I am working on a 13' spey, and I used the preformed spey handles made by Pac Bay. They balance the rod nicely (Pflueger Trion7/8 & Windcutter Spey Line). I inverted A8 seat, so now it downlocks. This helped with balancing to this reel.
If you needed a longer foregrip, you could glue rubberized or burl cork rings to either end and turn(sand) them down. It would add ~1.5".

For that color blank, I like Blue Dun. With and w/o cp.
Without CP it blends nicely with the blank.
With CP, add NCP white or any gold or yellow as the trim bands.

JC,
I dont think you'd ever come across a blank which is ABSOLUTELY straight.
If you wrap on the spine, the worst thing that can happen is if you sight down the rod....you will notice the curve.

I would guess there was some contaminate on the first coat of epoxy, on your brush, or in your mixing cup.
If it were me, I'd take some 300grit paper, lightly sand down the whole guide, clean with denatured alcohol, and apply a thin third layer.

Yeah. That blank was my first thought. I really think that blank would be too fast, heavy, tiring.
Something more along the lines of a full flex float tube stick that you could throw a 5 wt line with all day long.
11' moderate action, full flex is ideal for this clients application.
the PacBay T2SH1382/2 6-10lb 1/4-1/2oz .500butt and 4.5tip might work
i'd have to cut the butt dow

I cant seem to find any 'fly' blanks over 10'6"
Does anyone know if something like this exists?
i need a blank with med/med+ action and moderate/full flex
what model 'noodle' (spin) rod would fit the bill..or at least come close?
Thanks

I agree with John. No need to start with a #20. I built a SCV10wt and used a 16/12 setup.
#16 and a #12(tamer) in the NIC's, and then a NIF #8(or2), and then 7's on out.
Should be a sweet setup.

I would suggest a Hook & Hackle IM7 8' or 9' 4pc 4wt. Has a nice mod-fast action.
These are great blanks at great prices (~$50).... if you can order one before the weekend!
I just finished a 9' 4pc 6wt, and have a 7'6" 4wt on the way.

44. Re: Hate CP?
I would guess if you are getting blemishes, you have thinned it too much, or it needs to be mixed better.
I use Gudebrod 811 (9 parts 811, 1 part isopropyl alcohol) and have never experienced blemishes if liberally applied and left to dry completely.
I'll use a hair dryer if im in a rush, but usually let it dry overnight.

Jason,
I have my DC 6'10" 1wt wrapped, and ready for finish next month. If the business end of your gear is stuck in the wrong place, you may be in trouble if you're yanking on 3x tippet material with this rod, but most likely you'll break your 6/7x before the blank in danger.
I would agree with Don on the 2wt if your fish frequent 18"+.

I'm with ya brah!
I usually go do something that really frustrates me, and makes me wish I was wrapping rods instead.

I'm building a H&H IM7 7'9" 3wt (glossy green) for a friend.
Its a tight little blank, and definitely can throw heavier flies, but delicate enough for tossing #22's in close.
I have also built the Forecasts in 2,3, and 4wts. Great for the price!

I just finished a 9' 4wt Forecast(dk blue 2005) with single foot alconites as you described.
I used double foot 10 & 8 CLNAG's as the strippers, and CLAG 6's the rest of the way.
Wrapped with Blue Dun (used CP) and white ncp trimbands.

garnet w/o cp. my favorite for the 2003 Forecast TEAL blanks.
Blue dun w cp and white trim bands for the '05 dark blue Forecast blanks.

Guinea plumeage tip sections (dark gray w/ white spots) as a base layer, with an overlay of a Jungle cock nail would fit your color combo.

I just finished a 9' surf rod(concept spacing) and used single foot Fuji Alconites, with a SiC tip top.
With a forhan locking wrap, I can fish with confidence.
The Fuji's are a definite step up in hardness, as well as cosmetically, over hardloys, and the cost isnt that much more, compared to jumping to SiC's.

Make up some sort of fun, signed, 'Certificate of Authenticity and Membership' into the club, to go along with the shirt.
I'm sure there are many here who have the sense of humor to chime in and come up with something brilliant.
It would be a nice thing to pin up in the shop....a talking piece, so to speak.

The previous thread on rods broken while in in the hands of an airline is a real shame. I feel your pain....and discust!
My questions: For all you who travel (fly) frequently with your rods, what is your preferred method of packaging?
I will be leaving for Cabo in 2 weeks and will be taking (checking) my newly finished surf rod. I have been searching for a tube wth a diameter of at least 3

I got one of the White River Classic UL's at basspro.com for $90, and with line it weighs 3oz.
Pretty little reel....still waiting for the season to open to give it a spin.
There are plenty of the Forbes Magnesiums at Overstock.

I prefer to use fiberglass drywall tape to build up the blank under the reel seat.
Just be sure to really work your epoxy into the holes of the tape to get the best bond to the seat.

Yes, Mike is correct. I ordered a 6wt IM7 from H&H, and it came in the PacBay packaging.
Great finish (gloss green) and straight as an arrow!
