A clear coat providing more protection and a better look than just paint on the surface are a couple of the reasons cited for their use on most vehicles today.

The "exposed portion" is epoxied as well. Hi-build finishes would only require one or two applications. Color preserver should first be applied if the thread is regular nylon.

A small "test" wrap saturated with water shows what regular nylon will look like with no color preserver after finish is applied.

Here is a general design plan that I just thought of in response to your question. Starting at 6' or less for spinniing rods, make the handle 10" total handle length. Add 2" for every foot increase in rod length up to 10' or more where I would stop at a total handle length of 18". More than 18" just seems cumbersome and in the way to me.

Sorry, I don't. Looks like titanium or chrome frames and rings in the pictures. Contacting St. Croix could probably get the exact model for you.

Try wrapping the ferrule with a bag of crushed ice. It has worked to shrink the parts and allow for them to come apart.

Sounds like an old and possibly solid fiberglass rod. Lay a single edge razor flat on the blank to slice through the tape on one axis and peel it off then clean the residue with alcohol. If it is paint a little heat from a flame or heat gun should soften it for removal with a craft stick. Be careful not to damage the blank with too much heat by not letting it focus on any area for more than an

If you are able to talk with a technician with the manufacturer, they could probably answer your questions pretty well and help you make your choice. It would be the next best thing to having both blanks in your hands for comparison.

The lengths of rod blanks are just one design factor in how the blank will perform. The material(s) and how it(they) is(are) cut and the amount used will be more significant in determining how the actions turn out. Putting your blanks under the same load should tell you something about how they will respond as rods.

A coat of color preserver before the finish coat could prevent bleed through discoloration on bare regular threads.

Many builders put the guides on the straightest axis of the blank. It can be found by putting the blank on a flat surface like a table. The blank will roll to a stable position where the belly of the curve is down and tip is up. The guides go on the bottom for spinning, fly, and spiral after the transition from the top and all on top for conventional casting rods. Doing a "Search" f

I think Sage is suggesting the axis to place guides on with those dots. You could contact them to check. The dots come off easily with alcohol so they probably are not intended to remain permanently on the rod. I would use the "guide alignment method" and wrap the ferrule and disregard the dots if they are not on the straightest axis.

"Ross- Great looking rods! Forgive me if I'm unfamiliar with your style of shore fishing, but are there any differences or special measures to take when casting two-handed with a 6.5" rear grip compared to a grip of longer length? I take it you are still casting with the reel held in the upper position and not down as in tournament casting? In any case I can definitely see how a short

The 9-10 foot shore rods on the right side of this picture have about 7 inch fore grips, down-locking reel seats, and 6.5 inch rear grips. Two handed casts are followed by moving the rod holding hand to the middle of the fore grip where there is a balance point provided by the reel being mounted close to the rear of the rod counter-balancing the weight in front of the rod holding hand position

If you know of a business in your area that sells rod building components you could bring it there. If you know other builders in your area you could show it to them. You could also post a picture of it on the photo page for Rodbuilding.org asking for identification. The outside diameter of the ring in the frame in millimeters will tell you the size.

Cleaning the thread work without loosening and having it come apart might be difficult. If it was regular thread originally, it should probably be coated with another coat of color preserver to prevent discoloration when it gets recoated with thread finish.

Try holding the thread to the blank preventing the first crossover of the tag end from spinning by maintaining pressure on the first wraps with the end of your thumb as you turn the blank with your other hand. After four or five revolutions the tag end is secured and the thread won't spin anymore..

Tape a scrap blank section that will fit your finishing motor chuck to the pistol grip handle. This will work for odd or large shaped handles and even tip sections.
