is it spring yet???????? Buzz

in a previous post i talked about a new skill making spigot ferrules. my first attept with a single piece rod that i converted to two piece. i had a three piece lamiglas 3wt (actually a two wt) and i have just converted it to six piece using spigot ferrules. have not cast it yet but the action has not changed although it feels somewhat stiffer. i guess since lami makes this same rod in a six pi

I'm looking for the empty spools that a person would have after filling their reel with new line. The sizes that I'm particulary looking for are the 50ft and 100 ft spools. Anyone have them left please email me.

I'll jump on the ThreadMaster Finish bandwagon as well. After seeing all the testimonials...I bypassed a "test wrap" and just went ahead and slapped it on a 10 ft light surf rod with Titanium TSVSG's, TLVSG's, andTSG's (not cheap)..lots of time on the split cork handle and reel seet insert....so it better not %#&@!!! To say it has exceptional levelling qualitys is an understatem

Hello all. I am about to build my first fly rod. Most say to try a fly rod first before buying it so you can see how it casts and if it suits your personal taste. That makes sense to me but I also noticed that several of the sponsors here offer various complete kits. The only problem is I am not familiar with their products although some give some basis for comparison (e.g. Hook and Hackle's IM

I have someone who asked me to replace the tip on their fishing rod for them since the ring fell out. No problem, right? This is a friend of mine and I told him how to remove the tip and mail it to me. When I got the tip in the mail, I sized it and was smaller than the smallest size pegged on my tip sizer... 3.5... so my estimate is that it is 3/64". Also, the ring size is really small.. lik

Ok fellas, im a Florida native so that should tell you what I know about ice fishing and the equipment. I want to build a rod for my father inlaw and dont really know what I need. I searched through some catologs and decided on a M/L ST Croix 24" blank. What kind of guides do I use? How many? Placements of them? How are the graphite type buts compared to the solid cork? Which is better to us

Ok, I have been doing some reading, and I understand the "cork issue" as it pertains to a lack of quality cork, the new cork grading scale, etc. Here is my question: I'm building some high end ice fishing rods, and want short grips (4-5 inches in length). The blanks I have are 1/8" diameter at the bottom - so I'm looking to buy cork with a 1/8" diameter hole. Only stuff

I'm looking for a source of little rod tips - about a size 2.5 or so. I know Jann's Netcraft has size 2.0 microlite tops, but they are not quite what I'm looking for. The smalllest fly rod tops I can find are a 3.5. I like to build custom ice fishing rods, and most of the solid carbon graphite ice blanks have small tips - 2-2.5-3.0, etc. Does anybody have a source or any ideas for me? Thank

My first post got deleted - I did not adhere to the forum rules - sorry Tom! Ok, I just completed my first rod - 7' ML action spinning rod built on a St. Croix blank. Needless to say I'm addicted to this fantastic hobby, even after only one rod. I found a LOT of things to improve on for my next rod - but my main problem is that I ended up with bubbles in my guide wrap finish, and I didn't not

I had great luck finding a deal on on fly rods for my groomsmen here about a year ago. I need two affordable ($40 range) 7 foot pike rod kits for my future uncle and cousin-in-laws (uncle is marrying us and cousin is carrying the ring). The father son combo fish pike in Montana (where the pike are as big as the ring-bearer-to-be). I am interested in some (5 or so) ice fishing jig stick kits

I am looking for a supplier of an ice fishing reel.. It attaches to the rear grip by means of a plactic nut over a split ring. ( the nut tightens and the ring squeezes against the grip) the hole for the grip is 3/4", the reel is made of plastic, but I hear that there are metal models out there. The fishing line goes thru the rod blank.. at the end of the rod is a "spring bobber" I

I'm just curious as a novice how the experienced builders on this site weigh in on Hi build epoxy versus multiple coats of the lite epoxy when doing guide wraps. Obviously mulitple coats of the lite is a more time consuming process, but if time is not a factor, are there any advantages of one over the other, i.e. superior results, less trouble with bubbling, differences in durability, etc.?

I am planning on building myself a rod for walleye fishing. I have been using 6.5 - 7 ft. ultralight spinning rod with 4-6lb line. I have a hard time detecting walleye when they bite. Generally I feel like I'm pulling it lose from a rock or snag when I do catch one. I have heard that if you expose the blank in the handle or reel seat you can improve the sensitivity. Often times we will cat

I have always used 5 minute epoxy when attaching a tip-top on the few rods that I have made. But was wondering if I could use U40 instead, since it is already mixed when I am attaching the handle to the blank?
