Donald, yeah, super high macro images, almost like they were highlighting the flaws.

As a hobbiest never happy with my wraps, and macro lenses are the devil's tool. I've never liked anything I've photographed. But today I was on a rod manufacturer's site and saw wraps worse than the first wraps I taught my friend to do. Religiously. All over the site. They weren't even packed or burnished. I was shocked. But I also feel slightly better. They did have nice epoxy, though.

Oh, yeah after I wrote this post, I realized I had actually bought both, and now I have the exact same question. I wonder if anybody out there can clarify. I don't want to be using this wrong. But if they both do the same thing, I'm literally throwing the two part stuff out without trying it. There site doesn't exactly elucidate the issue.

I just got some Rod Dancer from Mudhole. OMG. This stuff is fantastic. It will change everything about how I build rods. No more epoxy (always a harrowing experience if you have had it go bad even once). Being a hobbiest and not a pro, it's super convenient, for instance, to coat the wraps as I go instead of waiting for the whole rod to be done (I had a bunch come undone on me last night as I wor

I do that too. Otherwise, blank color without CP. But I never move a guide to make that happen. Interestingly, I wrap them much closer to the edge than most photos I've seen. Seems if you don't protect the edge, what's the point?

For ferrule wraps I just match the blank with non CP thread and let them melt into the background.

I cannot remember where, somewhere I saw a rod advertised with re-inforced ferrules. Ah, found it. Anglers Roost. Go Johnny, go! Also Epic and some others.

If I actually need it, I'll do it and take the speed trade off. I'm just curious if this is even a requirement with modern rods. Last thread I found on this was 2007 and a lot had changed in blank manufacturing since then. Maybe all rods are re-enforced by design now and I just never got the memo.

Your argument makes sense. But if you look at at rod like a vibrating spring and each wrap is like a little dampener, then I still feel that less is better. I'd love to spend some quality time in a lab with a high-speed camera. I know from experience that same blank single vs. double footed have different actions. Plus, you know, I'm intrinsically lazy and I don't want to be doing this out of tra

Tom, I figured somebody from MH will chime in here. That's a great thing about this space.

Thanks. I just try to reduce the wraps as much as possible as they really dampen the rod action. Same reason I use single foot guides. I was considering laying the feathers directly on the blank.

Please forgive me if this topic is discussed, dead, and buried, I searched this site here and using Google and still did not get an answer. Do we still need to wrap female ferrules on fly rods these days? Seems like the manufacturers would've solved that by now. I'm asking in general, and specifically I'm building an MHX 5 weight at the moment, which is why I put Mudhole in the title. Also, M

So my friend orders from Mudhole, and in the special instructions part where they say "like if you want a picture of a dinosaur' she says "I would like a picture of a dinosaur." And got one. And a good one. I wish I could include it here. Thanks for putting a little good humor in a world that has too little of it.

It's been so long since I ordered feathers, I cannot remember where I got them, and my computer is being glitchy today, when I search for "feather" or variations of it here on the forum, I'm getting null responses, which I know cannot be right!

I'm using a drill press to turn handles. I found that when I glued up handles of different materials, that just holding sandpaper to shape them doesn't work because the different materials erode differently, leaving high and low spots. Bob Meiser suggest using a sanding block. That works better, and for the transitions I wrap the paper around a beer bottle to get some of the concave curves. Yet,

I have a plethora of fast 9' 9wt blanks from a reputable manufacturer who is unfortunately not listed here. I got them from a rep when he switched brands. I have some other weird lengths in this weight too (I think an 8'6" and 10'). I would love to trade the for some lightweight switch rods, some wooden handles, or even some 4-piece 5 wts. I'm open if you have a use for these blanks, propose

As a small time hobbiest who only builds a couple of rods a year, there is one thing that I wish all of the manufacturers offered which would really help me out. That is if I could buy assortments of tip tops and winding checks (for that matter it would be nice to get a bulk assortment of guides, too). But the tip-tops and winding checks especially because I first have to order the blank before I

If you search my name I think I have 2 threads on this last year, but the part you are looking for is in this answer: "Janns Netcraft has the aluminum ones in three different sizes."

I don't know what you mean by "tip-into-but" it's a typical male-female connection. The male side is um, under endowed girth wise, It looks like a custom built rod on a blank I'm not familiar with.

Just for the record, I'm sure this has been covered before, and I did search for it, but just didn't find it, so please forgive me if this is redundant. I'm sure many of you can relate: as a rod builder, all of a sudden I have become a rod repairer for all of my friends. I need to clear my bench of other people's rods so I can build my own! Okay, venting aside. One of the rods is a 2-piece fib
