I'm having some problems with very dry hands this winter and it is giving me fits when working with thread. The thread sticks to the rough dry skin and is creating fuzzies. I'm talking about cracks and bleeding here! We've been installing a new communications network and I've been outside doing antenna work. I am hesitant to use lotions for fear of contaminating the thread. I have some Wor

I now know what problems my northern countrymen experience while trying to epoxy finish rods during the winter. The temperature here in Houston has been hovering 34-38 degrees all day long. The temp in my rod room has been hanging in at 70-75 degrees. Normally the temp in my room is 80 degrees year round. Just that small drop in the temp made the epoxy hard to work with and would not level ou

so I was considering building a #3, and oversizing the guides. not so that I could cast further, but hoping that it would help reduce the number of times that I had to clean my guides from ice during the winter. I was thinking that while I'm still going to get ice in the guides, hopefully I won't have to clean them as often. Is this a stupid idea ? I'm not overly concerned about weigh

I know there are more small rods built than larger saltwater rods and that this is why we have the selection of newer foam arbors in sizes to accomodate the largest user group. I try to use these whenever I can on smaller stuff...they're great. I only wish they came in larger sizes for saltwater reel seat use. Just one or two more sizes up the scale would probably satisfy most every project.

Hi, I have been trying to find an UltraLight spinning rod that measures 4'6 and is two pieces for use on creeks and hiking along small river banks but everyone tells me they are not available. I picked one up years ago and I want to replace it. I am sticking to the 4'6 length as it is ideal for the areas I fish for small trout. I know I can find 5'0 two pieces but I just prefer the shorter

Hello, my name is Rick and I am a new builder in Harrisburg PA. I have built 2 rods already and am looking forward to the future, but am having a hard time finding what I need, as it has a specefic application. I want an ultra light rod, the shorter the better, which has the ability to break down into sections less that 20 inches long. I have not been able to find any blanks that fit the descrip

I visited the St Croix rod factory in Park Falls WI today. I've been trying to find a workable substitute for their 2S56LF blank which changed so drastically between last year and now. The new (2006-2007) vintage of the 2S60MLF with the butt sawed off to make it 5' 6" will come really close. If you get a chance it is really worth visiting their retail store attached to the factory. There

I recently ordered some ice fishing blanks, (St. Croix) which are made from solid carbon. I havent had any luck finding winding checks for these. Butt diameter on these blanks are .125 and .155 Does anyone know where i can find these sizes? Or an alternative method to use? Another question, why do they post rod measurements in metric and butt sections in imperial? Is it kind of the comf

I was wondering what type of blank would be good for a kid at the age of 2-6 years. I was thinking a fiberglass so it will handle some abuse. What do you guys think. Also at the 5' mark. Thanks in adevence. Lance

I'm a total newbie to the rod buiding addiction, in fact I am still in the knowledge gathering stage. Now to my question; I have quite a number of butt sections from broken rods. Most are in excellent to new condition, I would like to know how to remove the cork so that it can be reused. I did a search on removing cork, but the results I received were destructive due to the fact the cork was

Its been mentioned a few times in recent posts that a single foot guide can be used as a tip top, and I'm wondering how many have tried this, how does it look, and is it a difficult wrap to do? Intuitively, seems like it would be hard to wrap in the thinnest part of the blank with nothing to hold onto on one side of the guide. BUT, this would solve the problem of matching guide sizes to tip top

Awhile back I volunteered to build a rod for this project with the assistance from various board sponsors. It seemed like a worthy ...overlyworthy cause. I saw a post elsewhere stating that this particular project has fallen toward the wayside. Quite a shame in my eye. I just want to know if the rod I happen to build actually made it to the recipient I was building it for....as the rod was bu

Has anyone ever heard of something like a Flex Ice Guide. I have someone asking for these guides. He said that when his buddy shakes his rod that the guides "come apart" and the ice comes off? That's the description and it has me pretty stumped. Any help that could offered would be appreciated. Thanks Scott

I know this has probably been covered before but I have a Frabil Ice fishing rod that has a larger barrel about 1/4" long that makes the tip and it has a spring that comes out of the end. Does any one have a source for a tip w/spring similar to this? If not can any one point me in a direction of your favorite spring bobber for ice fishing? Thanks Mark

Quick question, do any of you know where I might find a small reel seat for an ice fishing rod. I have used tape to attach the reel in the past, but the new St. Croix ice rods have an "nps" type reel seat that seems to be smaller than a 16mm. Thanks in advance, Aaron Sundberg

Absolutely nothin' uuhhh--Ha, say it again... WAR / Spiderwire, What is it...............? We wade alot and there is nothing worse that cutting your waders on a piece of remnant Braided Stupor Line that mysteriously breaks off up by the spool, then left to trip you up in the river, or foul a lower unit prop seal on a outboard motor. Braids have their specific fishing uses, one is

354. Tops
Hi all, I just acquired a bunch of St.Croix ice fishing blanks. Tip sizes on these are quite small, 2.5 and 3.5. Being that they are for ice fishing i want to get large diameter tops but cant find 2.5 and 3.5 size tubes. Is it possible to just glue on a 4.0 with the hot melt tip top glue? Will the glue take up the space with no problems? Aside from aesthetic appeal? Calvin

What is the general concensus of this board, of the listings on @#$%& (and elsewhere)that offer "name brand" blanks at reduced prices, no warranties, and no logo decals. Are they really what they advertise to be, do blank manufacturers sell their "seconds" (I am assuming that this is what these products must be). Has anyone every purchased one of these no warranty blanks,

I’m about to build a fly rod for steelhead and salmon. This rod will be fished in cold and rainy weather where ice will sometimes form in the guides. Is one style of fly rod guide superior to the others for such conditions?

I have a friend that swears by his Hagen HSC 503 5' MH vertical jigging rods for walleye fishing. I thought it would be a fun project to make one but I can't find a blank that is close to the specs. 5' MH for 4-10 # line, 1/4 - 3/4 oz lures. Any ideas? Thanks, Chuck

Hi, all Just picked up an old fiberglass boat/pier rod that I want to strip and set up for use with a small conventional reel. I thought that a spiral wrap would allow be to hold onto the rod better when I start to doze off, but it's a short blank, maybe 48 inches beyond the handle. Is a spiral wrap practical? Joe
