Yes I am waiting for Tom K. to post a direct link to a photo line up the critter because I just went through allot pics of the expo (with great enjoyment ) but did not see this new device ! The pics look great and it looks like everyone there had some kind of interest in what they were looking at! I couldn't see an idle looking attendee in those pics! LOL Must have been the best show ever to date

I was waiting for some trick or something LOL! I thought to my self < > Man I know when I first got on this forum and searched almost everything I could possibly imagine I would need for building a fishing rod. I never come across this so called machine or critter! HOW EVER > I did read about a home made device to help with keeping the guides aligned and getting them straight to the b

Russell, The question you asked has many variables, for my answer (as above) with others. I build a specific line of rods for the area I am located in which is the lower Columbia River. Salmon/Steelhead/Sturgeon rods are the specific line of rods I build. Mostly Salmon rods for boat fishermen. The reason I mentioned this, is because it dictates the components and blanks in specific I use that

I am surprised that no one has tried my application process I posted about six months ago on PG finish application. I still use this process to this day and I have Field tested my work extensively as well. The finish is holding and still vibrant to this day. Its also a great method for cosmetic repair for most general rod repairs I am doing. I will post the link here again if anyone is interested

You might try this if your looking for that finish you can compare to the mass producing folks out there. Not sure if anyone else has given it a try since I last posted this procedure last year. Here is the link with follow up questions answered. Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask ! have a great day !

I am not one for posting in a rant thread, but Roger W. Hit the one nail that is sound and true to the core. I don't think for a moment that the rod building industry is no different from other industries out there. Mass low cost production has always been the pit fall of any of the smaller counterparts. This is were we have to think outside the box to compete and do it better than those mass pro

Hey Lorenzo, Read your post, There could be another possibility of contamination from your hands or fingers. I wash my hands before I begin wrapping and try not to touch the wraps with my fingers after-words. I would happen to be in the kitchen for something and not think about were my hands have been and sit back down to finish a wrap! Since this is the first time its happened and I have seen

I use the dremel tool (With a Diamond cutting Wheel) approach! after using most of the above mentioned procedures here. I found it less time consuming and cost-effective since I do not have room for a band saw and the Dremel seems to cover a wide variety of makeshift tooling for the job at hand ! Have fun and make sure to wear EYE Protection when you cut things with that Wheel. I have seen to ma

Interesting topic, When I am ready for the cut on my thread to finish my wrap, I look for that POP! LOL. It tells me my thread is wrapping at the tension I desire. To me its the only way of knowing there was tension behind my wrap to the end of my wrap, if I don't get that little POP! Then I stop to consider if my tensioner was working properly. I suppose its just one way for me knowing there

Ah! I see, I have been educated then. I thot I had used a (no no) word of some kind. The tension device I mentioned is sold by Anglers Workshop they are magnetic ones and they also Intergrated this type into a thread tray that will accommodate them as well. I have one my self and it solved many problems I was having at the time. I was unaware of the system you use could actually dictate speci

Tom K is correct! I have had no malfunctions or difficulty with them.....low maintenance and belt drives have not worn as I thought they would with the punishment I have put it through. In fact I haven't even had to touch this machine for repairs since it came out of the box now that I think about it. The thread carriage is a tight fit with bearing rollers and slide seamlessly for me. The rod sup

Yes they make the machine ! Its a quality built devise ! I own one and I can say it dose it all ! Ask for Rick at AnglersWorkshop hes my (go to) guy for everything there! I would also recommend getting the @#$%& Thread tension device for an upgrade as to there standard Thread tray device....it will save you the trouble down the road with frayed thread especially with metallic threads...works well

Strange, I use Flex-coat exclusively on my builds and Field tested 6 rods for a complete year of Salmon fishing here on the Columbia river. I have inspect all of them for stress and yellowing and finish failure, none of the rods had any failure and on average about 20 Salmon caught on each of those rods. I also waited until the season was over and rods were stored for the winter in various con

This is a good question to ask the Veteran builders! I have often pondered the thought of buying an in house stock of blanks to keep on hand for customers. I can see already with some of the posts so far this is going to vary from builder to builder! I would like to think there are many aspects or reasons to consider in ones pre- stock in materials or just blanks in mind for this one. To ans

Well LOL I suppose I did find it in my issue of Rodmaker and now I remember reading it ...funny how you tuck things away to be sure you can get to it for future inquiry, I put away and it was really put away LOL Thanks for the quick response and yes they are much older rods two are 20 years old and I like to do my home work before I dig into such things. Better to be prepared than surprised !

Happy Holidays to all! I am not sure were If I read it on here or in someones own personal forums, but I am having malfunction in the memory marbles I guess. Perhaps Tom Kirkman can shed some light on it? On the ferrule alignment procedure, it was very informative and it looked very easy to do ! For the life of me I thot this was in our Library and I went back for some brush up information an

Sounds Good its forgotten already! I meant no disrespect as well. I agree with your procedure , and like many others out there will too. I spent allot of time removing orange peel, and the dreaded runs for painters who couldn't lay down there clear so well and instead of a redo they would send them to me and say (Rick can fix it ) and well I got really good at it and you understand how painters a

I am not here to waste my time in typing all that stuff up out of thin air! I am doing it and I have plenty of customer rods finished and on the work bench to do! No skin off my back if you cant handle the information sir ! Good day!

I suppose I should touch a bit more on wet sand...Wich I have done plenty of in my time in the automotive industry. Wet sanding can be messy and in general for those who have done allot of this know the ins and outs for techniques. Most wet sanding is done by hand and if your in the industry they have special jitterbugs that are only available to the big boys Toyota and many others that can machi

I guess I can add a few more tips to Mikes H. Process of removing finish from the blank. I also use the razor to remove old finish and epoxy. This may seem to aggressive for most, but it is very effective and conservative in removing all the finish and epoxy from the blanks on my bench. I think this should be mentioned how ever...It is not for the weak and non dexterous folks here. You can make s
