you can get the gts70l for like a 100 bucks and it will smash any fluke and can handle strippers if your clam chumming. I would possibly go heavier for a live bait rod for bass though. To get a comparable blank in st croix, phenix, lamiglas will flat out cost you more money probably like 50-100 dollars more. G loomis doesnt sell blanks anymore b/c the were bought by shimano and they keep everythi

look at the black hole line of blanks they are supposed to be awesome. other than that you can try OTI, seeker hercules, super seeker and some very expensive japanese made popping blanks that are stupid expensive Carpenter, HOTS and the like. I would think the black hole blanks would be the move i would make if i had to build one. hope that helps

So i hope this will be more brief than past threads. I am painting blanks right now and they are coming out very nice. Except i just got home and one blank i painted, which i wrapped two guides on, is having problems. The paint right next to the the wraps on the left of them is warped looking. It looks like is was pushed. it is about 3 or 4 'waves" like an accordion. very strange indeed. any

Ill give that a shot. I haven't had the rod I've done with burple candy in the sun yet but I can see life through the burple. Meaning that I can see some holographic pearl through the paint. So I think it will look awesome. I used hok clear this time uk35 looks smoother than past attempts. I let the paint flash longer. They said paint should feel sticky but not stringy and then recoat. I have no

Painted another blank today and so far so good. I got three base coats of silver down and one coat of intercoat clear with mica pearl additive. Planning on hitting it with three coats burple candy tomorrow. Then clearing it. Let me just say this that if anyone is reading this and wants tobget started with planting blanks with an hvlp gun please do yourself a favor and follow the advice of Casey

Wow windex huh? Never would have thought that thanks. The orange peel may be coming from orange peel in the basecoat. I think the base coat is going on bumpy because I am shooting to close to blank not giving paint enough time to atomitize and spread out. You WERE right I should have practiced on pipe first. Blanks look ok but with a slightly bumpy scaley finish. When you all spray how much ove

Looked at the rod I thought came out well and it didn't. It has the dreaded orange peel. Now do I have to sand and buff and the re-clear or just sand and clean and re-clear? I have been using denatured alcohol to clean blanks, should I be using that cleaner/degreaser that ppg makes instead?

I shot the hok color Pavo purple over two blanks one was dark and the other I put light gray primer. There was a definite difference as the purple over the light primer looks much brighter. As most of the blanks I get are black I thought I needed primer. Hum gotta try without too good point. I have 1000 grit and red scotch bright pads which I believe are 2000 grit equivalent. I also don't underst

I was just wondering how many coats do you use? I have been doing 1 primer, 2 base and 3 clear coats. Is that too much or too little? at what points are you wet sanding and with what grit? Thanks again so much for all the help!

I should have been more clear I ran into problem with white milky finish using spray max 2k aresol can. After buying clear for the paint gun I get a much better appreciation for just how expensive this stuff is at 20 dollars a can. I think maybe I didn't let it flash long enough between coats. I also got some wrinkling in the paint on one rod not sure what caused that either. But I got one of fou

I actually had that gun- the devibliss starting line touch up. One problem was it operates at 8 cfm. I have a 2.5 horse compressor with a ten gallon tank. I'm not sure i could keep up with the gun. The dude at the auto body supply recommended a brand called astro. Well all this and I was able fix my hf touch up gun the nut that attaches to the needle was loose (and get ready for this) I tightened

Yes that's it exactly! It is a sandy, gritty texture. Hum- I had the spray width turned almost all the way up so its a narrow spray pattern. I also had the knob that controls the amount of paint almost all the way down. That's probably where I goofed.

Thanks again Casey! You have been invaluable thus far. It does not look like orange peel from the pics I have been looking to compare. Most of the car sites are recommending a bigger needle. They say a good painter can use anything which you are and I am not. I am practicing on these cruddy shakari blanks I bought a while back. I would just rather practice on real blanks for taper issue than pipe

Hey Bill thanks for that link. I will look into that further as I have two small kids and can't always turn my compressor on or they wake up. I will look into binks spray guns. I looked at blanks again last night and they need to be sanded lightly and re cleared but not as bad as I thought. I know duplicolor spray was mentioned it is funny that right now I am trying to use there silver base metal

I am using a "jam" gun now it's a harbor frieght mini or detail gun. I have put a lot of miles driving back and forth to harbor freight to return these guns because they all leak paint all over (on gun three or four now). I think your right guys that I am shooting the clear too lean b/c most of the clear ends up on my hand from the leaking gun. If anyone knows of a decent jam gun that s

Wow the saga continues... Now that I have the air compressor, spray guns, Klasskote, house of color paint and other stuff rods still aren't coming out to hot. Was able to spray paint on with a problem but the clear coat looks terrible- grainy not silky smooth like when I used the spraymax. I think that the needle in my harbor frieght gun is too small to shoot the clear well. At .6 I just don't th

Oh sorry. I bought 2 harbor frieght purple touch up guns. Then I bought the starting line by devilbiss touch up gun because the reviews on the hf guns were so terrible. I bought a 1/3 hp 3 gallon compressor to run all these guns which it can't. I don't think this thing could power a toothbrush. The dude told me it would work but I am reading up and no way. Therefore I am going there tomorrow to r

I am having difficulty converting what the compressor manufactures are saying to what the gun wants. For example the hf compressor I'm looking at says 4.6 cfm @ 90psi. I need 8 cfm at 40 psi for the devilbiss gun. I think that's good has a 20 gallon tank. Would you go oilless or oil? Lotta people don't think the oilless last long but I'm a hobbyist not a pro using this maybe once a week if that.

Yeah I got a 65 dollar 1/3 hp with a small tank. I just looked at psi and said yeah I'm good. Boo! I no this is too small but need to replace i was looking at a craftsman 30 gallon but everybody says its junk and a husky 30 gallon which is said to be ok. Only problem is that's 400 bucks! For ok 400 is a lot of money!

Now for the more interesting questions... I bought a hf gun and a starting line that require 8 cfm. I looked at the compressor i bought and it can't come close to keeping up with that. People on auto forums say I need at least a thirty gallon tank... But I'm not painting a car here just maybe three blanks at a time. So what is the smallest compressor I can use for this? Help!!

I have used abalone a bit. I would try and get the tacky mop that Kevin sells. It is like a thousand times easier to work with than than standard veneer. You only boil it in water not in vinagar which is a lot better on your nose. It also bends easier... I have never had any luck with a heat gun for abalone... Ever.. It just cracks and cracks.. You are right to be sceptical of those videos they a

Well I actually primed with a spray can yesterday so no gun experience yet. These blanks are more practice anyway.. If they come out good great if they don't oh well. I have some PVC I could practice with too. If the hok is really hard to use I have no problem getting a different brand if that will help. I have used the spraymax clear in an aresol can I can kinda see what your talking about with

Wow ok.. Thanks for info again. Is there a brand of paint that is user friendly? Maybe ill hold off on the hok paint until I spray a few rods with good success? Btw last night I primed two blanks. I did the quarter turn thing you mentioned walking the length of the rod spraying 12 inches away. Looks good I little run on the first one which ill sand off. Better than last time though. Thanks for
