Tom, I doubt anyone wants to see you loose money out of the ICRBE! I need to get my advance ticket purchase in the mai this week. Last year you said the attendance was about 1500. I found that getting the flytier's out was an improvement. Let us all hope you profit from your efforts! Ed Smith

Mike, My expereice has been that it is very difficult to remove guides under any circumstances! I was afraid that it would take more heat than the blank could take! What I did was, cut the thread with an Exacto knife, and push with much effort to get te guide off. I then had to us 220 grid sandpaper to remove the rest of the thread and diamondite. I then applied a coat of Permagloss to th

Jay, I had one explode on me. It was on a 50+ year old solid fiberglass rod I used as a kid. I always liked it. Since half the guides were missing I decided to rebuild it, In removing the tip with a butane torch, the whole tip exploded on me. (No injurey-but a big bang) Ed Smith

Going back to Mike's subject; I have found that I can use the acrylic pigments with the Diamondiate for marbling. I like Diamondite for marbling better than epoxy. I can get better results useing the orange and blue acrylics with the Diamondite. The biggest problem I have with it is that it is too tuff. Imposible to remove. As for Bill Stevens, Last year in High Point, I gave him an orang

Mike, You provide the coffee-I'll provide the grits. I'll even bring a 24 cup percolator. Mine are not sand! My problem is how to cook that big of a pot of grits! Maybe the Radison will cook country ham and sausage and everyone wil think they are in heaven! I think everyone is getting excited about the ICRBE!!! Ed Smith

"Cash Crop" is the most important thing to bring. Kentucy is much like NC, maybe we can convience the NERDS to take moonshine or pot in exchange for goodies. (Billy V, I'll swap half a gallon of lead free "shine" and a pound of grits for a VisualWeave software disk and your book) Some people will accept plastic. Am looking forward to High Point. I know PG works very well over similar CP's. In fact I always put a coat of PG over the CP (Diamodite, Old Gudebrod 811, American Tackle, etc.) but before I apply the finish. IMO it makes the wrap look better. I talk to Jim Upton about this in High Point last year and I think we both agree. Don't ask us to explain why! Ed Smith

E21 Carrot Sticks. Has anyone seen any of these rods? They claim to use carrot fiber in the rod which is 20% lighter than graphite. They seem to be selling two different lines of rods. One is $150. that uses Al2O3 guides and the other Fuji Alconite at $250. I cannot find these rods as blanks or at a discount. They claim to be using their Scandium (Sc-Element #21) technology. They have been

Thanks folks. I had the problem with a blue piece from Masecraft. This is the first time I have worked with this color. I did find the gouge to give the most satisfactory results after I slowed the lathe down. The one inch chisel was almost impossible. Half inch much better. I think this piece had alot to do with my problems. (Since I had not previously had problems with other Acrylics)

I have been turning wood and acrylics for about two years. Some of which have turned out good. Some not so good (Junk). Over the last two days I have had a piece of acrylic that chiped all over the place. After some thinking, I decided to reduce the speed on my lathe. After numerous modifications, I found that the lowest speed on my lathe gave best results. (~500-670 rpm). I think that

Ken, Today must have been a "jenks" day. I got three guides with trim bands on a seven foot spin. I had thread breaks, unraveling, and everyting else. Thread would not move-you name it- ( I had it). Write today until Wednesday off and have an ejoyable Christmas. You are not the only one. See you in High Point! Ed Smith Flat Rock, NC.

I recently got the Grizzly lathe attachment for my new Grizzly drill press. I have yet to use it, but I do make one observation-I don't think the verticle tool rest rod is stiff enough to take hard wood at 12 inches-maybe 6 inches. It would be fine for mahogahey, cedar, cypress, pine, etc. I'll stick with my 1 HP Craftsman for most applications. With a stiff mandrel the thing might be fine.

Mike, Have you stopped using the fake credit cards that come in "junk" mail. Why waste a good deck of playing cards for something that is free! I cut credit cards down for spatulas all the time for finish. Ed Smith

I got one from All Electronics or Surplus Center. I can't rember which. I put a Router Speed Controler with a petal switch. I slow it down to about 40 rpm to apply finish. Once I get a thin coat I increase the speed. I'll run it up to about 200 rpm to get good leveling. (I have been known to throw finish all over the place) After 2- 5 minutes I put it on a slower motor. I don't have any i

From a chemist perspective, acrylic, ureathane, laytex, etc. are very broad terms. They can reflect many types of polymeric materials. Permaglos is a ureathane alright and it is also a cyanoacryate (a.k.a superglue). My "gut" feeling is that Gudebrod had so much trouble controling the emulsion viscosity etc. and with all this ISO 9000. (Along with the complaints) They gave up the

After reviewing and analyzeing the old Gudebrode 811, CP I have come to the conclusion that this product is emulsived nitrocellulose! ((NC) How they emulsive the NC is a question mark. I think the reason they are changing this product is for manufacturing safety reasons. I think they have been disolving the NC in an alcohol (Probably IPA) Then adding H2O. This is a very difficult to control!

Most paint stripper is methylene chloride. I would not touch a rod with it!!. I also doubt it would remove epoxy. Acetone might be a better choice for epoxy but both acetone and methlyene chloride can damage the resin in the blank. I have found if you want to remove epoxy, sand it off with 220-400 grid sandpaper! If CP was used before the epoxy it can be picked off with a needle. I don't u

Tom, What happen to Acid Rod? Did they back out? NC Wildlife Magazine is excellant!!! While they have little to say about rod building they have alot to say about various types of wildlife from fish, birds, snakes, lizards, turtles, etc. I enjoy my issues as well as my Rodmaker magazine! What happen to Bill Stevens? I hope he is not in the morgue after what Kentucky did to his (now
