I think Bob is right.
First, It is his business and he should be able to run it as he sees fit.
Second, Alex is in the sporting business. If he can expand it into fishing I applaude him for it. There are no smaller rod builders than my self, I only do about one or two a month. I do not have any plans of goin into business. If Alex is willing to take that gamble and do the extra work w

Tom,
Thank-you. It is not that I know or have the talent to be a certified rod builder, it was mostly out of cuiriosity. I thought it may be a good way to meet other builders. In your directory I found one about 45 minutes away, I may try contacting him. I counted 14 others in Ohio and that was it. The bamboo boys had no one listed from Ohio Either.

I didn`t really mean certification from a government. Like there are certified patio paver installers, and certified landscape designers. I wondered if a rod building club or organization had certain critea a person would have to meet to be certified by some standard.
Also I am looking for rod builders in N.E.Ohio who may be interested in a get together and forming a group who can meet toget

Tom,
I think if you were busy making sales calls It would not only effect the quality of this site but the magazine also. You are what makes both! If needed you should hire a sales rep. We depend on you!!!!!!

Thanks guys, you all give me some ideas of what it could be. I can do a little research now that I have a way to start. It has some surface rust to it but otherwards very nice shape.
Again, thanks for your help,

John,
The first guide looks to be welded to the steel blank, the other guide is a double foot with wire thread holding it on. the tip top looks to be pressed on. and yes, it too ways a ton. Back in those days it took a man to do the fishing!! I think the era was officially known as: "BRMM".
(Before Rod Maker Magazine).

As a gift I was given an extremely old casting rod. the total length is 50 inches. the rod is made of steel with 2 guides and a tip top. The handle and reel seat appear to be aluminium with a plastic hand grip and a rubber butt cap. There is no markings on the rod or reel. Does any one know how to I.D. this or a date? I am thinking possible 1930`s or 40`s.
Thanks for your help

I have only had one handle like that. I was also a bit perplexed to say the least. I cut it down to the approximate size, glued it and put it in my cork clamp with a light sanding afterwards. So far so good, it has not come back.

I just tried my first flag wrapping. it came out looking very cool. I was so involved I did not realize that i do not knbow how to count! I have 15 stripes in Old Glory in stead of 13 for the original colonies
I think it may be easier to ad 2 more colonies than to rewrap >LOL. Good thing it was just a practice wrap!!!

Tom,
Thanks for the warning, we all should know to deal with Rod Maker Mag only for back issues. I can not begin to imagine how you have time for all you do for us. And I for one thank you for the magazine, and all of the info shared with us on this site. My wife thinks I have an internet girl friend, but is only you!!! LOL

I use rod racks which I have made that will hold ten rods. I cut the nothces out a little closer together and deeper than if it were to hold finished rods. This way I can safely keep and always find up to thirty blanks. They can be sorted by type, size, and or color. And it only takes up thirty inches of wall space. Or, you could use a piece of 3 inch PVC pipe and just stand it in the corn

An aquaintance asked if I could build a spinning rod he could use for walleye while casting from a boat in Lake Erie. He would like a good stiff rod where he could easily set the hook. I am looking for suggestions for the blank size and style and also the guides to be used. Any help is greatly needed.
Awhile back I thought I saw a form to use when selling a rod, it had several questions to

927. Re: I give up
I too am amazed by all of this. The rods I build are OK and they fish really well using the right componets. How-ever I feel I never will be good enough to sell one for a good price. The joy I get is just trying to do better with each one and watching the face of the people I give them to, as the rods are nice. My problem is I am going to have to meet new people soon, so I can keep practicing.

Next question, this rod will have holographic guides and reel seat. I would like to do an easy diamond butt wrap. any suggestions on color and directions?
I love this site and the info everyone sh

930. Re: Color Preserve
Hello Terry,
Yes, I used bright yellow nylon thread on a brown rod. My concern with the loose threads is, I read if they are wrapped too tight it makes it difficult to tweak the guides. It sounds like I need to go lighter on the preserver and tighter on the wraps. Thank-you for your input.
