I had a discussion with a guy from work, and once again I had to show my intelligence. I was almost embarassed by giving my ussual answer. i am so predictable. The question was: "Why do casting rods normally have double foot guides and spinning rods have single foot guides?" My reply was: "idunno". What is the reason and does it really make a difference? Thanks,

I had a rod that would not dry and it remained tacky for two weeks. How disgusted I was!! It was an improper mixture using measureing spoons. I now use only syringes and do a 3 cc mix. I then use an epoxy mixing machine, ( Sponsors on the left) i have had no problems since. Knock on wood. lol I also put the epoxie and hardner bottles in a cup of hot water for a couple of minutes. Mike, We have all had our problems with the first few rods. My story was very similar to yours so i know what you are going through. I would just put this rod in the corner somewhere out of the way. Start with a basic rod with out thread art, or very little of it, and work your way up through a couple of rods. This should give you the feeling of accomplishment instead of defeat. do a few ro

Cody, I have been building for just over a year and also on a tight budget. I too would like to be able to buy cheaper. I can not find any one with in an hours driving time to help me and answer questions. Everything I have learned came from either this sight, Rodmaker magazine, or a couple of books I have. Books and magazines are great, this site is even better. I can ask any question and g

Mike, I`m sorry, I assumed you were a wolverine. I hope you will still send me e-mails Bill Everybody, Thanks for your ideas and suggestions. This could be an extra fun rod to build. I`m not sure how to do the school pin in the butt end. Are we talking in the butt cap or on the rear grip? Would you use my regular epoxy? Sorry to all of the Mich. fans, I really don`t dislike them

Being from Ohio, this sort of pains me to even think about. I am going to build a rod for a Mich. friend of mine who unfortunetly is a great U. of M. fan. Well, I am going to use a blue blank and yellow metallic thread. Do you think the thread will be dark enough to show through? I feel like it should be OK. I just hate to have a Buckeye loose to a Wolverine in any sort of manor. GO BUCK

Brandon, I would go with all of the above. I think Mike has it in the right order. The Flex Coat DVD and Tom Kirkmans` book are both a must have. The only advise I can add is to start with a rod building kit. It has everything you need so you will not have quite as many decisions as to the components needed. Good luck!!! It is a fantastic hobby and is very gratifying as your skills grow

Cork seal can be had from most of the sponsors to the left. I know Mudhole handles it. I have used it on most of my rods, then I was told about Tru Oil.. IMO that gives a richer look than Cork Seal. As Eric said it is used on gun stocks, so most any store that sells guns should have some in stock. Bill

You can call me an odd ball too. I prefer sidearm casting. It`s not just for control although that is the major reason, my overhead always make too big of a splash whhich could be from too early of a release. Bill

i have painted only one rod. I went to an auto paint supplier in my area. I told them what I was doing and they advised me to buy bumper paint. The reason being it will flex upon impact and does not chip as easy. They said I should have a can of Bull Dog. I never heard of it, and was told it was an adhesion promoter especially for plastics and rubbery type surfaces. They had a beach ball paint

Hi Shawn, I had to remove one too. What I did is take a pot of boiling water and lay the reel seat across the pot for a few minutes. be sure to turn the rod every little bit for better heat distribution. The heat will soften the epoxie and it will slide off with some help. This may take two people, one to hold the rod and the other to twist and pull the seat. Burns can happen so use an

Thanks everyone, I went to Home Depot yesterday, the man at the paint counter had never heard of Tru oil. He talked me into Teak Oil. I applied a coat last evening and it is still sticky almost 24 hrs later. I wonder if it might not absorb as well. I wiped it on, gave it several minutes to sit and wiped off any excess. I will wait and see what happens. BTW. The handles came out lookin

I just built a little U.L. Spinning rod for a friend. I thought I would try some thing new and coated the cork ring handle and fore grip with my extra epoxie. It is turning in the dryer this moment. I am wondering will this cause the grips to be too slippery? My guess is YES. Do you think I should give him one of those spring loaded grip excersise things. He will need to hang on much tight

John, I like Tom`s idea and iIwill try it the next time. However what I have tried in the past also seems to work good. I went to an automotive paint supply house and picked out my choice of color in the bumper paint,, It has a little flex to it). Then I bought a can of ~~Bull Dog~~, this is an activator and helps the paint adhere to the blank. While the Bull Dog is still a little tacky I

As a hobby builder, what happens if I have people who would like to purchase some rods from me. Since I do not have State or Fed. I.D. numbers am I legally allowed to sell any rods? How much of a pain is it to apply for the tax papers and fill out the quarterly reports if I only sell a dozen rods a year? I would hope the following years I could sell more, but who knows maybe the eyes will go
