I have never used the label maker you are talking about but did try clear mailing labels and never liked the result. I too have taught rodbuilding to students at school. It is a lot of fun. We make our own labels but use inkjet water slide paper. Students now days have computer skills we cavemen can learn from. I always have them make 2 in case one tears or does not come out right on the rod. M

I have a customer who wants a 5 or 7 piece pack fly rod built. I usually talk people into a short 5 wt. 4 piece rod but he wants a 5 or 7 piece 8'6"-9' rod. I am having trouble sourcing that blank. I have seen some on the @#$%& site but would rather go with something that has a blank warranty. Any suggestions?

No the only thing I get from Mike anymore are either the core molds or .25 bore cores since he doesn't sell that mold. Did you receive your supplies from Mike yet?

I am wondering if anybody has ordered and received anything lately from Mike. I have tried e-mailing and calling but have not received any response. I have been using Mike for many years and know that at times he gets bogged down with everything on his plate(guide service, fishing rods, carbon fiber stuff and fishing tournaments). Just reading the board it sounded like he may no longer be doing t

The flexlites are very good guides. They dont bend and snap back like the recoils. I like to use them on Ultra lite spinning rods to keep weight down.

Threaded rod (all thread) is a soft steel which in it self makes it flex easily under pressure. When you cut threads into it reduces the effective diameter. A 1/4" threaded rod is about the same as 3/16" smooth rod. Smooth rod from a hardware store is better but not necessarily straight the best is drill rod. It is hard and straight and less likely to flex under pressure. I use all thre

I use my lathe and micro parting tool. This is with foam core carbon grips. That gives me a nice square clean cut. I have the glued on many different materials to finish it off. The real trick comes trying to make fighting butts or rear grips without a through hole ( no plugs or butt caps ).

I use wire ties in different sizes. Bigger ones to hold the fabric back and then the littlest ones I can find to tie it down next to the core. PacBay has preshaped cores out of a denser style of foam that can be used. I am not aware if Mudhole has just cores or not.

I build a lot of these grips for myself and other builders, and yes you can outsource much of what you need. If you are just wanting to see if you like this, then Riley's kit is the best way to go even if you have to wait a little bit. I now of course buy my materials from other sources and the only thing I get from Mike is the molds for the cores. I save money in the long term but I also have to p

102. Berkley Shadow rod
A customer dropped of a older Berkley SGlass Shadow salmon rod 2 PC. He thought it had lost the male ferrule. I wasn't home so he left it with my wife. Upon inspection it looks like they used a combination spigot and butt over tip ferrule. Is this correct? I had not seen this before.

I also do a lot of CF work and as Phil says, the fighting butts are more challenging than the full grips. When I do them I make 4 to an 18" mandrel and I do 2 set ups so I have them in stock. They are challenging because of the length it is sometimes hard to get tight pull on the sleeve. Another thing to remember is you are going to have a thru hole so that will need to be capped in some way.

Checked at Schneiders earlier and couldn't find them but looks like Rod components does! Tried to talk ino spiral and Steve Gardner's set up but wouldn't have it. I like the airwaves for conventional set ups though. I have used them a couple of times and they static test well on their layout and the customers seem to like them.

108. Re: Furled leaders
I have made and used furled leaders fo years. They have a lot af pro's and few cons. If you make them yourself the cost is pennies, wether you use fly tying thread or light mono. I use mono quilting thread anymore. I have used thread and for small dry fly presentations they are the best, but they don't work for most other presentations. They last a long time. I have some that have three seasons on

About this time every year it seems this comes up. Mike gets very busy at this time of year. I also think he was trying to start mass producing grips for certain companies as OEM handles. I have been dealing with Riley Rods for a lot of years off and on. I got my first kit to build CF handles there. Most of the time service has been good, but occasionally not as good. I make CF grips for differ

I like to use the elongated full wells in the front and a shorty full in the back. 1/4" won't make any difference. Some of my customers like just a straight grip both front and rear.

PacBay Quiickline. Batson Revelation. Bingham Enterprises private line Shx. The Shx is the least expensive but very good. Comparable to all mentioned even the Mhx. I have built on all of them. The Quickline is my personal favorite.

Penn States Turncrafter Commander Pro. With extension table--$395. I have taught Industrial arts for 35 years and have used a few brands, you can't beat them. Three at school and one at home. You do know that once you get the lathe there are all the other accessories you will want or need to get.

Yeah I wasn't going to use an inner sleeve as the internal diameter is very small. Thanks for the input.
