Brad, Yes, I have painted numerous rod blanks with a Paasche air brush. I use the largest tip size with 25-30# of pressure. I use Tamiya acrylic paint, (made for RC Car bodies), and thin it 25% with the Tamiya thinner, (to about the consistency of

Chris, I have built 4 or 5 of the Mudhole HMX MB843-W-MHX. I kept one of myself and my customers all love the blank. I find it a great blank for all around bass fishing. It's a great worm and jig rod. A nice sensitive tip with plenty of back bone to bury the hook and get 'em out of the trash. You would not be disappointed with the HMX MB843-W-MHX.

Chris, I have had a couple of guys bring drop shot rods back to me with the rear reel seats loose. On those rods I had installed the threaded portion of the reel seat in the down position and had reamed the rear grip out to accept the collier covering the reel seat nut. I caused myself several problems with the reel seat installed in this manner: one the rear grip was very thin where reamed to

Sam, I have built numerious RX8 XSB 842's and XSB 843's. The XSB 842 makes a great Senko Rod; but for for finesse jigs and/or deeper water I would go with the RX8 XSB843. It has a better back bone for the deeper water and a little heavier lure weight. Everyone that I have built either of these two rods and raved about them!

John, I just "eye ball" the KB guide and the blank from above and when the KB guide foot does not extend beyond the edge of the blank I switch over to the KB's. I really like the strength of the KB's; but use the KT's, (2-3 of them), in the tip area to keep the weight down in the tip. Obviously, it is necessary to use a lock wrap on both the KT's & the KB's.

John, From my experience the first two or three guides can be the KT Guides, then I switch over to the KB Guides. I let the thickness of the rod blank shown me where to transition from the KT Guides to the KB's. The foot on the KB Guides are wider than the foot on the KT Guides, so the KB Guides would tend to stick out from the edge of the blank where it is thinner. I really like the new KB

David, I have been using the Fuji SK2 Reel Seats every since they came out. My customers love them; but I can not say that I have not had any problems with them. I have had a few come loose after installation. I will share with you what I have found to work in solving the problems with installation: I use an old reel foot to provide the proper spacing as mentioned above. One of the surprise

I had struggled with the same dilemma, especially on the "whippier" rods. Some time back I read an observation on this site by Tom. As best I remember, his observation or comment was: you move a fish with the rod and you take up line slack with the reel. What a common sense observation. I was lost in the forest for the trees! After thinking about his comment, I wondered, in reali

Ridge, I have found a Dremel tool with a 425 Emery Impregnated Disc works great for prepping all guide feet. Easy to use and control, whether it is a large guide or a micro guide.

Scott, You will most likely will need to cover the label with something before appling the epoxy, so the printer ink does not smear. I have used Krylon Crystal Clear or Fixative, (Sp?), with great results. A couple of light coats, allowing about 10-20 minutes before applying the second coat to the label.

Cheng, While I have not built any heavy swim baits rods using the blanks suggested above, I have built numerious magnum swim bait rods using the Rainshadow blanks and my clients have been very please with them. The bigger swim baits, as you probably are aware, can weigh as much 8-9 oz, and not too many blanks are available that will handle this kind of weight. The Batson / Rainshadow blank

Just to add another example of Mudhole's excellent customer service: I had built a MHX -MB843 rod for a customer and friend which was later stepped on by his co-angler and broken. I sent an e-mail to Mudhole explaining that the rod was stepped on and broken. This was obviously not a defect of the blank...just my customer's co-angler! I received the following e-mail back from Bob McKamey at

I have built several of the, (and have one myself), St. Croix SC IV - 4C711HMF for Flipping and Pitching. The blank is 7' - 11" long, Rated for 14 -30 lb test and 1/2 oz. to 2 oz. lures. It is a pleasure to flip / pitch. I love it and so do my customers. You would not be disappointed!

Marc, I agree with your criticism of the short DS hook keepers. I have started using these DS Hook keepers on my last 4 DS Rod builds: I don't think they are made for use as a DS Hook Keeper specifically; but, I like them a lot better, as the weight doesn't drop out of the keeper. I have asked my customers how they like them and they all said they work great!

I once used the end of a plastic yellow disposable brush to mix a batch of epoxy. The epoxy started to dissolve the yellow plastic brush handle and add a yellow tint to the epoxy batch. I caught it before applying to the rod and had to start over. Just a thought...

Marc, I have used these hook keepers on the last four Drop Shot rods I built for customers. I have not had any complaints about them. I prefer them over the standard DS hooker keepers as they hold the drop shot weight much better. I don't think they are being promoted as a DS hook keeper; but they work great for that!
