You can't high stick a rod unless you take the butt past 90 degrees to the fish and doing so buys you nothing in terms of lifting power or distance. The weight rating you see there isn't for casting - it's the size plug recommended for "Hot Shotting." You'd never cast that much with most Hot Shot rods. Most Hot Shot rods are indeed very fast action, with limber (but not necessari

It's not hype - but the companies making the prepeg and the guys making the blanks are well aware of what's available. This isn't a revelation to them. ..........

Not every fiber or resin system is suitable for making rod blanks. The top makers here in the U.S. are all working with the state of the art in materials and resins today. It's not like this is news to them. ............

Line which has no tension on it is going to slap or touch the rod between the reel and the butt guide. Just about anything you do to reign that sort of thing in will ultimately hurt you on casting and retrieving. Since most casts are retrieved with either a fish or the tension of the lure or bait on the end, reeling in slack line shouldn't be a common occurance. It's not really anything to wor

I can no longer keep up with all the various designations from all the various companies. Sorry. Just browse the catalogs or websites and select the type guide needed. Low frame guides aren't as subject to damage as higher frame guides. Thus even the fly type single foots end up being pretty solid on most rods. If in doubt, use a low frame casting guide with double feet. ............

I would use higher frame guides for the butt and transition guides. For the choker and running guides you can use low frame single foot or low frame double foot casting guides. If you're not going to pass shock leader knots, you may well be able to get by with size 8 for your smallest sized guides. ...................

I'm afraid there is no such thing. Your average above of 6'10" is indeed an average, but almost nobody fishes with a rod of that length outside of a few small stream guys who might fish 6' or 7' light line rods. In order to have a true average, or the most popular length sold, you'd need more than just the available lengths - you'd have to know how many of each length is sold. .......

You won't need more than 3 guide sizes for that rod. Just 4 at the very most, but I suspect 3 may be enough. ..............

RodBond was designed by a rod builder and was intended for approximate mixing portions. Always try to get the two portions as close in size as possible, but realize that even a 60/40 mix ration will still set and cure just fine. The designer understood the problems associated with trying to easily measure a gel or paste and formulated it so that a slightly uneven mix wouldn't present any problems

If you're going to try and figure an average length or line weight from the avaiable models on the market, you're going to come up with a rod that is not very good at anything. Like any other type fishing, you need to target the fish and water you intend to use the rod for. ...................

Depends on what you plan to do with the rod. The length needed for lifting large, powerful fish is not going to be the same length needed for making long casts to spooky fish in shallow, clear water even if the line weight is the same. Your question is extremely vague and I think you might want to research fly fishing in general just a bit more before you get too deep in this thing about avera

A wrap that starts crooked, is going to end up crooked. You need to pay particular attention to your alignment marks and after you lay the first 3 or 4 strands of thread, spend a few moments checking the straightness with a straightedge. At that point, you aren't so far along that you can't move the centers to one side or the other. Get the wrap straight at that point and you're on your way to a

When you apply color preserver, you only want to uniformly wet the threads. Yes, you need to soak them, but not so much that you have liquid running and pooling on the wrap. Adding more to what you have now isn't going to help matters. If the CP lump isn't too bad, I'd go ahead with finishing it. But finish rarely hides flaws - it tends to magnify them. ............

Have you considered making your own? With a file or belt sander, the triangular shape is easy to make. Finger grooves can be cut with a round file or reamer. It might take you a little more time, but you'll end up with exactly what you want and something that no one else has or can get. ............

14636. Free Blank
I did this for the Expo slideshow project so I'll do it for the Expo rod display as well. Everyone that brings a rod for the display case in the Showplace Atrium will be entered to win a free St. Croix SCIV rod blank. I'll have at least 1 to give away, perhaps 2. You can bring your rod/s over on Friday afternoon or first thing Saturday morning. ...............
