Tom, so would you use the direct center of the reel just like the "spool shaft" of a spinning reel? Also, should the butt guide fall within the same distance from the reel face as a spinning setup?

So I cant decide on what guides to use for a new centerpin rod. Im up in the air between the Janns Flexlites and the Pacbay Minimas. Anyone out there tried both, and what kind did you like better?

Just wanted to give a heads up to everyone. After noticing that the XMG50 bass rods were removed from the lamiglas webpage, I made a call to them. The XMG bass blanks are going to be discontinued. They said they will continue to do the salmon and steelhead rods, but the bass line will be nomore!

I have a request from a customer for a pair of "salmon spoon rods". I have never done this type of fishing before so Im a bit clueless as far as blanks go. One rod will be a spinning and the other a casting. Line will be 10lb mono and lures will be casting spoons up to 3/4oz. They will be used to fish from piers in lake ontario. Customer requested a 8'6" rod for both. Any

I'm looking to try trolling for steelhead in the rivers mouths come fall. I normally float fish for them later in the season but want to try something new this year. Since I've never done this before I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction as far as blanks go. Baits will probably be rapala 10s and 12s as well as little cleo spoons. I was thinking along the lines of a HS9000

How do you think the two compare as far as sensitivity?

Has anyone built on these yet? I was most interested in the XSW68MX as a jig rod and the XSW72MM to cast shad rap #5s. If they are anything like the RX8 bass line Im sure they are great! I was just looking for some feedback if anyone has used them yet.

I decided to give these a try on my next build. Its going to be a spin rod build on a SJ782. Just had a couple questions... Are the heights of these like the BYAG fuji guides or the LV Fuji Guides? Also, for those that have used them, did you do all the guides in the tangle free, or just the transition guides and use regular SF flys for the running guides? Reel is going to be a quantum size

Looking for a 7' blank for walleye leadcore trolling. I was loking at the Mudhole SPSWB7L or the Gator Glass BS856. Has anyone used either of these blanks for this application?

I have never used one of these but Im thinking about it for the next spinning rod build. From looking at the pictures it looks like the entire rear grip spins to lock down the reel. How do these mount to the blank allowing the rear of the grip to spin? Is it just epoxied to the blank in the front portion of the reel seat?

I was just thinking it might be another option to help eliminate guide pull out issues wheb pulling rods out of lockers. I know most will say just use a locking wrap, but I just hate putting finish on micro guides that have a locking wrap.

Would there be any disadvantage to wrapping a single foot guide on backwards with the point of the foot towards the tip of the rod?

So Alex was right.... I've become obsessed lol. After some more playing around, or i should say, alot of playing around, i found combination of guides that gave me the best average distance. The spacing is pretty close to what I used for the same size all on top test but I replaced the butt guide with a BLNAG 6 and the next guide with a BLAG 5. The average cast was 123.6 ft. Now maybe

Ok so I did the test with a micro spiral.... The setup was using Steve Gardners method, He uses a slighty different guide sizes, but since I dont have those on hand I needed to improvise a bit. Distance from tip BLAG 4 8.1cm BLAG 4 17.4cm BLAG 4 28.6cm BLAG 4 38.7cm BLAG 4 51.5cm BLAG 4 66.4cm BLAG 4 83.9cm BLAG 5 103cm BLNAG 6 125.5cm T

I wouldnt trust my personal casting ability to do such a test and provide accurate results. The rod tested was a crankbait rod and I feel for that application most people are looking for distance. Now if someone would do a test on a flipping/pitching rod at a close distance that would be great information to have. Again, I think the main point is that a rod needs to be built for how the perso

So today I decided to do some test casting on different guide concepts. I wanted to see some numbers for casting distances. The concepts I tested were, Fuji Concept, same size micros on top, and micros with larger butt guide. The blank used was a MHX CB843. It has a 10" rear grip. The reel used was a Daiwa Exceler w/ 17 lb mono. Casting plug was 3/8 oz. Now heres the data... Fu

So it does seem to be that the blank just "doesnt like" that weight... I tied on both 3/16 and 1/4 oz and it was all good. Casts were all between 120 and 125 ft w/ 3/16 oz. I didnt get the chance to try using the same same guides because I dont have a low frame sz 20. I'll be giving the concept a shot on the next build. Thanks again for all the help!

Thanks for the help... Like Tom said, the blank was my next thought. Ill test it out some more today and se what I can come up with. Yeah the blank is 6'6" and the rear grip is 7"

Tom, Are you using the 27X method for setup? Im have trouble getting anything over 100 ft with 1/8 oz weights. I could use the extra bit of distance. Blank is a SJ781, reel is a shimano 1000 using 8lb braid. Reel diameter is 38mm so Ive been trying a size 16 and size 20 butt guide(Pac Bay Minimas) I dont notice much of a difference between the two.

What kind of distances is everyone getting on spinning rods? Looking for numbers using 1/8 oz lure, 6'6" or 7' Spin Jig, 1 power blanks. Mono or braid. Thanks in advance for the info!

I second the Lamiglas blank. I just did one for someone and it turned out great. Very sensitive, you can feel every little bump. He's using it for worms and jigs and said it the best rod he's used for that application. Plus you cant beat the price for a blank of that quality!

Thanks guys! The ones I saw were the ones at Anglers Envy. The jaws grips look a little different, like they have a deeper cut in them. Maybe its just the pic. Ill have to order some and find out.

I was at the show in Highpoint and I remember seeing someone who had EVA foam grips that had a raised textured pattern on them. The were on display being used as a foregrip for heavy offshore rods. I cant for the life of me remember who had them or where they are available from. Any help in finding these would be greatly appreciated.

I second the mudhole e glass blanks... I have built 6 for a local guide/tournament and he loves them. I use the SPSWB7M and he is using them for channels as well as large flatheads and blues. Biggest to date was 65 lbs. I spiral wrap them and it seems to work out great. If your looking for a live bait rod check out the AXLB70M from american tackle. They have a very fast tip and plenty of p

So today I was setting up a spinning rod using the 27 X method and a thought came to me.... When setting the distance for the choker guide do you have the spool all the way out, all the way in, or somewhere in the middle. What Im refering to is, how the spool moves up and down on the reel shaft. Ive setup many spinning rods before and for some reason this thought never crossed my mind. On some
