Wow! Folks, appreciate all the great feedback. This is what makes this site so great. Definitely gave me alot to think about.
Personally, I am all over Pflueger, but, I know this gentleman is definitely into the high-end gear. He loves his Tibors, but, just do not want to go down that path.
I have the fear of getting something that he may view as not the "quality" he is use to

Thanks, Billy. Yes, think I am probably thinking about this too much but really want to get it right as I want to build some more of these.
oops - yes, Tom, key piece of information. The rod is a two-piece 50/50 American Tackle ATX 11' Graphite Surf Blank @ 15-30 lb line and 1-3 oz lure. The tip is a 7 with a butt dia of .637.
Thanks,
Eddie

93. Surf Rod guides
Building another surf rod.
This time I want to use Fuji NCG, but, have a question about the number of guides. With a surf rod - going for maximum distance - should I stick to a fixed number of guides? Thought I remember reading in a couple of places that surf rods should have no more than 6 guides.
But, is this really the case?
When I do the deflection test with the NCGs and say

Know that this doesn't pertain exactly to rod building, but kinda (I hope)….
I have been asked to build a 7 wt fly rod for saltwater - mainly for drum on back-bays/sounds here in North Carolina. I have now been asked to go get a good saltwater reel - an area that I am not that familiar with.
After researching saltwater fly reels, I have landed on what I think are two good options:

I love this site!
Drill a hole in the cap. What a simple brilliant solution. I have been sticking the syringes down in the bottle to load. I figured after the next use or two it will be too low for me to do this and would have to use smaller bottles, or pour into a cup to load the syringe. Nope the drill and the 5/32 bit will be taking care of this.
Like others, I keep my syringes loade

I used the reel seat arbors last night on a batson fly - my days of using sheet rock tape are over!!!
I reamed the arbor and fit to the blank and did not install in the reel seat first and then ream. One thing I learned though, was that the fit of the arbor needs to be very close to where it will be placed. I fit it within just a couple of inches where it would be glued up planning that the

Great thread.
I have been using drywall tape for reel seats. After the other night though think I have done my last. Ordered some graphite arbors that I got yesterday and will be installing this weekend - maybe tonight - on a fly rod. Hadn't thought about installing the arbors in the reel seat then reaming and installing. Going to give that try.

I was messing around with paper stickers one day - "Cars" movie stickers my little girl had - and they turned out pretty good. They were kind of vinyl feel - a little stretchy but paper based - I applied, then put on a coat of CP and finished with FlexCoat high-build. They turned out good and gave me good ideas for future "kid" builds.

Thanks, guys.
I am using 20 LB saltwater mono. The reel is a spinning Salt Striker 4000 - assume a 40 mm reel face but will measure.
I am really considering going ahead and ordering/using the fuji guides. I finished the top wrap last night for a tiger wrap. Practicing, and my second, that really looks nice so I want to do this rod up right.
Thanks again,
Eddie

Greetings,
My first post. Have been lurking for over a year now and have learned so much from this site. A tremendous resource.
I bought a kit to build a 9' surf rod thinking it would be easier to learn to build because it might have some basic directions for the setup. All I got (which is OK - no complaint) were the raw components - which is fine but has left me with some questions. I fi

Thanks, guys.
Jim, that is what I am running into; want to get consistent results. Even my "bad" results are not consistent. I have contacted Decal Connection, and they have been super helpful and nice - very fast turn around on responding to my questions. If I cannot get something that is repeatable and looks "professional" with what I have, going to get them to conve

104. Decal question(s)
First post by a "newb" here. Been lurking for almost a year. Great site and have learned *SO* much. Have built a bunch of rods but am REALLY struggling with decals. Know that some of sponsors have great service and products for decals, but, I really want to create my own for the flexibility.
I have been using the "decal method" by Dave Rogers, but just cannot get them t
