Butt cap and grip for 10' surf rod. I like to have grip on the butt of surf rods for casting. Much more comfortable to me.

High temp glue over an alcohol burner, get it melted then run a dubbing needle though it creating a thick "string" on the bottom side of the needle. Give it a few seconds to cool then peel it off the needle, roll a little between my fingers and press it down into the tube. Then heat the tube until I see the glue melt and start to "bubble out" and slide the top on the blank.

A friend at work brought me a couple of old handles that belonged to his Grandfather. He wants me to build on them but I wanted to check and make sure that I am not about mess up some type of rare antique or something. Based upon limited research - what I could find - does not appear to be anything out of the ordinary but just wanted to check to see if anyone here has any additional information

Yes, the nail knot. Quick and pretty easy then can finish right off.

Got a guy that brought me a rod in need of repair - fell victim to a power window. Its not broken in two as you can see. But, it looks like failure is very likely under the next significant load. Of course, my first thought was to cut the end and add re-apply tip. But the rod has tremendous sentimental value for him - he's a doctor and was made for him by a former patient - and he reall

Love catching bluegill on a fly rod. Like others have said, 5wt is good, 4 wt is better (more fun) but good to have the 5 in case you get a decent bass on the other end. If you can, get your uncle to strip some line on another rod and measure how far up he reaches. If it were me, I would put a #12 double foot stripper a couple of inches out from that point then another double foot #8 then sing

I have a form on my site that i have been refining and using. Has drop down items and basic information to get started - which is the purpose. I get a general idea and then start the conversations for get more of the details. I can have a rod spec'd out in a fraction of the time for those who contact me using the form as compared to sending an email. Its very handy. Drop me an email at

Tape up for a shim, or, could use these: Find one with the right diameter and just slip over the end.

Walt, that's what I was going to suggest - just a little sanding. I had a similar problem and one where I pushed too hard and had a little bow in the grip. Took just a little sanding - not much at all - in that area to take it out. Glad it worked out for you.

Ahh, got it. Thanks, Tom! I admit, the last time we discussed this subject I skimmed over the first of the article in the library (referenced by Jim) and just started chasing the IRS notes and links. Totally missed the "constructive sales price" and how that works. Good information and understand the "$160" now. Makes sense. I am still going to get an accountant to hel

I believe, someone speak up if I have this wrong as still trying to sort this out, but I believe the FET is 10% of the cost of the rod and capped at $10 per rod. So, any rod over $100 would have a $10 tax. Believe the $160 cost cap for $10 FET is the old tax. Page 7, Section II, second section (IRS No. 110) Agree with Tom, I have it as a non-taxable line item on my invoices (since I rec

I thought I was having "problems" with FlexCoat so I tried another brand - Thread Master. In order to get my new brand right I started looking at what I was doing and changing up a few things. I observed the following: 1. Thoroughly warm parts A & B. I was using a hair dryer but I now put under a heat lamp for a few mins. Nothing fancy, a clamp on work light with a spotlight

Thanks, Jim, for the feedback. Also, thank you Tom for the comment - did not thank you earlier. I do collect sales and use tax - for North Carolina - and have been paying that. Just was not aware of the excise tax. From what I was to understand did not think I needed an FEIN number so thought was that all fed taxes were being covered as part of my EOY taxes. Oh, well. Fortunately I do kee

Tom, I can appreciate your comment and understand - no problems with that. But, the thought of having to go back for the last three years and pay the back taxes - and whatever penalty the bureaucrats want to throw at me - that will be coming out of my pocket since I did not collect is extremely aggravating right now. I/We pay enough taxes as it is. I know this is no one's fault but my own bu

Oh, this is great. More $$ to the gov't. I have been in business for three years now and had no idea about this tax!!! Been paying state tax but had no idea about this one. Should have known Uncle Sam needed a slice of the action. Assumed it was settled up in my filings at the end of the year when I did my taxes. Are there any other taxes or fees that are to be paid/gathered?

What Roger, said. I would also add that with reel seat I have use 1 about 1/3 of another arbor to cover the full length due to the length in the back under the cork. The foam arbors are the key, IMHO. What I have done is determine the length of the arbors needed then glue up the rear grip and arbors with 15 min Rodbond. Let that - the grip and arbors setup - then Rodbond up the reel seat.

Love these reel seats - not that expensive and gives the rod a nice modern touch. I build mine way ahead of time and keep several in "inventory" for future builds. I assemble the woven handle, threaded barrel (without the hood) and stationary hood on the graphite tube using rodbond. I put the graphite tube even with the end of the stationary hood as I usually end up cutting the fi

I start at the hole end. Easier for me as I can push the thread close to the end and get it squared/matching the cut. Eddie

I use my old Stanley miter saw - fine woodworking finish blade - then sand the cut end until I get it looking smooth and squared up if needed. Eddie

Got a customer who wants a fiberglass Lamiglas similar to the Skeet Reese SR705R rod. He just does not like the color of the rod but loves the performance and action. Best I can tell look like the blank for the SR705R is the BMB84-1E. I also found this information from a while back (2005): Interested in getting any feedback or comments on this blank. Curious if anyone has additional rec

I have a customer who is looking for a good worm rod; preferably in a St. Croix. Currently he throws a Zillion 6'6" MH and says that it feels too stiff for him. Thinking that the STC's will be softer, I have spec'd the 70MHF in both the SCIII and SCV lines. I have exchanged email with St. Croix (they are great) and have about convinced myself to go with the 3/5C70MF. But, was very curiou

Good to hear this is acceptable. I have done this on some thin wire fly guides when they came loose and thought I was cheating. Yes, this will be how micros are done from now on. Eddie

Agree with Billy and Tom, EVA shrinks and gets rock hard. I left a piece in boiling water too long and when I got it out was about 3/4 the original size and after it dried was hard as a rock. No way could see it melting into anything like the original state.
