There is no difference on which way to go. I don't offset the first guide and get it around in three. That's my method and I'm stickin' to it. Go Hawks.

Not trusting the airlines?? I fly Alaska and you can't take a rod on board except as checked baggage, won't matter if it's 2 feet long in a case. Checked baggage. Thousands of miles in a Bazooka tube......one broken tip and that was my fault in packing..

Or you could look at the Batson SWT series. I take them to Baja. Still have to go as checked baggage but very nice blanks.

Even 220 will work, just use light pressure on the block. You might play it safe and put on a third coat before sanding. Once you start, it's easy to see the highs and lows.

Utmost might have 2 or 3 somewhere in their shop. Pretty sure there was a bag of the plastic do hickeys for those grips.

Two coats, don't thin, leave it alone. You MAY want to go 3 coats and then sand if the ridges from the diamonds are pronounced enough to feel bumpy. Your wrap can come out as smooth as....as.....a babi.......glass if you let it.

If it was good before you busted brush and broken after you busted brush, my guess is you broke it busting brush. With that sort of damage you might have felt it pull, or push on something. Maybe you had the sections joined during your overland trek?

225. Re: Metallic thread
You answered the question. Use a different tension system that doesn't run the thread through metal discs. Magnets, springs both work well.

Gold and black under, wrapped up the blank. Burnish, 2 coats of finish. Black and some other color over, wrapped down the blank. Remove the "other" carefully. That's about as simple as it can be made. Lots of variations of each step are available.

I must be doing it all wrong. I use a mixer so I don't have to worry about a lot of bubbles. I apply at speed, not flinging stuff speed, but good speed. Might just be age but edges seem smoother than when at dryer motor speed.. I use a throw away brush that I clean and reuse, don' t wash my hands before starting, use the same wrapper that I use for cork and EVA. Dip the brush and go, dip and go,

Sounds like you have the thick abalone. Wait till it's set and check it for any "pops" or hard edges. Might be better to get a thin coat of finish on it first to make it easier for your thread to walk up and down.

With D under and A over you will see the pattern regardless of thread type. I'm not sure if the metallic under would show up as metallic if you put regular nylon over, but it would definitly not show as metallic if you used ncp over. Great oppurtunity do a couple of test wraps. A over D is a pronounced pattern, A over C is a better look to my eye..

231. Re: Dec wrap epoxy
Just remember that you will have to sand down and through the "spots". If they are in the first coat, be careful!! Unlike Billy, I can't stand a dimple or wrinkle in a butt wrap finish and will do practically anything to make a glass smooth finish, even to sanding 4 or 5 times. Yes, I went into the thread once...just once. Now I hold my tongue just right and think good thoughts.

232. Re: Grip reaming
The rubber cement trick has been used for years without failure, I've used it for several years without failure, on well used off shore rods. This is a method that works and works well. Like every other step in the brain surgery world of rodbuilding, someone (JT!) came up with a great time and effort saving idea. It works and works well, but don't use it if don't want to.

233. Re: Grip reaming
Why don't you just use the largest ID EVA you can find and install l it using the rubber cement method? Why anyone would ream EVA is beyond me. You simply don't have to.

234. Re: Grip reaming
Seems that the only way that could happen is if you reamed from both ends. The reamers are tapered, can't be smaller in the middle if you run the reamer all the way through from one end to the other.

235. Re: polyneon thread
If you have the polyneon from Madeira, yes. You might want to do some test wraps with and without CP. Lots of nice colors.

236. Re: Smokey Tiger
You need the contrast on the bottom. If you are doing a two thread tiger, go with NCP white or grey and black on the bottom with black over. The grey should turn it a bit smokey. I'd still use CP on the grey or white.

Start in the center and wrap to one end. Do the other side from the center as well. 2 wraps.
