Heya Gabe, If that was the case and you did use the CRB kit, I would go with what you implied earlier about your mixing of that epoxy. Its stands to reason that it may have been a faulty mixing error. It happens when your in the middle of things and you say to your self: was that even on the hardener and the epoxy ? When I do it.... I just throw it out and start a new batch... LOL I cant take

Hm, I marble extensively and your problem has never come up in my experimentation's, in fact to this day all the rods I have built have had at least 100 plus hours in the sun and in use and no yellowing to date. I would start by looking at your products used. I haven't tried Thread master finish as of yet, I am satisfied with flex-coat products for my marbling. There are many finish coat produ

I really see no difficulty in this question at all in my opinion. The answer is rather simple..... Tom K hit the center on it however. Custom is defined to the "One" the tool is made for! Not the "Many" I would go as far to say anything outside of that would perhaps be in the production definition or even go further to say its a unique production line ! One of a kind is what I

Hm, I have used the spring-to-spool, spring-clamp-on thread and I did not like any of them! To much variable tension problems for me. I bought the @#$%& tension tray for my CPW and my issues went away immediately. There kinda spendy but the idea is sound in my opinion. Tom K made a good point in when the spool gets low you will be wanting to check for tension at some point. With these magnet type

Funny you asked this question, I did the same thing as Bryce A. It was for a charity event to help raise money for a family in dire need after a death in the family. It even had some G. Loomis family there and a personally autographed rod he denoted for the event. It was my first Salmon/Steelhead build and it @#$%& for $300.00. It was my first Rod and first sell in a way. It helped with advertise

Hm, That is a very interesting read, and since I had a chat with a Wright & McGill representative at last years Portland's Sports Expos convention he had some interesting things to say that correlate with that article you posted. I beleive this new resin for rod industry is already out there and in use by certain hand picked companies already or at least the ones who could afford to get

Hello John, I was hoping there was another with some insight on this, and you are most correct in your assessment. The Blanks I build are salmon/steelhead and I have never done a blank in that diameter size. I also agree with coverage issues at that stage with the Hobby Airbrush as you call it and that's what it is in fact. It was cost effective (cheap) for testing purposes and if I destroyed

Bill your full of questions today! I agree with you and I see nothing wrong with the use of automotive clears or other paints in that part of the industry in use of getting that finish you so desire. Me coming from that industry my self so many years ago, I considered the use of it my self. But a few things I felt were concerns for me when I began this adventure in rod building. To me automot

No Bill, In fact the Jar is the secrete to that inquiry. Remember in the write up the Airbrush must be one used with a (Jar) this keeps it from catalyzing with moisture from the air. Hence why I included keeping a lid on things. I know what you mean though its got a very short pot life and flash point which makes it kinda tricky for the more meticulous and patient in mind. This was another rea

Hello Bill, No I did not, in fact the ones I did try were just to darned hot and some did not mix well and stayed separated for to long for my taste which told me it was not compatible at all. Those I didn't even try to test shoot even. Not worth the gun cleaning chore! Sorry Bill! Is there reason your wanting to slow it down? If you did you could run into adhesion problems and curing issues.

Hello Casey, Those are good questions I hope I can answer them to satisfaction. When I approached this project it was more like a disappointment that got me started. I was dissatisfied with the outcome of my attempts to duplicate a finish comparable to our mass producing counterparts. I was using what was available and cost effective to the craft to get my results, Perma Gloss being one of tho

Hello David, Well depending on the kind of painter you are there is some things to consider: Distance, speed, fan control (atomization)from the gun. This can have numerous variables from the end user and the choice of tools and conditions. I thought of machine turning my blanks and opted against it because of those aspects. I turn by hand and rest the tip only on a plastic piece. The other end

Well Kurt, I do as well work in my living room and I understand the Boss! I have posted some pics of this application method in process to show you as to how little you will need make this application method work for you. Yes you are correct in those pictures, I am shooting color for that blank. You can use pigments in the mix as well, and the green rod with the lettering was the final product

Well, This will be a follow up from a earlier post on the question about if you could spray Perma Gloss with success and have the desired results a builder would be looking for in their finish. I have decided to share this with everyone here on rodbuilding.org. To all of you who are searching for a way to get a finish that would be in comparison to our mas producing counter parts, and for thos

Hello Casey, To answer your question, I don't have those tools any-longer and the access to a adequate shop to handle over spray and the chemical hazards that go with automotive paints. They are very volatile to the nervous system VOC is extremely dangerous not to mention the expense in guns, air system, filtration and many other aspects that are not cost effective in painting a blank. For som

Well ... You Asked ! I was wondering when some one was going to ask this question. This may be long winded. I Have developed a application process using PG in a spray process. I have tested this extensively and I now use it on all my rod applications. In fact the pictures of all the rods on my site are done with this application process. When I did my first two builds I used PG for my finish a

Very nice write up Joe V. I like the concept thinking and it fits my own personal building concepts of static and guide placement. Its worked for me on all of my builds thus far. To me using this concept, builds the right rod for the User in mind and what he intends to catch with that build. Its all about picking one that works best for you and using it to build for your customers. You can always

Hm, I was researching the Microwave guides and looking for a video I have seen in some previous research. I came across a new reel design that folks might be interested in for the spinning builds of the future like anything I do not promote this site and I certainly don't endorse it. But I do think this has some application, science and concepts that could be applied to make a great spinning r

Well ... I have built 3 of them for customers, the MHX1023, HS9000, and the SJ842. Two Salmon/Steelhead builds (casting) and one Trout build (spinning). All were very nice to build and easy to prep for applications. As for performance, all my customers called me on the phone form there favorite fishing spots and raved about how well the rods performed. I started using these when I first seen t

Heya Lorenzo, About 4 months ago I was building a spinning rod, and I researched a bit into guide selection and how I could get the least resistance (line-slap) from the spool to the first guide. I found this article in our library its a good read on the principles and concept of spinning guides applied to a build. link below ! This might give you some insight on why the use of this new

To everyone involved in RBO! This is long overdue and I think it’s time for me to give some insight on what RBO and this forum has done for me. I want to tell this story as it all happened in my pursuit in this craft! I think I should begin with a little bit of back ground of who I am. I was raised in a small town along the Columbia River, and my father was an avid hunter/fishermen. I land

Funny stuff, I just found the two I dropped from 5 months ago after doing a clean up of the floor. I spent hours looking for them and then Had to reorder and wait 2 days for delivery. I always order more than I need of the #4s . They can be very elusive when they drop from your eye sight on that journey down to the floor. I have a picture in the gallery of what I use to keep them critters stuck
