Thanks. So I guess the answer is there is no real answer. Thanks Tom for the suggestion. When I saw a rod for sale for cheaper than I could buy the parts it just made me wonder is all. Thanks to all who responded.

Wow! Didn't mean to start a crap storm. Some one asked about components, from what I could tell they were all Batson butts and guides. I would assume the blanks were as well. I get quality of work, designs and artistic abilities. The rods I referenced all look decent. Nothing fancy, basic double wrapped guides and cross wrapped butts. I was just amazed at the price he was asking. Thus my o

154. Custom Rod Pricing
For those of ya'll that have a rod building business, how does one go about setting prices for their rods? Is there a basic formula? Is a number picked out of the air? I ask because I was in a bait and tackle shop the other day and all the rods where customs from local builders in the area. As I was looking at the rods and prices, I was shocked. A bent butt trolling rod for $135. I can't har

If I'm reading correctly, it just on the ends where you wrapped thread. I've had it happen before as well. The thread is to tight on the abalone. This forces the epoxy/glue to seep up through the finish. Take a razor, cut the bubbles and do one more coat and you should be good.

156. Re: guide shape
Not sure what brand they were, but my father in law had a spinning rod built one time that had different shaped guides. Wasn't an oval, more of a round pointed pentagon shape if that makes since. He loved them and said they helped cast further. He cut those guides of several times and had them put on other rods. Personally I don't think they added any casting distance, think it was a mental t

159. Re: Mudhole- REALLY?
Back ordered products are always a pain, and sometimes not finding out until the package is received is frustrating as @#$%&. I use Mudhole a lot and have experienced first hand the frustration of not getting a full order due to a back ordered part. There customer service is first class and each time I call there is a quick resolution. They have a great model for customer service and usually

IF you let the one part dry completely, it should't be a problem. Of course you could always put a heavy coat of the one part one as the second coat and as it cures it will shrink to a more normal finish. I usually lay it on thick! Just to the point of sagging and when it cures it's fine.

Make an aluminum foil "pan" and pour the mixed finish in it. The aluminum will dissipate the heat, extending the pot life. I use to use Flex coat high Build, and did his every time.

Very Cool! I taught a rod building class last fall to some wounded soldiers at Ft. Eustis, Va. The initial group had 8 folks, and 3 dropped due to various reasons. The 5 that stayed got ate up with it. It started off with just a fly rod and was sponsored by Project Healing Waters. When that class ended they kept in contact and they moved to spinners and bait casters. One fella got moved t

I use the same papillo waterproof vinyl and yes they make an ink jet version. Be using it ever since it debuted at the expo 4 or 5 years ago.

I've used the rubber gimbals a lot and they hold up well. I mostly build saltwater rods and they get abused. You won't be disappointed.

I needed to order a few items to complete a build and got distracted while in the midst of ordering. Needless to say I forgot a few things. Logged back in and ordered the rest of the stuff. I got to thinking about it and wondered if I could call and get the orders combined to save some shipping. I called Mudhole and Kip answered. He was very accommodating and was able to find both orders an

Bought both at the expo. Well worth it. The details and tips in both dvd's are second to none, and have really elevated my skills on the dec wraps. Go on and buy them, you will not be disappointed.

Good meeting you Steve. I think if the guy in front of you had ended on time, your crosswrap presentation would have been even better! I think you only had like 35 to 40 minutes instead of the full hour.
Thanks for the one on one with the turkshead tool and taking the time to explain the corded butt wraps. I got both DVD's and have viewed both several times. The amount of details you pac

You have to mark where the guides are going to be, then paint that sections white. Then wrap over the paint twice, so there are two layers of thread. If you do that the color will not change. I use casons crystal clear cp.

I bought the pattern dvd at the expo. That might be the best money I ever spent! Very good explanations and animations. Shows step by step progressions of the patterns. Just a great product ya'll put out!

I fish exclusively saltwater. This time of year we have a speckled trout fishery that is world class. We're fishing a warm water discharge and it's like fish in a barrel at times. For me the longer leader does two things. One, it allows me to be a bit more stealthy, and two, it allows me to keep the lure I'm using in the strike zone longer. In the spring, summer, and fall, I have no problem us

Cause that's the easy way out! LOL I did think about that. I've been fishing those rods for two years and the 18-20 inch leader works well 90% of the time. Its just this time of year where I need it longer. I may build a new rod with 4's or 5's on it for this time of year.

I tried the sebile knot but could not make it bite. It kept slipping on both my 20lb flouro and 12 lb flouro. I'm sure it was me and not the knot. I went back to the uni to uni with 14lb fireline and 12lb flouro. I trimmed it close and the knot passes through the size 4's with no problem, I have a spinning rod with size 3 micros and the same knot joining the same line work on it as well.

Thanks, I watched the sebile knot video and am working on learning it. I use the short leaders now, but would like the ability to have a longer leader for my winter speckled trout fishing. If I find that the sebile knot works for me, I'll come back and report.

Thanks for the replies, I have been using the Batson micros guides. In 3 and 4. I have had to use a "short" leader 18 to 20 inches. I would rather be able to use a 6-8ft leader if I could. I'll try the knots ya'll suggested. Thanks again.

179. micro guide knots
When joining braid to fluoro leaders what knot do ya'll use? I'm trying to find a knot that will pass through size 3 and 4 micro guides on a bait caster set up. I have 20lb power pro going to either 20lb or 14lb fluoro leader. I have been using a uni to uni and even tried a loop to loop but the knot always hangs up in the first guide after the tip. Anyone have a good knot to use for a set up

Hey thanks for the replies. I used CP after redoing the wrap and it worked just as normal. I'm still kinda baffled about the bubbles though, oh well, I learned something new during the process so that was good. Thanks again for the replies
