Well for my customers its a face to face consultation in the studio. We discuss the rod were going to build and for the intended use of the rod. Inviting the customer into your Studio with a comfy chair for you and your customer is a nice start. I never discuss the money aspect of the build...unless directly asked! Most of my customers are very serious fishermen and are finicky in some aspects.

I have found that egg shelling or "orange peel" will occur with U40 PG. I suppose I can share what I know thus far with my spraying process and my experience in my finish application method. Your going to get this eggshell effect in this application method. However you can eliminate most of it and come out with a more than satisfactory finish that is acceptable beyond the foam brush o

Sorry Was sick with the flu for a good while, haven't had a chance to do much of anything of late. To answer your question here. Like anything we use for an industry or hobby or what ever the project maybe. You should always be aware of what chemicals you are using in or around your work space. When using paints and thinners or reducers make sure your reading the labels and using the proper safet

There is also allot of write ups on U40 PG and a few methods on application procedures some builders have come up with on there own. I would suggest reading them as well, do a search here on this forum for those write ups I am sure you will find them a good read. I use the product U40 PG exclusively for my finish and rod repair work. Like you I was searching for that one finish that would be equ

I started my rod building craft buying from Anglers Workshop! They are a great bunch of folks over there and will help you with anything about rod building. You couldn't have picked a better place to do business with in my opinion. Have a great day !

I am surprised no one has looked at Toms Alternative build to the microwave guide HM let pull up that pic here on sec . Here it is I found it to be a very interesting way of doing it, I have yet to convert my trout rod with this concept. Just haven't had the time to do it. But I plan to experiment with this one for sure !

Jim has some good insight there and something I should have mentioned in my post. Don't get to caught up in the donation aspect of promotion your rod business. It can, shall I say, get to be in the "expectational sense" or should I say, a "inclined position on your part" Once or twice for a good cause is great ! Find an event that will work for you and get the word out with a

Very Nice! Put together very well, easy to navigate been waiting for a distributor to put one together for retail sales. Seems like us smaller based builders who don't have the business licenses or the need for one can make purchaser's without the need of that special number. I am sure the pictures for the product line are still rolling out as we speak as I noticed some products did not have pics

Perhaps Tom Kirkman that should be added to the glossary section for future reference. I noticed it wasn't in there or perhaps I missed it ? Just my thoughts on that one!

I knew there was a name for this phenomena "Amine Blush' I have found this on my finish of late because of the conditioner's in the house and the climate control in my studio not so good. Getting up in the morning and inspecting the finish I have found this slight hazy effect over a smooth perfect finish job. Knowing I mixed accordingly and with all my safety procedure's in line there couldn

Hello Brian, I use Flex Coat Light on all of my builds, with no issues at all with cure times. With the exception of winter time and summer time. Humidity seems to be my culprit of getting my results desired. As a general rule of thumb when I mix a batch in very small amounts. I save my cup of left over to let dry with the rod. I use this to check for tackiness and drying conditions of the epo

Another thing you can do for your self is take pics of your work and put together a working port folio. Work up a opening business statement something along the lines on how or why you got started. Time line the folder as you progress. Do promotional work with the costumers you build for! If there willing to do so. Reputation is a big step in the direction to getting your business up and off the

Casey, There are many things that can cause your issue in the sense of prep, location, and materials used. It sounds like you ran into a contamination problem to me. The advise above are great problem solvers to the issue at hand. In my experience with painting your finish room has to have some rules put down that I use in my own finish area. Like silicon based products, this would include car

Just a Question here, I visited Riley Rods site this morning and they seem to have an extensive outline on this procedure and build and they also carry the products to get a novice started up along with detailed written description on how to do it ! No pictures for the procedure write up however so if your looking for that its a no. If your builder-savvy you can pretty much figure this one out on

I agree and I have tested the possibilities at least with the most general buffing compounds .....specificly with Maguires products. I use Flex coat light build and did some testing my self, I have found that the final polish is not compatible with the surface of the flex coat or its still to green as we would say in painters terms. I think it has something to do with the flex additive they have

All good advice ....I just thought of something I have been experimenting with not sure if any have mentioned it before!....The ladies have a unique tool for putting on there faces .....To me I have named it the "rod dust buster" and they come in many sizes at the girly store. It works wonders for me before a final prep and shoot or even wrapping to get unwanted particles from the area

Well, I am just a Custom Rod Builder who takes allot of time to listen to his own customers and even listen to my suppliers issues and needs. Bill S. brought up some good points from a business stand point. In my experience of some of his questions I would like to comment on some of those. Perhaps give a perspective of how one might be looking at this from out side his box and others. First is

Well, Personally my biggest problem with blank selection today is the fact that there is no standard to the system. One action or power is different to another in the industry. Without actually having the blank present, it's virtually impossible to to tell what you have until you have purchased the blank. If you have built it before then of course you already know what you have. After reading

I was hoping for a question like this to come along! Doing a spot repair on a rod can be tricky especially if its in an area with just more than finish on the rod. I have done a few with more than adequate results. Matching things up is the tricky part. Your going to have to have a good finish procedure in place before attempting a repair. It needs to be compatible with whats on the rod already.

Ed, Another source I have been looking into is the ladies with there own (Make up) making supply. They have a product line of powders with many purities, bases and colors. I am also a marbling artist and have been looking for alternative powder pigments outside the fishing industry. I think I have found the source of powders I am looking for. Unfortunately I am in the middle of 6 builds on the

Interesting thread here! I Have use several kinds of threads for my builds FishHwk, PBay, Mederian, and a few others as far as I am concerned in my use they were all fine to work with. My issue was the use of (CP) on my wraps all the time and this was one animal I was not wanting to deal with because of its nature of causing unwanted effects with finish applications. Mostly compatibility issues f
