The stripping guide would not be located by the 27X method. You may be confusing that with the choker guide, which is something altogether different. Angling the seat, which I've tried, usually results in the bail/line roller slamming your fingers as it revolves. .................

No strength will not be an issue with A thread. However, durability might be depending on hard that rod is fished and used. A surf rod is pretty beefy in most cases. Using D thread isn't going to upset your apple cart. .................................

Yes, you really need to read that article. You aren't going to get gold on any clear media. What you've done isn't even close to what the article tells you to do. Seriously, read that article and learn what has to happen in order to obtain white, gold, silver, etc., from a decal. It's all in there and in pretty good detail as well. ..............

Lighter guides will help the blank react and recover more quickly and this will be even more apparent on a longer rod such as yours. If you can go smaller on those running guides, do so. You'll just have to try it. 250 feet plus, isn't bad at all for that lure weight, but you may be able to get a little more by messing around with the guide set up. .................

Depends on what you have and how much of it. The buy/sell/trade page is for builders who need to move the occasional item or items on to other builders. Run what you have by me and I'll see how it fits. ................

Roller guides were there aplenty. In fact, the problem may be that there is too much stuff there. It's hard to find it with the crowd and all the stuff involved. The vendors only have so many on their sales staff and can't manage to do all that we'd like to see them do. Like a restaurant with only so many tables, you can only serve so many people per hour. I do know that there was no natural

I appreciate your kind comments. While I'm happy that during this time of serious economic depression we managed to turn out a record crowd and set a new record sales figure for the vendors, I'm never completely satisfied. The seminars are getting rave reviews but we can still improve them. I have some thinking to do about a number of things before I announce another event date. But if we move f

If the underlying stuff lifts and peels, so will the stuff on top. Just like painting a wall, you have to make sure what you're painting over is in good shape. At any rate, it may give you a few more year's protection for the thread. ............

Vern, I allow rod builders to use their websites in their signatures provided that they do not sell anything other than custom rods. If you sell reels, rods, lines, guided fishing trips, cookies, puppies, etc., then you would not be permitted to do so. Otherwise, the rule above applies. ....................

As a matter of fact, the Volume 11 #6 issue of RodMaker had a detailed, yet easy to follow article, about boring seats and grips on the lathe. It's bit much to cover here without the photos. In short, you chuck the piece in the headstock chuck and bore the piece with a bit held in a tailstock chuck. It's simple, but there are things to learn that keep you from ruining your turned item. .

I have a photo or 2 to put up in a minute regarding the tickets. My guess at the front guess told me by Saturday noon that our numbers were up considerably - one of them said he felt that we'd sold about 300 to 400 more tickets this year than last. He ended up being very close. Darn good guess, but he's been doing this for us for the past 3 years now so he has a good feel for it. .............

17598. Expo Numbers
Ladies and Gentlemen : I want to thank each and every one of you who participated in or attended the 2009 International Custom Rod Building Exposition. We set a new record for attendance this year - 2402 tickets were sold over 2 days. This year, we sold single 2-day tickets, so there were no duplicates - we know for a fact that 2402 individual paying customers were at the event. Another couple

Kevin Knox is taking a shot at turning his abalone work into a bit of a small business. Those of you who sat in on his seminar this past weekend at the Expo or read his article in RodMaker no doubt have the urge to try it yourself. To that end, Kevin has set up a website and joined us as a sponsor. It will be next week before I have time to add his link to the sponsor list so in the meantime y

The article in Volume 9 #1 RodMaker would likely help perfect your finishing technique. I've even had epoxy formulators and supplies thank me for writing and publishing it - they say they refer customers to it quite often. In the meantime, I'd add something to what these folks above have said - try not to mess with your finish too much. Put it on and leave it alone. If you constantly poke and

Sean, Because the seminars are also listed in the magazine and on the website, I figured that anyone that wanted a carry along copy could or would have just made a copy from one of those sources before arriving at the Expo. But your point is well taken. If we can afford to do it (wouldn't be very much but we already run very close to actual cost on the event) we will. I'll certainly conside

17604. Big Mistake
While I was preparing the article on the "Electric Decals" for the last issue of RodMaker, Bill Stevens and Lance Dupree were excited enough about the process to contact the media supplier and arrange to put together a special "sample pack" of all 4 media types for those wanting to try the technique without having to invest a fortune in full packs of each specific media type.
