Another trick if your going to use a chop saw is to install the blade backwards. As mentioned, use the finest blade you can find, the more teeth the better. The saw slices through the cork without chewing. Used this system for cutting vinyl siding in construction for many years. Plus, the blade will last forever cutting cork. Don't try using it on wood though with the blade reversed. It jus

Scott, I like the look of the Lumiseal. I think the weight difference, especially on a fly rod would make an excellent selling point. I too only build fly rods, and the question always comes up about weight. I think, as mentioned before, it's selling the idea that the Lumiseal is equally as durable as epoxy, as most people only know epoxy as a finish. It's a matter of changing their mindset.

Do a search on it Garrett. There's quite a bit of information on the subject of painting blanks on here. Good luck with that. I bought an airbrush on the weekend just for that. Haven't tried it out yet though. cheers Harold

I build them for personal gratification. I like to think I build a rod that is tweaked to my customers personally, plus I can add a little bling to it that you can't get with an off the shelf rod. I build only fly rods, and the grip is the one area that you can really personalize to your customers wants and needs. Thicker, narrower, longer, shorter, what-ever works to fit their grip and style

I would like to do a grip or two in rattan, but I'm not sure what I should be using. On the web sites they have flat, oval/flat and round/flat and in a number of different widths. I would think, that the narrower the width, the easier it would be to wrap, or is the narrower more brittle. I've read to soak the rattan in hot water before using, so that should take the brittleness out. On one si

I build only fly rods and have built on a number of Batson blanks. (2pc, 4pc, 8'6" and 9') I cannot comment on the RX7+ or the RX8+ yet as I haven't built on them yet. I've built on the Forcast and Rainshadow and in my opinion, they are good bang for your buck. I'd recommend them to anyone. cheers Harold

Bill, I agree. I've never done it that way, just stating that it was shown on one of XXX videos, and if the wear is infront of the foot like Mark says and not under the foot, hmmmm. Harold

This is a long shot but is it on both ends of the snake guides or just one. If it's just on one, I have seen it done where they may have used a fine file or the likes to mark where the foot starts. Actually XXX XXX shows this on his rod building DVD. Your not suppose to cut through to the fibers though, just the top finish. Just a thought Harold

Tim. I put my rods into a dryer after applying CP so as it dries it will spread itself evenly if I happen to apply too much. Naturally the best thing is not to apply too much. cheers Harold

Tom is right. Without knowing what your targetting and where, it's difficult to give advise on the rod needed. There are a number of different rod lengths and weights for a good reason. If you can be more specific with your targetted species, and where you will be doing most of your fishing ie lakes, rivers, streams, ocean we will be in a better position to give you positive advice. cheer

Hi Matthew. Welcome aboard. Maybe things have changed in the past couple years, but I ordered a lot of my supplies from south of the border when I started and they were all shipped to Canada including epoxy. I'll have to check. I second it that Andy Snedden at Rodbuilder Supplies is great to deal with. cheers Harold

I am assuming your talking about a metal winding check. I think that if the fit is very very tight as you describe, and there may be a chance of you damaging the finish and or blank, that it should not be used. Even wrapping guides too tight can cmpromise the structure of a blank, and thus if you have to force the WC into place, then it;s too tight. Just my 2 cents though. cheers Harold

Hi DR. For what it's worth, I purchased the 16 oz size of FC lite about a year and a half ago, and I'm still working with it. I have had none of the problems you are witnessing. My rod building room temp is a constant 70 deg. Harold

When I get them, I cut them off after the first coat of epoxy. Then you don't have to worry about cutting into your threads. They trim flush to your epoxy and a second coats make them disappear. Harold

Yes the former. Around the guide once and then the blank. Then the guide again then the blank and do this one last time. (three times in total) I put my tie off thread in before I start the forhan wraps and then make one last blank wrap after the final forhan wrap and then tie it off. cheers Harold

Silvia. I think it's great that you stepped up here to support your product. It's on my list of items to try out. I haven't had to order anything lately but will be getting some on my next order. I think it's important that people like you and Gary Loomis and other manufacturers have/show a legitimate interest in the rodbuilding industry. For us little guys that only build 15 or 20 rods a

Wow, that's durability Tom. I'm assuming (I know, bad word) that you have to scrape the blank down? When you use the enamel paint do you still put a clear coat overtop? Would that also be enamel or something maybe like permagloss? I thought about purchasing an airbrush in the past, this might be a good time to take the plunge and experiment. Again, I just don't know where to start as paintin

I've given that some thought Tom. I'm just not sure I'm up to the challenge. I don't know what type of paint to use, should I scrape the blank down, etc. etc. Perhaps some more feedback here from those that have done this, and I will certainly consider taking this on. Jim, I'll check my email as soon as I get home from work. Thank-you. Harold

Larry. I too only build fly rods, and like Phil said, if a customer doesn't specify a blank, I always recommend Batson. I have had zero issues with their blanks. cheers Harold
